Regarding the hosting the Tony's joke, the more this show went on, the more Jon Cryer was allowed the freedom to incorporate his own personality into the character of Alan. Alan was always portrayed as a lover of Broadway musicals, but this got more and more pronounced as the series went on. This is because Jon Cryer has always been a theatre geek (emphasis on "geek") from his youth.
