I'd say your assessment is spot-on. It's a cool performance, but not their best song by a long shot. Peter Murphy has always been a very athletic performer and was a handsome gent back in his day.

They are old school gothic rock they were there in the begin of it all. they were one of the few gothic rock bands back in the 70s and 80s to start that genre. I'm surprised they are still around. Bela Lugosi was an actor who was famous for starting the Dracula craze back in the day and this song is essentially I guess in honor of him. It was them and groups like The Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees as well as Joy Division to start the genre of gothic Rock back then.
@darthrocker28493 жыл бұрын
I hesitate to call Bauhaus "goth", as there just weren't sub-generes back then. However, they were definitely the harbinger of things to come. I most definitely wouldn't call Joy Division goth at all. I absolutely detest that we feel the need to pigeon hole
@asisterofmercy6 ай бұрын
@@darthrocker2849 Bauhaus were without doubt at the forefront of original 'Goth' scene/sound )I was a Goth in the early 80's, the Genre was there). Joy Division were noted as being the originators of the thereafter 'Gothic' sound (I would argue for The Doors). Both were PostPunk as it was, as was a large number of groups later categorised as Goth
@marcus8124 жыл бұрын
Bela Lugosi was mostly famous for his portrayal of Dracula. Peter Murphy is the singer. The bands heyday was the '80's and helped inspire the Goth scene. This song is more atmospheric tongue in cheek goth/pop.

Bela Lugosi was a horror film actor in the 1930's. His life took a downside in the 50's when he was hooked on booze and moriphine. He died a pauper. And turned into a legend.

He is singing "Undead", because Bela Lugosi was very famous for playing Dracula back in the black/white film era.

Bauhaus were formed in Northampton, England, in 1978 and were a seminal band of the nascent Goth genre. Bela Lugosi’s Dead was their first single released on the 6th August 1979 and is considered the harbinger of gothic rock music and has been immensely influential on contemporary goth culture. The song draws on the imagined imagery around the death of the Hungarian actor Béla Ferenc Dezső Blaskó (October 20, 1882 - August 16, 1956), known professionally as Bela Lugosi who started in the 1931 film “Dracula” (directed by Tod Browning ) and was a staple as the eponymous vampire in a number of films released by Universal Pictures throughout the 1930’s, hence the ‘chorus’ “Bela Lugosi’s dead…..undead……..undead”

Bauhaus was one of the first bands I heard when I took interest in gloom and gothic rock, especially from England. This band, along with The Cure, The Damned, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division and others that gave me insight away from Disco and Rock that I was only hearing in South Florida at the time. I recommend listening to Peter Murphy's "Cuts You Up" and "Indigo Eyes".

I was lucky enough to see them at this show at Coachella, I also caught them in 1997 at the Hollywood Paladium. They put on an amazing show at Coachella, the atmosphere was perfect, it was windy enough that the fog machines looked nice & creepy (those weren't fans blowing the smoke around). He also did a song from the top of the stage lights, about 40 feet up. The saddest part of the day was seeing all the Goths in the medical tent due to heat exhaustion, it was over 100 & not a good day to be dressed in all black, well not until the sun went down, that's when all the bats come out!

Do a Siouxsie & the Banshees reaction (probably most popular song would be 'Spellbound') - you'll probably understand the scene Bauhaus was coming from in the late 70s-early 80s better.

This song was released on 12inc vinyl and was an anthem to all the lost soul that were left over from the 70 punk movement in the uk, remember it being played in the Limit club in Sheffield 40 years ago.

Bela Lugosi was an actor who became famous for portraying Dracula in the 1930s and other roles in horror movies. Hence the reason why he's singing hanging upside down like a vampire. And Bauhaus were an English Goth band form the 80s whose lead singer is Peter Murphy who also released solo albums.
@Azabaxe80Ай бұрын
Murphy was a 48 year old man here. A person can normally hang upside for about 15 minutes before passing out. Singing while hanging upside down is a different thing altogether. This was an inspired artistic choice at a time when music is not art.
