Love this! Context for Montero: Montero is Lil Nas X’s birth name (Montero Lamar Hill).The book Jack Harlow hands him to escape is the “book of Montero”, possibly symbolizing that the tool to set himself free was hidden inside his own story. There’s also a line early in the song that says “You call me Nas but the hood call me Doobie” as a reference to his childhood nickname.

Ok so here’s a little more information on the story: Lil Nas X blew up, like you said, with Old Town Road, and he’s been one of, if not the most successful commercial artists since then. Lil Nas’ biggest critics are those who say he is “an industry plant” or someone who is only popular because the industry props them up and pushes them to the forefront. Hence the name Industry Baby, so he’s poking fun at that. Also: The prison story here, I’m pretty sure, is because his last single that he released a while back was incredibly controversial, and the music video featured Lil Nas giving the Devil a lap dance. This outraged many people and that’s the reason he’s “in prison” now and they’re the people he refers to in this song as the one who were “never rooting for me anyway” and when he’s back at the top he’ll get his revenge. Love the reactions and love your channel, keep it up!

Lil Nas real name is Montero I believe. So he has started using it in his story telling. He first started it in Montero (one of his most controversial songs). There was a prelude to this song that shows why he was being convicted to the prison.

So, as you already know, Old Town Road is what put Nas X on the map. Shortly after releasing the song, he came out as gay so he wouldn't have to deal with any backlash later on into his career. Essentially, a take me as I am now, or not at all move. The song Industry Baby was an inception of public outrage over his song Montero, which was basically a depiction of some of the public response to his coming out of the closet, with him choosing to live his truth. The video for Montero held nothing back and further outraged those who were already criticizing him anyway,. As a result, they engaged in a failed effort to cancel him, however, Montero became another top hit. Industry Baby continues on that theme of folks condemning him for being different, while pointing out the fact that, despite their criticism, he's still going strong, and he's still producing top hits. Jack Harlow was appropriately featured in the video because his introduction to the industry was basically the same, with critics immediately trying to bring him down with rumors and other nonsense to make him out to look like a terrible person. His portion correctly points out the fact that if these critics didn't want them where they are now, they shouldn't have "gassed" them (allowed them into the spotlight to begin with), because they're here to stay. To understand a bit more of this, you'd have to watch the video for Montero, which carries its own meanings, one of which was that, essentially, if the public was going to judge and condemn him to Hell based on who he is, then not only was he going to accept that judgement, but he was going to own it.

I really liked your reaction. I have seen a lot (way to much) of these. Most are by young people. You guys are about my age. You were not that phased by it, it did not seem that shocking. We have seen a lot of crazy stuff, especially in music videos. We remember when MTV played music. Being shocking and sexual is nothing new. I am gay, so I have a somewhat different perspective. I’m sure you were that surprised when some rock, pop stars came out later in life. The fact that Lil Nas X came out at 22 while he was on top of the charts is amazing to me. Thanks for the review.
