From a Duke '94 grad believe this! Steve Blake and Juan Dixon were some DAWGS! Those are 2 of the best competitors in the history of college basketball. They could have played for me anytime. I was actually happy in 2002 that if we weren't going to win it, they did. They earned everything they got!

What a great video. It brings back so many memories and it validates one thing: Those few years, UMD and Duke was the legitimate rivalry in college basketball. I've lived in the DC area all my life and I just assumed those games against Duke were huge because I was a UMD fan. Even if that was the case, those games were the highlight of the season. At that time I was just finishing high school. Such a fun time and such a wonderful video. Moving to the B1G truly was a disappointment but time may prove it all good. Melo has the ability to lead Maryland to another championship. Thanks, and Go Terps.

The sports writers at one time declared MARYLAND-DUKE was the No.1 rivalry in sports. The Dookies always said, "Not our rival!", deep inside they knew better, back a few years ago when only 1 team from each conference would go to the tourney. NC state won with David Thompson, Tom Burleson, & Monte Towe... for that Kodak moment their thoughts of winning, they said, "it was nothing compared to beating Maryland!" I feel sorry for the ACC that Maryland has left the building.

I'm a Michigan fan and love the Big Ten and think Maryland has great potential as a Big Ten member, but it is sad when rivalries like this are essentially ended because of realignment. Let's pretend the shoe's on the other foot and Michigan joined the ACC. I'd be so sad to see our major rivalries with Ohio State and Michigan State ended; or in the "best" case scenario only played a couple times every 10-20 years. It would even be miserable to lose rivalries Michigan has with schools like Minnesota (and with it the oldest college football trophy, Little Brown Jug) or series with schools like Iowa or Purdue where there have been fantastic games and upsets, even if many if those upsets came at the expense of Michigan. So, I feel for Terrapin fans and the heartache the Big Ten move has caused. Hopefully now Maryland can start a great rivalry with neighboring Penn State (they seem like natural rivals) or create some other rivalries the way they did with Duke, by having memorable games with high stakes.

I remember watching this game with some friends at home. I did not go to work the next day. That game...ugh. Damnit. By the way, those rosters were loaded with NBA talent. Maryland: Juan Dixon, Steve Blake, Chris Wilcox, Lonny Baxter. Duke: Jay Williams, Carlos Boozer, Chris Duhon, Mike Dunleavy Jr, Dahntay Jones, Shane Battier. This season and next, two teams dominated college basketball: Duke and Maryland. Both were in the Final Four in 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. Duke won the title in 2001. Maryland won the title in 2002. The coaching staffs were stacked also; Duke had Jonny Dawkins, Chris Collins, and Steve Wojciechowski. Dawkins left for Stanford then coached UCF. Chris Collins coaches Northwester. Wojo is at Marquette. Maryland had Billy Hahn, Dave Dickerson, and Jimmy Patsos. Hahn left for LaSalle. Dickerson left MD for Tulane. Patsos left MD for Loyola (MD), then Siena.

As it turns out, The University of Maryland was ahead of the curve by leaving it's traditional conference, mostly for financial reasons. Today's ACC in no way resembles the 2002 version. All of today's power conferences have come about at the expense of great rivalries. The Big Eight, Southwestern Conference, and others are only a fading memory to sports fans. The only thing power conferences are good for is the RPI, which gives them a leg up in gaining access to March Madness. For me, the excitement of playing Duke and Carolina twice a year can never be replaced by playing the best teams in the B1G.

Yeah there is little doubt in my mind that Maryland basketball wanted nothing to do with leaving the ACC. Just like Pitt moving TO the ACC, it just completely sucked the life out of that program. Fans got up for playing Dunk and UNC; you can't just move the school away and expect the fans to just have the same passion with opponents you have no history with.

Yeah Maryland left the acc but face it it's for the best and they didn't just do it all for the money even though it played a big role. they did it to get recruits play better teams and to get out of a now dysfunctional conference. I don't care who you are the ACC is dysfunctional like it's called the Atlantic coast conference and yet teams like Louisville and Syracuse and even note dame joined who aren't even coastal states or school and I don't think Maryland wanted to be in a conference with a team like Notre dame who wasn't all in they joined all sports ACC except football so they don't share football money. it shouldn't be like that your either all in or all out

+scythecam Just because the Terps got blackballed after we announced we're leaving for the B1G. If it weren't for the GOR-Grant of Rights all the other ACC schools signed binding them to the Conference until 2025. Otherwise the league would be big trouble. If the ACC starts their 24 hour network, they'll be without the DC Market without Maryland. They're still sticking it to us by having their tournament in DC this year, but the Big Ten will have it here next year.
