Well it wasn't. Ashton Kucher took the show in a new direction which didn't always work (the gay shit) but that was more the fault of the script writers and not strictly him. I thought he was passable/not too bad but yes, without Charlie it definitely wasn't the same anymore.

Rose did not really kill Charlie. She held him captive in a underground room. He escaped and the finale of the show showed his piano being dropped on him and killing him. Watch the finale and you will see his death.

Personally, Sheen was having substance problems, Kushner was bombing on the show, so the script had to end. Rose didn’t kill Charlie, she put him in a dungeon. Years later he escaped and hunted down the other characters. Bad ending!
