Thank you so much - I am a novice when it comes to Harley maintenance. Other folks have me pulling the clutch cover off and replacing the gasket. I like the way you simply drain it and get access at the chain to add the clean oil. Much easier! Just did it to my 2002 Dyna Wide Glide!

Hey Rocco. I changed my engine oil one month ago with Mobil 1 V-Twin Motorcycle 20W-50 Full Synthetic Motor Oil. I want to change the transmission oil and have seen a couple of videos using Mobil 1 20W-50 Full Synthetic Motor Oil. Can I use it for the transmission oil even though it is an engine oil? Or should I go with what you use, which is Lucas MC synthetic 20W-50 motorcycle oil? It is a Sportster 1200 Forty-Eight 2017.

I like Lucas MC synthetic 20/50 but yes, the motor oil and primary, transmission oil all the same oil to use your primary and your transmission share the same oil on Sportster. Mr. Rocco, again thanks for your awsome videos. I have a bike just like yours, one of the screws that hold the primary cover the one above the primary drain (front) is leaking after a short drive. Should I just remove the screw and apply teflon tape? or loctide thread sealer? without draining the primary? I just follow your video and it was nice to follow. I even stop the leak on the primary drain plug by putting a new 0-ring and 2 turns of teflon tape but now I discover this? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

You have the right idea. Remove screw and tread seal. Take a good look at your oil drain pipe clamp. Let us know how it works out.

Happy to help. Take a 2 x 6 and put the kickstand on that. That could be helpful. 2 x 6 and that will help you to drain the primary and use the inspection cover to adjust your chain to put the oil in and you should have no problems you can do it on the kickstand, but it might get a little funny for you to get to the hardware. You're the only guy I've seen that refills the oil through the primary chain inspection hole. Everybody else (including the manual) says to remove the primary cover & fill to the bottom of the clutch spring.

take off the derby cover, fluid needs to be touching the bottom of the clutch basket. That is the proper way to make sure there is enough, eye ball it I suppose

I own a 08 XL1200N with 27000 mi, and use Valvoline VR1 60w racing oil, (three quarts in oil tank) and 75w90 gear oil in the primary. Quieter since I started using those weights. (My engine was very noisy with what sounded like a loud: tick-tick-tick, ping, ping ping, etc. and I'm very happy with tranny shifts with no missed shifts, and the reduced noise of a clunk, when innitially putting it in gear! Nightster 1200 runs smooth and quiet down here in South Alabama.

Hey Rocco, I ran into another situation with my sportster, would love to get your feedback. I changed oil and primary oil. The plug came out real easy but the plug had some threads from pan hole. I can screw the plug in by hand, but when it gets flush it just turns. Seems like the previous owner over torqued it and stripped it. Ordered the oversized plug with tap from JP cycle so I'm going to attempt to rethread it. Could I put a plug in the bike without the magnet tip? What's your opinion on a piggyback plug setup? Have you had success with rethreading? Any tips. Thanks so much.

Not that common. i believe the starter has a o ring seal... clean the area with brake cleaner. then use a little baby powder where you think the leak is. Then start bike and run. The powder will show a stain where leak starts.Than clean powder with water. Hope that helps..Let me know.

It has about 16 thousand miles,factory pipes and off brand intake that i got from ebay,that thing is I take the bike to a reputable mechanic for the 15 thousand miles thinking that would take care off the roughness and they didn't even notice it, I think they only did the oil change and nothing else, I personally don't trust any mechanics, I'm having a hard time finding a honest mechanic, I don't mind paying the price is just the trusting issue.

Primary chain lubricant and the transmission lubricant are the same...Same place fills both..Hope this helped.

@@TwoWheelRocco interesting, I bought primary fluid and transmission fluid, saw some videos where you take the clutch cover on off to change the tranny fluid.

@@uakawa That's your choice. This is a faster and easier way, you don't have to screw around with that derby cover unless you want to. Hopefully you're using 20/50 MC oil in that primary. 1 qt. is all it takes, This is an easy job. Thank you for watching have a great day let us know how it works out.

I have a sportster 2010 1200xl custom, my Harley dealer has been charging me over 100 bucks for all 3 oils as they call it, well after watching these vids it's really 2 holes! Is there a difference or is it just preference on which plate you take off the primary to fill it? Some videos I'm seeing that they take off the round plate, however you used the smaller rectangular opening.

It is easier...less screws... can be done with bike on kick stand.. No oil leaking from lower cover. ..and you can check your primary chain for adjustment..That how I see it..Hope that helps.Ride Safe and have a great day..Let me know what you think.
