why cant Mexico be expensive ?
@daniellamarinucci547510 күн бұрын
@@thatmonster8 when the staff make $5 dollars a day, but the drinks are $40 cad, that's more then anywhere else except vegas. I don't know anywhere where its 50$ cad to go 5-10 minutes in a taxi other than the Cancun to Tulum strip and you can't bargain. But down the street in Tulum central its cheap, its hotel zone, cabs that makes it out of the ordinary and makes Europe look so cheap in places where there isnt garbage dumping all over the place. Everything in this video was spot on and you can visit knowing all this and know how to handle it. The cenotes and Yucatan culture is still very special. You still can bargain at shops in English but cabs forget it. They charge high prices to to latino travelers too.

I was planning on going to Tulum for my birthday as a solo traveller. From watching this video twice (different times) youve convince me to make a hard pass I'm not supporting a place that takes advantage of its main source of income. I don't want to be walking around feeling like someone's bank machine. The Mayans would have been ashamed of what has become of their sacred city. I loved this video, thanks

Just returned from a 2 week-vacation in Tulum (2 adults, 2 teenage kids). First timers and I can truly confirm all of the things being said in the vid. Never ever in my whole life I had felt such an exploitation just because of being a visitor. It literally felt like manoeuvring through an obstacle course made of scam which was really annoying. I blame it on fast growth of this place and the unstoppable greed for money, both from locals and foreign investors. Don’t get me wrong - there are hidden gems to be found and in our case the beach (Playa Santa Fe) was absolutely flawless but in the way travellers are being treated I would say that this is the beginning of the downfall of Tulum. Which is a shame, but self made. “You can fool some people sometimes, but you can’t fool all the people all the time” (Bob Marley) P.S.: a friend of ours was witness of a cartel related shooting in one of the beach clubs where 2 two foreigners got killed by stray bullets on Friday, feb 9th. The DJ didn’t even pull down the volume. This is just sick.

Sorry you had a bad experience 🥹 this is exactly why we made this video, we felt like people should be aware before heading there. Of course, everyone is going to have a different experience while visiting, but me, personally, I would only recommend Tulum if you are going to stay in an all inclusive hotel (which you will not hear me recommend often, if ever).

We live in Cancun. The taxis there are expensive but NOTHING can compare to the rates in Tulum! It’s horrible there! Less than 15% of hotels and homes are connected to a sewage system. Everyone else dumps the sewage into the waters that feed into cenotes. Avoid this town!

I paid $25 for a cab 5 min to the grocery store, another $25 back. Groceries are running me $350/week. If I eat out it's $50 for one person and it's not good! I'm here right now, and everything other than the police shakedown (fingers crossed) is or has happening/happened to us. I'm also Hispanic and speak Spanish fluently which doesn't prevent the scams or price gouging. Im here for a week with my wife for her birthday and planned on a budget that would be more than enough for a week on South Beach (or Iowa 😉), and I can also confirm that it will definitely need to be increased! Not because we're doing crazy, wild, exclusive things. Just normal stuff like hitting the beach and having 2 to 3 drinks each. I swear, if this place could charge you for air, they would. Las Vegas has nothing on Tulum. Oh, one thing I don't think this video mentioned, if you want to see the Ven a la Luz statue, it's also behind a pay wall and costs. It'll cost you $60 pesos for 60 seconds. It's very beautiful here, but the price gouging leaves you with regret at the end of it. 3 out of 10 - Don't recommend.
@twosolesabroad9 ай бұрын
Sorry you are having similar experience. That is very true, being hispanic and speaking Spanish definitely doesn't prevent most of the things we mentioned in Tulum. As for the Ven a la Luz statue, you actually got a discounted price, because we paid $80 MXN for 60 secons, we actually mention that in our video about "Things to do in Tulum" 😄, it seems like they change the prices depending on the time of the year and the mood. Loved your video! After watching your video, I no longer want to go to Tulum but unfortunately we have already purchased tickets. What is the best way to get from tulum airport to our air bnb, which looks to be about 15 minutes from the airport.

Just back from the resorts and everything is true about this place extorting money at every turn. The resorts charge extra for everything, like $10 USD to rent a towel at the pool. You don't even need a towel, the sun will dry you under 1 minute. A pack of doritos in the gift shop is $15 USD, we did not buy them. The resort food is not good and the drinks are not good either. I would suggest not buying anything extra as the quality will not merit the inflated prices.

I feel mexico is just small India with much less development. Getting scammed for prices in India is kinda hard because prices are written on every single thing unless you take a personal taxi and not uber. Overall from your other videos, I was feeling pretty confident that I am good at negotiations especially being from Asia. But after this video, I kinda feel scared myself. Tulum is off the table for me now. I live in Canada, and travelling in Canada from Regina to Vancouver is more expensive than travelling from Calgary to Mexico and come back. So wanted some warmer climate as well. Anyways, try India sometime and this was such an informative video tho. I want to get one of those scooters permanently here. Not sure if Canada will accept it.

I would love to get information of the transportation from Airport you were talking about for $90. Because I have a big family doing in few months. Thank you.

Tulum is totally fine. Its a great place to spend a holiday. I have been shaken down by the cops but it was because I was speeding like crazy down the highway. They did the whole you can pick your license up at the station thing but I gave him 400 pecesos instead and it was all good. If you arent completely dumb you can go to tulum cheap. Go to the grocery store buy booze, lots of cheap taco stands, get a nice place for like $130 a night. Just be smart. No need to worry and cancel your trips its a good spot but just know that youre not in America anymore, so just act right and you will be fine, you're in another country remember.

Am having anxiety attack since am visiting Tulum in 3 weeks. My biggest worry is taxis. Paying 25 bucks for 5 min drive is not sitting well with me

I feel you. Don’t stress too much. Just keep your guard up and you’ll be okay! ❤️ we can share our taxi driver info, just message us on IG. At least you will have someone reasonably priced when needed. 🫶🏼

How much should I have to spend in USD for a week in Tulum?
@twosolesabroad7 ай бұрын
Hard to tell, depends where you want to stay and what you want to do. But whatever you budget I would multiply it by 2.

hey can you expand on your experience with the police, did they just not find your money and let you go? or did the threaten jail time? planned a 1 month trip, but considering canceling
@twosolesabroad9 ай бұрын
we never carried large amounts of money on us (meaning, over $20), and when we did we would hide it, so they never saw any money on us. They also check your phone case, so that's not a great hiding spot. For us, for as many times we got pulled over, I think we were useless to them as we were never afraid, did anything wrong or had money on us, we were also cool with them, but I had two friends, who called us about their experiences, one said that they put them in handcuffs and took money from their purses (that was at night in the Hotel Zone), and another friend got pulled over while driving a rental car (they took the wrong turn, so they were in the wrong), but instead of a ticket they got asked to pay $150 USD or they will take their drivers license and that will be available for pick up at the police station. Since they didn't know what to do and didn't want to be inconvenienced, they paid the $150 and were on their way. That is one of their tactics, to which some locals told us that if you are in the wrong to just basically hand them $20. If they see that you have money and that you are scared, they will definitely take advantage of that. It's a wild west out there.

Lol living in Mexico for almost two years now. People paying that much for a cab is insane. Anywhere else you would pay like 60-100 pesos. Good thing I have a car 🚗. Actually moving back to Tulum or Playa (can’t decide) in May ❤

Omg, the taxi prices in Tulum are ridiculously expensive! It's become a corrupt town, which wasn't the case before COVID.

My experience in tulum has been good, other than taxis. They have a chart thay they all use to price fix. Everytime I complain they pull out the chart. Other than I love the food, theres some amazing places in the town. But its better to blend in, Im lucky that Im brown I so never get bothered by anyone. When I traveled with my Russian friends they never got bothered either. We walked around the town late at night everywhere. But this was before the new airport opened up. I'm assuming with the new airport things have changed.

Hello what do you guys know about Uber from the airport?
@twosolesabroad2 ай бұрын
Hi! There is no Uber in Cancun or Tulum, and if you are able to call one it’s still best not to. Taxi drivers are NOT happy about Ubers so they don’t allow them there

WOW! Been to Mexico 3 times and tulum 2 times and none of this ever happened to us, however my boyfriend is Mexican and I look very Mexican as well. I truly feel bad for foreigners looking like gringos that they can take advantage of 😢

Occidental Tucancún We were thinking of Or maybe we avoid that altogether and go to Playa de Carmen where would you stay?
@LiliHugoUM5 ай бұрын
Correct! Don't visit Riviera Maya anymore, because part of the problem is foreigners and gentrification. And just remember that in the US you pay the same or more for taxis, food, hotels, services, and the difference is that the US is not a Caribbean paradise, nor does it have beautiful beaches.

Sheesh! Thanks for the info! I'll just go to Vegas and see Tiesto for free with free parking free entry free drinks. The Airbnb might be more costly but there won't be mold and mosquitos.
