I remember a fishing trip I was on years ago on a cattle boat out of Oxnard. We were fishing about 1200 feet down (damn near spooled my Long Beach 68 with 50 LB Dacron) I literally was on my line backer fishing that deep with that reel. I was running a five hook rig similar to your rig with 3 lbs to hit bottom. The difference was I was running #3/0 drop shot hooks and imagine my surprise when I came up with 5 Sand Dabs all under a foot all of them blatantly hooked like they were bait fish through the mouth. After the third run of dropping bait and coming up with 5 Sand Dabs I sent it right back down. Imagine my surprise when I almost took Jackpot when that rig came back up and it felt like I hooked bottom. 2 Cow Cod and a Broom Tail Grouper along with a Halibut that was 4 inches under limit. I would send Anchovies down, come up with Sand Dabs, send them back down still hooked, and them come up with much larger fish. Another guy on the boat watched me and changed his rig up, got some Sand Dabs, sent them back down, and suddenly had a lot of reason to be happy with the trip. the Jackpot fish was taken by the other kid on that boat beside myself after he used one of the Sand Dabs I had caught to catch a whopper of a Ling Cod that almost pulled him off the boat when he hooked up. I was kind of surprised how such a small fish would get caught by such a ridiculously oversized fishing hook. They are GREEDY little bastards and are themselves QUITE tasty but they also make great bait too.

Hey I loved the video I'm interested in catching sand tabs around Fort Bragg and noticed that you are fishing out of Albion I'm stoked to see a fisherman on KZbin around my area! Maybe one day we can fish together!

Sandabs in Bragg? Just north of the whistle bout out of noyo harbor, run about 700 feet north of the bouy and drift back toward the bouy, there are some nice dabs n other flatties

With a light spinning rod, they are still pretty fun to catch. Just sucks if hook a dogfish.

With your rig that your making with your three hooks, How do I make the rig? do I tie them up?

+William HonanI use 40 Lbs. test on the main line, its about 5 to 6 feet long. I tie 3 loops about 12 to 14 inches apart on the main line, starting about a foot down from the top. You want to put a swivel at the top, then a snap swivel at the bottom for the weight. Then I use 30 lbs. test on the hook lines. I make those about 10 - 12 inches long. I use the heavy rig because every now and then you will get a small shark.

+geekyPIANOman I'm not familiar with the Monterey area. I would think any sandy bottom, in water 100 to 185 feet deep would have sand dabs in it. Good luck and thanks for watching.

Interesting! Is that an average size for sand dabs? What is the limit? That seems to be an awefully heavy rod for such small fish. Thanks for the information sir!

Most are 4 to 10 inches. You can keep the small ones off by using large hooks. There is no limit on them. I use the same rod for most everything, to lazy to change rods.
