FZ09 MT09 Shock Removal And Installation Guide - This is a comprehensive fz09 mt09 shock install removal and upgrade guide. I'll show you how to remove your shock assembly, install a new one from Penske (I used the double clicker) and talk about why a shop like Stoltec is a great option to buy from. I do highly suggest you order or fabricate a better mount than what Penske gives you however, unless you don't care. Stoltec suggests measuring rider sag using the Race Tech method, I do it as Dave Moss shows. Either way in my opinion gets you there for street use, they are very very close. Just be sure however you measure, you do the front and rear the same way. You can get a great deal on your suspension parts at StoltecMoto.com - tell um TWO sent ya (I don't get anything)!

Hi Bryan-Absolutely love and greatly value these tutorial videos. (As well as your reviews). You are a big reason a non mechanical guy like me now has the confidence to perform basic maintenance on my 2016 Super Tenere ES. Has saved me $, time and provided peace of mind knowing the service was done right. I found many of the core steps are similar to my Tenere so I feel your FJR & FZ service video’s are transferable to other bikes as well. Appreciate you sharing!

Good video, I found it easy to swap my shock today just by jacking the bike up by the right foot peg, it made a tripod with the side stand and front tire that was very stable. Then I used a ratchet strap through the rear rim and over the rear subframe to manipulate the mounting holes to line up. Piece of cake!

Thank you for doing this video. I was on a budget so I went with the K-Tech Razor and I'm going to install it hopefully tomorrow. The pogo sticking on the rear factory shock has been driving me crazy. It's caused me to kick out the back end and do a small drift a few times, caused the back end to hop in some corners and just all around feels spongy and kinda reminds me of the old mashed potates and gravy suspension on like an old crown vic or something, just seems completely outdated and wouldn't have cost Yamaha too much to put a proper rear shock on the bike from the get go. On my 2018 I adjusted both fronts and set the dampening and I've gotten that one to be very planted and comfortable, no more brake dive and it's helped stabilize the rear more but definitely hasn't hidden the problem. I am looking forward to getting on it and being able to have more fun and overall will be safer to ride by getting rid of that pogo sticking. I'm 190lbs without gear and I have the front set down on the 2nd to last ring on the tops (so one ring showing) and have setup the rebound as well. I used to have it set to 2 rings showing and have adjusted the rear suspension one click tighter and that did make a difference but it still is doing all the stuff mentioned above, just more controllable.

Great video! If I could add another couple of tips - if you have an abba type stand that holds the bike up near the swingarm pivot, you can manipulate the rear linkage easier if you take out the lower dogbone linkage bolt (don't forget to replace on installing!) and you can regulate the wheel height by using a ratchet strap thru wheel and over seat. Means you can precisely regulate bolts lining up.

I have no idea how you got that bolt on the bottom back. I dropped my bike trying to lift it etc but I got work done and its awesome but I wish I have taken it to the shop and pay $60 instead of scratching my bike and my lowerback... very tricky thing to do. I had to buy tools to get to those bolts too. You should not make it look easy lol tell people the truth! without right tools and experience it will be a nightmare. especcialy if you are by yourself and no friend to help lol learned a lesson

Not sure if it was mentioned but the 14-16 FZ09s have the oil drain bolt on the bottom of the pan so it's not flat like yours is. Either use towels to cushion the pan, or spread the rear using one of the other methods if you have an aftermarket exhaust.

Just did this on my 2019 MT09 using an Ohlins 535. I will add that the top bolt doesn't just "knock out", my bike has two beefy hydraulic lines crossing the top of the bolt, they needed to be "massaged" aside. Ohlins also instructs to remove the lower dogbone bolt, I discovered that unless one DOES the lower shock bolt (delightfully recessed into the shock clevis making common wrenches nearly useless) won't get above the swing arm frame. Once there though sockets rule the day.

I am more concerned the bike's balance when the shock is removed. Would it be more stable if I use the center lift instead (in addition with the rear stand)? The center lift is just to prevent the bike from dropping.

Thank you for this awesome video. Are you 99.9999% certain the catalytic converter/stock exauast will work as a jacking up point? I don't want to damage my exhaust. Alternatively I could place a 2/4 under the oil pan instead of a text book and this should allow the jack to lift via the oil pan and not the exhaust. Or I could place a few shims under one or the other and spread the weight between the exhaust and oil pan. Maybe I just answered my own question. Thanks again.

Thank you for the video. I own a 2017 FZ-09 as well. Forgive me, but I can't help but think that after all the upgrades I've done on my bike that I could have bought a better bike - say a Triumph Street Triple. Just saying. ...
@TwoWheelObsession
@TwoWheelObsession 6 жыл бұрын
That is true, and that's the point of the FZ series. They are bare bones bikes meant to be personalized and upgraded and are CHEAP. Still there are core differences between the platforms. For example I hate the riding position and pegs of the Street series but otherwise love the bike. But you certainly do pay for it. In the end I now have a bike perfectly suited to me, built exactly the way I wanted and it's still a good bit cheaper than a fully loaded ST equivalent. Not counting my labor of course ;)

Yes the Kawasaki shocks going on FZ MT09 are another internet legend. Most have to be modified, and only a couple of years of zzx9 or something like that are a close fit, others require some chopping away of the bike and some the hole in the shock needs enlarged. Not a problem for wreck it ralph that follows the internet! The Kawa shocks need to be correctly resprung and they also need to be rebuilt to be very good, which brings the price up to within $200 of getting a perfect fit Ohlins or other brands, which are down to about $550 american dollars now.

Bought a replacement shock (Nitron) and now find that the ABS brake lines and 4 other lines block access to the top shock-bolt. The brake lines are really tight the others are held together with cable ties and can barely move. I can't use anything bigger than a small screwdriver blade through the frame window to just touch the bolt head and then only from an angle. Questions: Did you have this problem with access? Did the bolt just sit in the left side of the clevis while you removed and then replaced the shock? (If the bolt falls there is no access from above (ABS unit and lines) and from below it would require a tiny hand to get access.) Thanks in advance. Don
@TwoWheelObsession
@TwoWheelObsession 6 жыл бұрын
You don’t need to remove the bolt just slide it enough out of the way. The lines move enough.
@dondempsey7113
@dondempsey7113 6 жыл бұрын
You're right. The lines can move enough it you apply force and everything lines up. There is no way of getting any sort of tool between the lines and the bolt, but those same lines prevent the bolt from falling out of the LHS of the clevis. Unfortunately when I used a screw driver blade to push the bolt back though the shock the bolt head didn't align with the detent on the clevis. I had to cut three cable ties and take out the bolt holding the lower ABS-lines junction block to loosen the lines enough to get a finger between the lines and the bolt head to align it. But without your KZbin post and (speedy) response I would have probably paid the shop $150+ to install the new shock. So thanks again for the video(s) Don

I’m about to upgrade suspension on my 2018 MT 09. Probably going to go with this same rear but the front upgrade you did is just more than I feel capable of. No doubt, it's not pocket change. But, seeing it in person will ease your mind. Riding on one, will make you a believer. Fully CNC'd aluminum, designed and produced in the US, and 100's of thousands of miles on the road and track to back the design up. This particular shock for the FZ-09 was a joint development between Penske and Stoltec Moto going on 4 years ago. Its continuously evolved over that time based on customer feedback, so back to the video: not an off the shelf item, and definitely not 'one size fits all'.
