When will people learn: do NOT get in the way of the marching band. Especially not the brass section. We WILL run you down. In competitions, if a judge gets in your way and you go around them, you will lose points. So we have to run them over. Trust me, I've done it before. Dotting the "I" in Ohio is a huge deal. The sousa always does the same thing. The camera guy was in the wrong place, but the sousa just did his thing which is what he is supposed to do. This is actually entirely the camera person's fault and the sousa player was most likely more worried about the horn than the camera.

Guy shouting in studio at 5:04 : Let me explain what happened to him, as a massive headset user I think I can explain: The bang on the door was on a low tune pretty close to what the man was playing and hearing in his headset, thus both audio waves went together in a synergical physical effet of superposition and blasted his ears. Most headsets are not equipped with sound isolation, those are much more costy and dangerous in urban situations were you need to be aware of surroundings they are not of widespread usage. This is not primarily a question of focus versus surprise, but since violin players may not be massive headset users you guys may not have the experience of this sound effect, you ears are very lucky imo this could damage them - proof in the video

5:53 Damaging brass instruments is actually extremely common, and not even near as looked down upon as it should be. Most high school band students have their fair share of either damaging, or seeing other people damage(I can speak from experience) their instruments, and therefore are (at least somewhat) desensitized to it. Of course they are still very careful with instruments of that value, but often have much less extreme reactions to damage than, for example, a violin player. EDIT: I also noticed that the slide itself was not damaged, but just the brace attaching the the slide to the rest of the instrument, which would probably be a very inexpensive repair, and more of an inconvenience than a major hit to your bank account.

And every oboist has his/her own way of reedmaking and own preferences in sound and thickness etc, this clip really shows the professionalism and playing level (sorry couldn't think of a better word, english is not my native language) of this oboist. Being from Ohio and watching the OSU marching band for years, that was actually the camera man’s fault for being too close because that bow is scripted. A sousaphone player always dots the I and they all do that bow. And he was so excited because there is such a long list and many don’t get to dot the I and if you do you only ever get to do it once. It’s a once in a lifetime experience so his excitement is 100% accurate.

Having banged my head with the bell of my trumpet several times, brass instruments hurt a lot when they hit you, and tubas, sousaphones, etc, hurt the most because they just have so much mass to pick up momentum with. Also, what I learned is that TwoSetViolin needs to bring on a marching band instructor to explain how competition grading works so they can understand why the band so readily abuses interlopers.

Well, on the other hand tv directors are also known to angrily shout "closer, closer, closer!" at cameramen through their earpieces. And the guy didn't "obliterate" the camera. It was just a little smack, only hit the lens hood. Otherwise the picture wouldn't have been perfect half a second after the hit. If you don't directly hit the lens glass with a heavy object, these broadcast cameras can take quite a beating. And quite frankly, the companies involved in such high-level broadcast productions don't care too much if a 30K lens breaks once in a while, as long as they get spectacular pictures.

Living for that oboe swap tho... Splitting your reed in the middle of a performance is the worst. Also once they have a rest the oboists can trade instruments back (they'll have spare reeds on them but it would've taken too long to put a new reed in and discreetly check tuning). Also def had a beginner oboe and an english horn actually fall apart in concerts (a specific screw loosened over time due to gravity that made the entire octave assembly go KA-CLUNK on the floor) and I oofed. Thankfully it was middle and high school band though so no biggie.

When the sousaphone smashed the camera, it’s during a thing called “Script Ohio.” The Ohio State University has a tradition of doing this at halftime of every home football game. Tubist here, finally my time to shine! As others have stated, in marching band you're explicitly told to run over non-performers on the field if they get in your way. It should also just be common sense to not be within striking distance of a sousa anyways. The kid dropping his tuba on his head after it slips off his chair is a thing that all young tuba players go through, I can't tell you how many times it happened to me in middle and early high school. I probably have some brain damage from it. Finally, a story of mine - in 2013 I was marching sousa for UW (University of Washington) against our rival WSU. We were lined up on the side of their field for half-time before the second quarter ended, and one of the football players got tackled into our section leader's sousaphone. His helmet went straight into the body of the sousa and left a huge cannonball-sized dent in it, rendering it unplayable. The silver lining in this story is that it was -5F on the field, so all the brass instruments were freezing and unplayable anyways! Our instrument tech was... less than pleased with what had happened. P.S. I'm surprised none of the sousa players had their goosenecks fly off while marching, especially chair-steeping like Ohio State does. That's probably the #1 thing you're terrified of (we don't really care about hitting other people; we're bigger than you).

Loved playing in my high school marching band as a sousaphone; it is so tough marching and even jogging or running performances while trying to maintain strong airflow... Literally months of practicing: where to be at what time on a football field, keeping track of the memorized piece in your head, where to look for a drum major... so many factors. You can bet your butt that if someone crosses the line IM supposed to sprint through in 3 counts... yea I'll apologize later but FUS RO DAH!!!!!!

The sous that hit the camera is doing what he's supposed to do by not reacting to hitting the cameraman. In marching band you cannot break your composure and it's a well known rule to not get in the way of the band or the colorguard, they WILL keep going, and they will NOT stop to see if you're okay, as you, the one on the feild with them, should not be in their way. It wasn't that he was too hyped to care, he just wasn't going to break character all because someone got in his way xD Marching bands are very well known for running people over and there are plenty of clips of marching bands running over someone that was in their way. Not gonna ruin the picture just because someone doesn't get out of the way lol

We flushed it out with a high pressure hose and sob if there wasn't a dead rat in it. The rat had climbed in it and gotten stuck and its putrid decomposing body was the source of the offensive odor. We ended up washing out the horn with 1000s of gallons of water and detergent before it was playable once again.

I love that you guys did a video on tubas and sousaphones. And yes in marching band if someone is in your way you run them over you do not stop with the sousaphone. Brass sousaphones can way up to 50 pounds. Also on a side note I understand the pain of the slipping tuba. I've had the mouthpiece jab me in collarbone because it fell off of the chair. Thank you all and keep up the great work.

As someone who used to be a regular attendee of the Rose Parade, since I was small (like we camped out on Colorado Blvd to save our spots), I knew never to get in the way of the marching band EVER. I remember the parade police constantly making sure that people never crossed the line drawn in the street, to try and get closer. I remember someone asking why, because we initially thought it was so that nobody does anything to the floats, or messes with the parade, but it was actually to avoid getting trampled by the marching bands. Some of the bands were so big, their lines came out all the way to the line on the street and they were *not* looking out for unexpected people in the way. As the audience, we were the ones who had to be spatially aware.
