Trans and Prim should be filled and checked with bike upright/level (dipstick dipped only,not screwed down) and Engine oil should be checked on the sidestand,dipstick screwed down (that is why it swivels).

aluminum foil was my secret trick early on in the superbike era....esp. around filters between transverse four cylinders. It is excellent you found it's use too. You have polished mechanical skills , a well done video and well focused close up's of the tools used. I am going to do my friends Switchback oil change this weekend and she will help now, you inspired her.

Clutch issues such as slipping gears due to low primary fluid levels over time, and probably more metal shavings in trans by keeping that low fluid level. There's a reason to stand the bike straight UP for the trans and primary levels, to properly lube the entire workings.

Best regard from Europe. you should fill your filter with oil once untill you almost spill over...hold it at 45 degreees...rotate it untill the paper filtering element absorbs the oil....than no oil spills when you install it horizotally.Adding oil prevents your bike from running dry the first 10-15 seconds after oil change.

The thinking behind pre-filling the filter is that there will be a brief moment where no oil is being pumped into the engine. As Harleys don't use pressure-lubricated bearings I can't see the point, nor a way to do it without spilling oil. There is also no load on the engine at this point and I have never seen evidence of not filling it causing a problem - oh, and the Official Harley Workshop and User Manuals don't mention it.

I think if you check your manual you will find a cold engine check should be dead center of the engine dip stick. Hot engine check should be full on the dip stick. This helps reduce oil puking out the throttle body on to the air cleaner. And the bike should upright when filling the primary.

I have a 06 DWG, bought her new, named her, "LC", for "Last Chance". Yes, there is a story behind why she's called, "LC". I must say your video on the 3-oil change is spot on. Your aluminum foil idea for the filter is a good one. Many years ago, when I performed my first oil change on this bike, I carved up an empty round plastic quart oil bottle and fashioned it into a drain ramp that slips in underneath the oil filter that allows the oil from the loosened filter to drain down into the catch pan. Been using that same piece of plastic for the past 16 years and haven't spilled a drop yet. I had an 89 Low Rider myself and an 89 Soft Tail Custom. Bought'em new 6 months apart. Those are two bikes I sold in 2017 that I really wish I had back. I've always liked the DYNA's. Sorry, I digress. Thanks for your video. Always nice to confirm what I'm doing is correct. PS: Please include your pooch in your videos. He or she looks like a sweetheart. And is that a Ural I see in the background of another video of yours"? Y'all hang in there.

My understanding is that Transmission dipstick measuring is done without screwing it in but just resting on top of filler hole. Also you did it but did not mention the tightening primary case bolts in a criss cross pattern. Also if it's your first time it's good to use a torque wrench with appropriate setting torque settings.
@glennstatham960

no need for the criss cross thing, it's merely a cover, not a primary case. torque settings on those screws are only to prevent heavy handed people from stripping or breaking them.

@howdiedoodie8587

There is plenty of oil still remaining on the internal parts. The engine will not be dry started unless that bike sits for days without oil. I have tried the add oil to the filter before and all you end up doing is wasting expensive oil. You pour it in the filter and spill it back out trying to install it. You can do it your way of course, but my engine will never be completely dry inside.

Because I hear it both ways and I’ve never noticed any difference in the machines I’ve worked on, same with other mechanics who have just as much (if not more) experience than you. Thanks! @@KillswitchQueen Sorry for no tech details. It was a quick comment reinforcing some other opinions. Wanting to have oil in the filter is not so much an opinion, more so factual. With a dry filter upon start up the engine is starved for lubrication. Sure, it's only a few seconds if you're lucky. Most people run a thick oil, 20/50. It's not light and doesn't flow quickly cold. It's hard for the pump to push it through and saturate dry media. The positive with thick oil It's easier for the pump to build forcing pressure and not be so affected with cavitation and mixing of air degrading lubricating properties. There's a billion technical pages of much more/better/in depth scientific analysis than what I'm laying down. It's a bigger deal on cars that may get 70 to 100 or more oil changes. Dry start difference in engine wear may mean the difference of getting 150,000 miles out of an engine versus 200,000. It's hard on timing chains, the oil pump, cylinder walls, cams, etc. Yeah, there's residual oil which is the saving grace to not scoring the internal parts. It's just not the best thing when it's so easily avoided. It's the US. Everybody is free to fu their own stuff almost any way they like. Can't figure out how to attach a picture of my dyna. Best of life 2u.

To fill or not to fill the filter. The general theory would be unfilled the bike runs a risk of a few milliseconds of non lubricated running. Whether or not thats enough to cause any noticeable damage is debatable. Although in my opinion that would only be applicable if you were doing an oil change on a stone cold engine thats been sitting for a bit. Filled or not wouldn't be a concern if you're doing the oil change 'traditionally' where the bike is run for a few minutes first before draining to disperse the sediment. In that case, everything would still have a layer of oil on it negating the lack of filter oil.
@KillswitchQueen

I think on a dry engine, I would splash some oil in there. Although you'd be coating internals with assembly oil/engine oil as you go. But I agree!

I'm a Honda Suzuki and Yamaha Certified mechanic. If you look in most manufacturers repair manuals there is a filter and non filter oil amount, because the filter holds x amount of oil by itself. On my bikes I always change the filter when I change the oil. You are supposed to dip your finger in oil and wipe it on me a ring of the filter to lubricate it so it will seal properly. I always add a little bit of oil in it to soak the filter. Have fun can't wait to see more riding videos

Where did you get your battery covers from, I got a set from eBay and the battery side is completely off measurements, no way it will fit. Did you have the same and have to modify it?

T wrenches are actually good to primary cover you can use some plastic and stick it under your oil filter and it will slide right out of your plastic that you shape into your oil pan you pre-load your oil filter for on a cold start that's why you preloaded it has no no oil in the filter prevent wear cold-start no oil shavings

instead of aluminium foil, i use a 1.25L coke bottle and carve it to size with scissors to fit under the oil filter, leave the cap on the bottle
