Fantastic video again guys. My mind is on finances more than anything else the last year. Good to hear you’re doing better now. I can kinda understand it as being a coping mechanism. The messed up part to me is when people who have lived in poverty for a long while continue to buy lottery tickets. If they simply put that money in a savings account, they might have a sizable emergency fund, which may help them when they have a financial emergency.

Some people call Hope the worst spirit in Pandora's box. After all, it's only because of hope that people elect to endure all the other ills. Buying lottery tickets that grant the illusion of hope(but no actual return on investment) illustrates that they might have had a point.

Similar to the Ireland bond, here in America some states have whats called a "Prize-linked savings account". The way it works is that instead of giving out a small amount of interest to all of the savings accounts, they pool the total interest together and randomly give it to a select few every quarter or so. Depending on how much money you have it will increase the amount of entries (i.e. every $100 is one entry). Apparently, in the areas where this has been implemented, it has encouraged savings (especially amongst the poor). They aren't going to get excited about $1 of interest but the prospects of winning a lottery in which all they have to do is have money in a bank account makes them keep the money in there and not buy lotto tickets.

The UK has Premium Bonds, which work like that. When our big lottery started (in the 1990s), some of our firm put together a syndicate to play, putting £10 a week in. I opted out, that was a lot of money to me, to throw away on the off chance. Instead, I put as much as I could into the Bonds, till I matched theirs. If they won more than £10 each, they distributed it; less, and it bought extra entries the next time. I had my winnings automatically "reinvented" in the bonds. By the time I moved on, I had about £20,000 in the Bonds, and they had had enough wins to take themselves out for a celebration, six times. I eventually paid off my mortgage with the money, then paid my mortgage money back in to new Bonds. I am so pleased that I managed to resist the pressure to join the syndicate!

@barvdw
@barvdw 5 жыл бұрын
It is harsh, and a little unfair, as it's more about desperation as said qemdrive. If you notice you're getting nowhere in life, it's very tempting to hope for an act of God to solve your (financial) problems. Even if you know it generally doesn't work out. The real culprits here are the governments preying on the poor, not those poor who are lured by fairy tales of wealth and happiness.
@dota-ed4638
@dota-ed4638 4 жыл бұрын
It is not harsh or unfair at all. Financial situations of people represent something deeper, something truly scary. Even if you were to collect all the wealth and balance it between everyone in 10-20 years you would not get much different society, this is what human is. This is the fairest society humankind has ever achieved.

I almost wished that I hadn’t won because it took all of the mental strength I had to put the money into savings and not buy a whole bunch of scratch offs. Thank goodness savings won out. I have to watch myself with things like these because addictive personalities run on both sides of my family. I'll admit, I play on the lottery. It's gambling, and the most pure form of it. And it's the gambling part that gives me pleasure, the chills and adrenaline rush when checking your ticket in the machine (or by checking the numbers...). I won some 5 euro this week. I was happy. And I didn't spend it on new lottery tickets. I know they're excuses, but to my defence, I don't play at the end of the month or when I don't have money left to spend, even when I only play for the smallest amount possible, and a big payout generally scares me off in stead of luring me in. All in all, it stays a game I play that gives me some pleasure (also because of another hobby of mine...), without costing too much compared to my general income, because I noticed the adrenaline rush wasn't any bigger when playing for €10 or €20 than when I play for €2. And as said, the odds are as just as ridiculously low, so why play for more?

Ugh, sucks that the lottery has such a negative history. At the same time it’s thanks to the lottery that college was paid for for me (how I still ended up with massive amounts of school loans is another story in itself). Really wish people could see the collective good in pooling monies together. Maybe if that were the case people would choose to be taxed for things that benefit society and a whole instead of being tricked into participating me an optional one.

"Dreaming about winning reveal a lot about yourself" - I loved this part. In some cases you don't need to win the lottery to realize your dreams. Sometimes you need to take the risk (take a loan to create your business) or put yourself out there (quit your job to get your dream job). The second great learning from this video is the fact that expectations rise with your wealth. More money will just increase your appetite, they will not give you happiness if you couldn't appreciate your life to start with.

Here's my view on the lottery. If you're playing it because you're in financial turmoil and seek a bail out, you're doing it wrong. Don't play, you have a financial literacy problem. If you take your monthly discretionary spending and decide to gamble it on a scratch off, I think that's fine. I mean say you only have $5 of your monthly "for fun" money left for the month. You could treat yourself with a coffee from starbucks. Or you can buy a $5 stratch off, winn $100, you have a nice date night. or a few frugal nice nights out with your SO. Win $500, and you can suddenly do a lot with your fun money. Retiring early sound fun? Probably shouldnt have spend that extra fun money and saved it, it's better on average, but $500 today feels nice for those brain chemicals. Buy a new computer, or half an RTX 2080. Literally ask for a week off work to relax if you're feeling stressed(if you make under 30k/year). There's so much fun you can do with that. If you're ok with losing that starbucks coffee, why not? It's your for fun money. You could obviously be doing it too much. Like if you can afford $100 for fun money to throw at scratch offs a month, you should probably be looking at rebalancing your budget. Honestly the only wrong way to play the lottery is to buy any of the jackpot games that pool the money and roll forward the jackpot from the previous draw. There's are ridiculously unlikely to win, and in the event you do win, you're almost certainly going to regret it. You're taking a double gamble of winning a 1/300million then another gamble of 20% being that you regret winning anyway. To see how unlikely you are to win, imagine a world where inflation doesn't exist and the cost of a MegaMillions ticket never changes. If you spend $10,000 a year on lottory every year for your whole life, on average it'd take about 750 lifetimes to win the jackpot. And you'd still lose money. It's worth noting that the average american spends about $200 a year on lottery. At that average, on average it would take you 37,500 lifetimes to win the jackpot. Although the numbers I see on average spending don't specify how they come to that number. I fear they might just be taking the average spending on lottery national wide and dividing that by the 18+ population of the US. So it's possible that number is up to $400 a year, which is like 18,000 lifetimes to win.

I'm not in poverty now, but when I was, I could not afford to even buy a ticket. I spend $40-$50 a month, I don't win, I will never win if I don't buy a ticket. It's the only form of gambling I do, however, I am currently researching the stock market, so that maybe my alternative.

You pointed out, that lottery is highly used by poor people and is especially triggered to them by the lottery provider. Do you really think, your do-gooder advice really helps them? Don’t get me wrong - the advice is good. But for the „victims“ of lottery it will just not work. They have almost no chance to break their chains of poverty on their own. That‘s WHY they play that little little chance. No matter how little it is.

You can increase your chances by buying more lottery tickets. Your chances would be greater than 99% if you buy 33 million tickets :)

I don't play lottery because I know I'll just end up even more depressed and worse off. The closest I do is the mcdonalds monopoly. But, that at least feeds you and satisfies the takeout desires. So it does overall help satisfy needs for fast food without much if any additional spending if it was gonna be spent anyway on fast food elsewhere. Though you can take this too far. Getting obsessed with it and binge eating as a result. But for me at least I just do it for the food, the monopoly prizes are only a bonus. Not the core reason I eat mcdonalds.

The lottery affects the poor, because the poor are being pragmatic. They know they will likely be poor the rest of their life, and losing one dollar a week isn't going to change their life anyways. So they go for it, they have nothing to lose.

whether you spend on small ticket or big ticket it is always the same, you will only get less than 100% of your investment if you win. People did an experiment, a KZbinr named Mr. Beast spend 50000 USD on lottery tickets and scratched them on camera one by one; the total amount of Win is always less than the total amount spent regardless of ticket price.

@@xponen Exactly why I spend less than $5 per year on it. I can afford $5 per year. And my expectation is that I will get $0 back on my investment, so my results have always met that expectation.

I actually love your mentality on the lottery, I have a plan for winning, but have never played outside throwing in on work pools, what are your thoughts on that? And I never thought of considering those dreams obtainable outside of lottery... but I am having trouble with compulsive behavior when payday hits that does not help me in the long run like going to fast food instead of the grocery store when I prefer to cook, but too lazy

A few years ago my son came along with me while grocery shopping. He said we should buy a lottery ticket and become RICH! I told him the odds of winning were astronomically small. He did not believe me. So, to amuse him, I purchased $10 in numbers. The following morning, he leaped out of bed to check the numbers. We had won $0. Nothing. Nada. Since then, he's with me on not buying tickets.
