Zoey is actually a musician and singer. She can play the guitar and piano. I'm surprised she was so awkward on the violin.

@MissTwoSetEncyclopedia 4 жыл бұрын
@Piteus X Compared to the others, she did quite well, especially if it was her first time playing the violin. She hold it the right way, placed the bow between the bridge and the fingerboard, did something that almost looked like violin fingering and even managed to find some pitches. I mean, the band recognized the song she was trying to play ! I'm not sure how you could expect more from a total beginner... If you compare that to Scarlett Johansson's "performance", who is also a singer who has been working with musicians for 15 years and yet had no idea how to hold an instrument when she was on the show, Zooey Deschanel did much better !

Asa a percussionist, i must say, THAT IS THE WRONG BEATING SPOT FOR TIMPANI, IT SHOULD BE NEAR THE EDGE, NOT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DRUM. You're right, the most challenging part in playing timpani is changing notes, because we need to tap the drum(s) quietly and listen to it while all the other players of the orchestra play, and it's not unusual we have to change note during a very loud passage, which makes listening to the drum more difficult, and then we should do that while counting the rests, yes there is a tuning gauge on each drum, but the tuning gauge is not accurate, so we still need some fine adjustment to the pitch. There is no such thing as a specific instrument named "marching band drum", only Marching Snare Drum, Marching Tenor Drum (or quads, or tom tom), and Marching bass drum. And the drum showed there is a regular concert snare, marching snare has more depth, and the sound is very articulate. And I assume by "perfect drum roll" they mean a buzz roll, and you achieve the perfect buzz roll by squeezing the stick enough, but not to tight, so that the stick can bounce multiple times in one stroke.

You know, the thing about Vanessa having that dress while playing the cello is similarly used in an episode of Detective Monk. While thinking about else, the protagonist casually notices the wife of a victim wearing that same kind of dress, thus proving her claim to be playing the cello while the murder happened to be a lie.

I'm actually a percussionist myself and watching her hit the Timpani was kinda painful. Also, the marching snare is different to the concert snare. The concert snare is actually what she played. A marching snare has an entirely different sound. It's far louder and heavier along with the top being a lot more tight. A concert snare is tunable as well. Back to the Timpani, she hit it in the middle. When playing the Timpani, you need to play at the edges to reduce the flat sound and make the notes and pitches clearer. And when tuning during concert, it is extremely difficult. Considering the rest of the band/orchestra is playing during you tuning, it's sometimes hard to hear what notes you are trying to get. You have to have a very in tune ear as well. My first time playing I feared that I wasn't hitting is soft enough so that the audience couldn't hear me but I have definitely gotten over that. Also, for both the Timpani player and the snare player held the sticks wrong. It's hard to explain though... Also, the lady held the trombone by the Bell when there are literally specific handles for where your hands go... Yeah, just being my geeky self... But that's just a little information on percussion.

Thank you for commenting all this so I didn't have to! And as a percussionist, there's no feeling like when you have a timpani piece that requires many changes, but most of them the tubas are playing the note you need so there's no way the audience will be able to hear you and you have a reference pitch.

As a timpanist in pit during marching season, I appreciate you covering this so I didn't need to rant. Though to add my piece, a perfect drumroll isn't a thing. There are so many styles of music that call for different types of rolls, no on even with years of experience can play a perfect roll; like long tones on wind instruments, they can always be played better. Did anyone find it funny that technique-wise the person playing timpani was closer to german grip while the person playing snare was closer to french grip?

story time: my old violin teacher had a friend who came up to her one day and said, "so i have this new student who is left handed and their previous teacher taught them the violin in reverse", so the strings were all switched and the student was playing it on the right side.
@MissTwoSetEncyclopedia
@MissTwoSetEncyclopedia 4 жыл бұрын
The thing is that a violin isn't symmetrical. Switching the strings isn't enough, someone who really wants to play like that would have to get a customized violin, especially built for him/her. That's so messed up, this student will have to learn everything again from the start... I'm just imagining an orchestra where everyone would choose his/her side, all the string players would stab each other with their bows! 😅

So a couple of things about the trombone: cheeks should not be puffed out like a puffer fish. The slide is held by 2 or 3 fingers on that middle bar and the intsrament is held on the other bar with the other hand not the bell. Yes it can take a lot of air to play but if you support and don't puff out your cheeks its way easier. Weirdly this makes want to pick up my trombone and practice and I haven't played a note since high school. So good job twoset for the inspiration!

As a cellist, this brings me physical pain- Not just from the bad cello playing but from my undying passione to want to practice But knowing that Giorno Giovanna has a dream is not sufficient enough. You don't *dream* about practising. You just *practice.* Thank you, I'm sure you have the will to practice now if you were patient enough to read this to the end. Even if you're a disappointment, that's always better than never practising and having no other will for talent in life! Always remember, practice, and you shall never regret it. Edit: thank you for all the likes, I hope you all achieve your own heaven :)))

As a percussionist i can confirm that is an extremily cheap snare drum and nothing like a marching snare. Also, we dont 'lie' on the timpani. We bend over to position our ear to the timpani and tap the head quietly shipe tuning so no one hears us tuning.
