I find it's usually the player that causes the guitar to go out of tune. I have a handful of extremely cheap guitars that stay in tune for me all night long and I'm a pretty aggressive player. Hand it off to a buddy and they're standing there tuning all night.

Sounds absolutely beautiful! As a 12 string guitarist, I'm always excited to see a video on 12 strings. I wish I had the skill and proper tools to that to my Dangelico Acoustic 12 String. Another person who uses the pads of their fingers when playing stringed instuments is a girl by the name of Libby Luxury. She's part of a southern gothic band from Oregon called The Bridge City Sinners. Also, love the innovation using that B string as an intonator. Looks like a really good option if you can't afford one of those $100 stewmac bridge intonators. Anyways, love the work you did, take care!

I own its twin. 1974 I think. Mine has a built in pickup and vol and tone controls. Same hummingbird design. Mine is very well loved and has served me well since I bought it in 1976. It has travelled everywhere with me including overseas and around Australia. Thanks. I was fascinated to see another one like mine.

Nice!! My friend was blown away when I did the nut and saddle job on his old Normand 12 string... His first comment was "Wow! This frets like an electric!!" And with each of the strings intonated individually it was perfectly in tune up and down the neck... Love a good 12 string!!

I really appreciate the fact that you play the instruments at the end of the video (if possible). Often, I spend a good amount of time wondering... how good could this instrument sound, potentially, that might warrent the amount of money it would take Ted to go through these pains. Hi Ted, I happen to have a black 6-string Ibanez Concord (Hummingbird copy). I bought it second-hand in 1974 or 1975. It must have been at least two years old at that time. After all these years of playing and staying idle for long periods, it developed the usual hump around the bridge area. The string height was enormous. I solved the problem by installing a JLD Bridge Doctor. Within a few days, the hump disappeared, it got a better brake angle, better string height and now this old guitar plays like butter. I installed a JLD Bridge Doctor on two 12-string guitars with similar results. Thank you for the nice video. Greetings from Athens, Greece!

My first good bass was an Ibanez P-Bass copy purchased new in the mid 70s and that is the way the lettering looked regardless of model. Ibanez only made copies and had a bunch...man, Canadians are lucky to have you. Great job as usual....vid still could be longer.

This guitar was manufactured in the early 70's. Maybe 72 or 73. I have one of that model, 6-string, bought in 1973 but I know very well, the 12-string version that you are repairing and I remember that they had a fabulous sound. As always, another major repair. Keep it up! Thanks

Great work. I bought a brand new Ibanez 12 string acoustic in 1983. I used to keep it tuned down to either D or D# as I found that the octave G string was very prone to snapping. It also had a tendency to "belly"; ie, the pull of all those strings caused the top to rise a fraction at the bridge.

Fabulous guitars which sold at a budget price. I bought a lefty back in 1976 with the Fender 12 style hockey stick headstock and it still had a 2mm action when I sold it on nearly 40 years later. Thanks for a great video. I'm definitely going to change the courses over on my current 12. Always struggled with getting both courses when fingerpicking. This is so logical - even if you miss the octave, you are probably going to get loads of sound from it off the vibration of the fundamental.

One of the best "setup repair" videos I've seen. Wish you were close so I could get my 1994 Martin HD 28 2R into your hands. My string height is 6/64" at 12th fret after I lowered the saddle 1/32" and made the neck straight as an arrow. I guess a neck reset would be next. I can not see any bridge rise.

Hello Ted! I had to work on the same model of guitar, and the belly on the top was huge, the truss rod was to its end (very stiff to turn), the bridge was lifting a bit and the frets were munched on the first positions. I could not get a decent action out of it, even lowering the saddle to the minimum possible. It was a nightmare to work on but the owner is happy anyway. Greetings from Italy!

There are many reasons, as have been stated here, to watch your videos. Personally, I watch with rapt attention for the small tips and hints that are in every repair. Those are really inspiring to me, aside form the education that they provide. Also: The Rooftop Singers used two custom made 12- string beasts on their hit 'Walk Right In'. Finally: You don't play a 12-stringer. You have a wrestling match with it -- tuning and playing.

Ref the cork pads for clamping the strings, I saw a really good tip elsewhere which was to use a length of hook and loop tape (velcro) to sandwich the strings.

Thanks for another great instructional video, your work is simply awesome. It is rare to see nice work done on 12 string acoustics, very interesting. I have an ibanez 12 string, cheaper instrument than the one you worked on and I managed to move the saddle slot to improve the intonation, it really needed it. Now I just might try to reverse strings as you did in the video. I have always wondered how that would play and also been frustrated when fingerpicking about the lack of bass strength

I've had one very similar from new (about 1978) they changed the name to CIMAR, the main differences: mine is all black and has a Zero fret. I've also just noticed the bridge shape is different too. Ted is correct the neck is better than a Gibson's the headstock prefers the neck too it's never decided to leave it.

I have 4 Ibanez electrics ranging from '78-'83. My first was a Les Paul styled '78 Ibanez Performer PF300NT. In '78 Ibanez was still using that scripted logo. I cannot tell you the year that they transitioned to the more modern Ibanez logo that they still use, however, my next guitar I bought was an '82 Artist AR305AV that certainly had the newer version.

Nice job! I sometimes think that working on a 12 string require more than twice the time and effort. I particularly liked your b string intonation tool, a very clever idea. In the 1970s Ibanez were one of the better Japanese brands, I have an AS100 Ibanez 335 style guitar which was built in 1979 and it’s an excellent instrument made with high quality materials and great sounding pickups.

I like fingerpicking my twelve string, but I usually keep it tuned down either a half step or full step. I don't know if I'd like the sound of swapping the fundamental and octave strings; I like the high note to be louder, which it mostly is for me, since the lower string pairs are usually plucked by the thumb. That Ibanez sounds great; mine is an Epiphone from the same era (early '70s), with a bolt-on neck. It's had some really awful work done to it (prior to my acquisition of it) involving large wood screws and copious amounts of glue, but somehow it still sounds amazing, at least to my ear. Nice job on that one.

12 thousandths is a TON of relief IMO. All my acoustics are no more than 4 thousandths max. To each their own, but acoustics play so much better with a straight of neck as possible. Good job on this one. Sounds great.

The rod was already really taut on this one.- A lot depends on playing style and I like about .008 if I can get it. Often times these old basement guitars can't manage it without a fret job.
