Interesting thing about that K-40 that you probably already know. It sometimes emits a positron, or anti-electron. When this positron encounters a regular electron, it annihilates, and produces two 511 keV gamma rays with direction completly opposite each other. This is visible with a 3 inch NaI detector. The two 511 keV gamma rays are each equivalent to the rest energy of the electron or positron. Hence, the leptons that annihilated vanish.

@@sciguy3128 Yes, that is a neat thing about K-40. It also happens with F-18 in a PET scan and that’s how they work, interestingly. I need to get out my massive Ludlum 44-10 and hook it up to a meter. I need to get a Ludlum 12 for that though. That would be fun to detect the gamma from that.

That’s the plan, but even that won’t get me enough to get a B20. They’re like $2000 from eBay. I’m hoping I can get one at Christmas time or my birthday. That would be my present that I’ll “three-quarters-buy” myself if you get what I mean. I’m not sure when I’ll be able to get one. I am more or less astounded at not only your exceptional precocity for learning about radioactivity and physics generally, but also at the highly accurate and almost entirely factually correct nature of your commentary. Ordinarily for someone interested in radiation at your age, I would give a little lecture about minimizing exposure and understanding the difference between contamination and radiation itself, but I honestly see almost no need here, as I observe that you are already following careful procedures to minimize both. I believe that you may potentially have something very special with your autunite sample here - as it is labeled as being from Portugal, I think it may be from the Infesta mine, possibly giving it a very unique property. If you can see this post and respond to it, I will reply with more details. One small final note - in your "water and air are amazing" investigation, you are observing a very specific phenomenon called "frustrated total internal reflection". When the evanescent wave of incident internally reflected light (which extends a few nanometers above the surface of the glass) is intercepted by the surface of eg. a finger tip, it is decoupled from the glass, scattered in the skin, and becomes easily visible.

The radiacode102 can detect uranium glass and uranium glaze you just have to give it time also for more accurate readings put the source as close as you can to the sensor
@abyphysics4144 ай бұрын
@@chemicode Technically it will pick it up, yes, it can just be stubborn with it. Uranium is primarily an α and β emitter and the Radiacode only detects γ (which Uranium barely emits) If you give it time and really watch the readings you could see an increase.

@abyphysics4144 ай бұрын
@@chemicode Oh and also just a side note: You may hear that the Radiacode detects beta but I don’t think it does. It might be a rumor or something. Technically, a CsI(Tl) scintillation crystal should only be able to sense gamma radiation. You would need a beta scintillator, which has a certain type of plastic as the crystal element. Beta could get through the inclosure of the Radiacode, and I think that this might be where the misunderstanding comes from.
