Eddy had just played a wrong note that was higher than what he was supposed to be playing-that’s what the “overtone” was
@pierresauce83072 жыл бұрын
@@jamaluddinkhalifa8371 Overtones in this context are unintentional harmonics that result from improper technique. Press the middle of a string against the fingerboard and vibrate it, two notes will be produced. The lower/main note is called the fundamental, the overtone is a much higher note that comes from the upper section of the string. When these produce undesirable sounds you can prevent the overtone from sounding by muting the upper section of the string, but they were new to this instrument and were just focusing on even making any notes at all. So she was basically saying he had bad form.

Literally any time any violinist picks up a bass for the first time: "I didn't realize how big it was!" "This bow is so heavy!" "How do you even push down the strings?" Every time. Without fail. Finally, muster enough courage to watch this episode at the end of 2021. Just want to say thank you to Twoset and Phoebe, this video means so much to me as an ex-bassist. I have learnt the double bass for nearly a decade, but I remember I played really poorly. I don't have much strength, can't even hold the bow properly (I was doing the french bow). The music education I received was very exam-oriented so I was really bad at sight-reading and felt like I could only play the three pieces from the ABRSM and still played it badly. Also, I didn't practice enough, partly because I was lazy and also partly due to other factors in life. Even my teacher once suggested I should quit learning when I was preparing for my Grade 8 exam. I cried a lot and told her I wish to just stop it after I passed grade 8 because we have already spent so much time on it. I literally just passed the exam, still believed the examiner took pity on a little girl (I looked younger than my actual age)and just give me the pass when my playing didn't justify it. Then I never once touched my bass and it has been 8 years since. I thought it meant I didn't like double bass that much and it doesn't matter. And later I just locked away some of my memories...for example, If you asked me at the start of this year, I don't even remember how to read bass clef but can at least read treble and tenor clef given the time. However, I found your channel in the middle of this year and you guys bring me so much joy. Slowly but surely, I started to remember stuff related to double bass. The exam pieces I used to play, the beautiful harmonic sound when I go beyond 5th position, some funny stories when I was playing in the orchestra. And there's suddenly one day I realize I actually can read the bass clef, it just clicked in my head. And I have been tempted to start learning an instrument since I joined this community. I've always wanted to learn piano, and the tone of cello/flute is very lovely, but I realize if I am ever going to start playing any instrument again, I would still pick double bass. (But double teachers are so rare in where I live and I can't even find any double bass sheet music in music stores that are NOT syllabus of ABRSM LOL) I guess this means deep down I am still very fond of double bass and thank you for letting me make little peace with my past self. Back to the video, it was hilarious to see you guys now understand what it was like to play the bass! And even better when Phoebe just roasted you. I remembered the pain from playing but I don't remember I ever complained so much XD It is also funny to see Brett did a finger vibrato on the bass and Eddy whined about the pinky when you were not even pressing on the thickest string. Definitely give me a confidence boost when I think back to my experience of playing! Thank you so much. 2022 is approaching whilst I am typing this, once again thank you Brett and Eddy for the love and passion of classical music you shared with me and many others in the world. Wish you a happy new year from the bottom of my heart!

I'd love to see them try to play the clarinet. Even putting it together would be a challenge for them, since I doubt they play any wind instruments.
@missis_jo5 жыл бұрын
Once you get the hang of how to produce a sound on the clarinet, which can be done in about 10 to 20 minutes (sure, not a full, rich sound, but a decent, recignizable one), it's actually not such a big step to playing simple pieces like 'Are you sleeping' or sth. Not with their musical background anyway. So I wouldn't wonder if after one hour of clarinet practice they can produce better results than on the double bass. The demanding thing on the bass is to have enough strength in your fingers to pull down the strings. If they don't touch the board, you are not able to produce any recognizable sound. Coming from violine myself (and being a carpenter on top, meaning I am used to lifting heavy weights), I couldn't practice for more than 5 minutes within one hour for the first weeks! It felt like risking a tendonitis. And that starts over and over again, once you had longer breaks. It's really not so much about technique in the beginning, but about strength.
@fingmoron4 жыл бұрын
@@missis_jo yea I'd argue the same, I haven't played in a while but used to play clarinet to quite a high level, it's relatively easy to produce notes and string together a sequence. Obviously the better you get the more complicated sounds and sequences you can play but within an hour you could definitely play some easy songs. It's one of the easier wind instruments and instruments in an orchestra overall imo.

Strange ... I used to be an amateur bassist and made the opposite experience: As long as we played fine the bass section's job was just taken for granted and we were rarely consciously heard, even by the conductor. But as soon as something went wrong, conductors typical noticed immediatley. Look here to see how much attention some conductors give the bass section :-) kzbin.info/www/bejne/n16UfKeJhNx_jqc

Lol I remember when I was teaching a 10 year old bass a couple months ago, and as soon as he picked it up he nearly dropped it! I had completely forgotten how unexpectedly heavy it was the first time I picked it up 🤣

My dad has a dad who has a dad who had a hobby of learning all sorts of instruments, so he has a double bass. I remember as a child, going inside the softcase, sometimes with my sister. It's absolutely massive.

YES!!!!!!!! DOUBLE BASS!!! We get used to how heavy it is so actually it is not as heavy over time. Also, we usually stand or go on special stools. You guys were pretty good actually for it being your first time! I actually learned this piece myself and it is actually a bit harder for beginners!😋

It really isnt that heavy, its heavy when you have to carry it across campus to the stage and up stairs, otherwise its pretty light.

To be fair, 5 string basses are generally heavier than 4 strings. I made the switch to 5 a few years ago and it's been giving my arms a workout lmao
