Considering Sarah released a video where she compares a $10 recorder and a $1000 recorder, and the results are the $1000 has a slightly softer, deeper tone but the $10 one is a perfectly good instrument capable of doing everything the $1000 can, only not sounding quite as rich, the answer is pretty clear.

The only reason why all these recorder players appeared and that never happened for violas is because, despite all the memes, everyone knows violas are actual professional instruments. No one would be amazed if some violist came to say "Look at what we can do". Just because we all know it can do amazing things! The recorder, on the other hand, most people don't actually know it's a professional instrument, so people could learn from these roasting videos, and I get how these recorder players wanted to show what a recorder can really do

This video brought me to Sarah's channel and then to earnestly starting the recorder at 50 years! After 3,5 years and lots of practicing (YES, go practice!!!!! ;D ) I have reached quite a decent level for such a short time (but having a head start from playing flute as a teeenager and digging out my first grade school recorder in german fingering from time to time) and a lot of musical learning. I am now doing the whole quartett in C and F (still battling with reading the bass clef though) and playing in two ensembles. !!!Thank you very much, TwoSetViolin!!! By the way: Another quite difficult part about playin the recorder is tuning because the tone is very flexible and recorders not in tune with each other have lead to that really horrible reputation of the recorder. I am even thinking about trying the cello when I go into retirement ...

Just wanted to say this- I'm not a classical musician, never really loved listening to it( I used to just listen to pop music, sorry Brett lol). This channel exposed me to this genre of music, and I realized that I love it! Being a classical ballet student, the knowledge of classical music really helped me. Still not playing an instrument, but a proud subscriber and avid listener of classical music now! can you imagine... if, as a violin player, you had to master the Bass Viol, the Contrabass, the ViolonCello, the Cello, the Viola, the Violin, the treble violin, the mezzo violin and the descant violin? Not only that, but you had to be able to shift from one to the other during a performance.... without a mistake.
@catherineswan41473 жыл бұрын
It's an incorrect comparison. To play recorder is much easier than to play violin (I say it as a violin and flute player (which is harder then the recorder)). Even flute players should be able to play piccolo and alto flute, while violinist should only play violin. If the violin were such an easy instrument as the recorder, then violinist should play the whole violin family too.
@billyt88683 жыл бұрын
@@catherineswan4147 i genuinely don’t believe flute is harder than recorder at all. just saying. the fingering is simple and straight forward. keys instead of all open holes. there’s a reason baroque flute is harder than the modern flute…. and it’s much more like the recorder. the fingerings are absurdly complex. also flute and piccolo have identical fingering and are in the same key. recorders change key, fingering, and the player is expected to transpose pretty much any piece. oh, and they come in totally different tuning as well. not the same as playing every string instrument but seriously flute is not harder by any stretch.
@victorrutledge2573 жыл бұрын
@@billyt8868 I've played Viola, Violin, guitar, Trumpet, and tried to play the Flute, (lol, I passed out) The Recorder is an ancient instrument, and it is FAR from easy. I would expect violinists to know the Bass Clef, Treble, Tenor, Alto and even shaped notes, because that's just part of music, but Recorder Players have to actually PLAY those notes. When i had a professor, in University, who was a MASTER of recorder, I learned that the instrument had more to offer than any other, if the performer was up to the challenge. It's just a case of needing to know the depth of the pool, before you swim in it.
@naco55713 жыл бұрын
@@victorrutledge257 It's still an incorrect comparison. for an example, the bass and the viola require you to hold them different ways, use different techniques, etc. as well. being able to shift seamlessly from instrument to instrument should not be expected of violinists as it is expected of recorder players because violins are a lot bigger than their equivalent recorders. additionally, mastering the entire violin octet is not necessary as the violone and violin already cover the entire range of all the recorders.

Moving from Guitar to Bass guitar was no real difference, but from Trombone to Trumpet was. I enjoy Trombone most though.

@zorakuehne49154 жыл бұрын
@@rylanmerrick It's done here in the U.S. as well. While I am not a recorder professional, nor do I really know how to play it at all, one thing I have noticed is that the recorder is used as a bridge instrument in elementary schools (think 3rd year) to teach kids how to read music and basic finger dexterity, but just becomes a massive joke. I had a recorder concert at the end of 3rd grade with my entire grade playing at once, and my friend and I stood at the top center having a conversation instead of playing (not because we didn't respect it, we didn't like our teacher or the piece). The recorder is purely a joke amongst non-classical instrumentalists all around the world, I would assume.

Everyone makes this statement...to say you learned the instrument in 4th grade is kinda laughable if you think about it. You learned about it, but you didn't learn the instrument. At least I certainly didn't in my 4th grade experience. Nothing like the experience I had with a piano teacher for instance. To think, imagine if there were a passable $10 violin, that schools can easily afford, and gave that to hundreds of 4th graders. You would probably think the violin was a terrible instrument.
@IrisJoens Жыл бұрын
@@Jeanniebugg I had a similar experience! "Diagon Alley", "Stairway to Heaven", and "A Place to Call Home" (Uematsu) were big reasons why I had wanted to learn the flute; although I had learned the trumpet instead, due to various factors, when I eventually came around to picking up a recorder again as an adult, I realized how much I had misunderstood what I had heard as a child!

You realize of course, you've created a musical monster (especially with Lucie Horsch). Every video I've watched of hers, has multiple mentions of you guys now.😁 ...and the more I watch, the more impressed I am with her performances. She even did a little jazz thing a couple weeks ago that was just amazing! Talk about multi-genre. This gal's got it covered!😍😉👍👍

Wow, I had no idea recorders could actually sound good. I've honestly never heard a good example of recorder before, wonder how much more exciting the obligatory recorder lessons would've been if we could have heard pieces like this first?

I can appreciate the humor! It's just recorder players can get defensive because we are almost NEVER taken seriously. A lit of the time we get this reputation of never picking up a real instrument and therefore not real musicians. I know that wasn't the intention behind these videos and I really appreciate this video in responce!
@billyt88683 жыл бұрын
as someone who plays/played the bassoon and knows a thing about weird fingering, the fingering on a recorder is harder than any wind instrument by far. then to be able to play in different keys like it’s nothing 🤯
@engineer_with_issues3 жыл бұрын
I felt that way too much. There are entire orchestras build out of only recorders especially in the UK.
