Just received these with TT DG's a few days back. 3 range sessions in and could not be happier. Coming from Mizuno these offer zero drop off in feel. They are amazingly consistent irons. Ben Hogan nailed it. I do not believe these should only be considered for budget players. These stack up with the best of them. Also fwiw, in USA they are using Club Champion for fittings before ordering. Great review of a great club!

Thanks for all the great videos. The tip about holding a 5i like and 7i to flight it down in the wind was absolutely gold. That's the next level of ball-striking I'm working on. Thank you for that...Yeah, three months ago, decided it was time to retire my Nike VR Pros and ordered a set of PTX Pros in black, S300 +2 degree upright. Have about 15 rounds in this far. I can honestly say the confidence I have gained playing the PTX Pros has taken my game to another level. They are butter when pureed and you get addicted to that feeling so they teach you how to hit them. I know what sounds weird, but that has been my experience. It took about 6 rounds to get the sweet spot dialed in. Now that I'm 15 rounds in...I'm absolutely blown away. Just pick a target that aligns with the flag and swing. Take the glove off because you're putting for bird. It's that simple. Best irons I've owned. Ben Hogan has a demo program also. Really would like to visit you guys for a fitting to make sure my specs are dialed in. Whenever the border opens I plan to do that.

For what it's worth, and for anyone reading this - I went to club champion and tested a number of cavity-backed players irons. Came down to the PTx Pros vs the P770s - PTx Pros had better distance control, better and more consistent spin numbers, and didn't get the occasional flyer off the face. P770s felt a bit better. Both went the same distance. Went with the Hogans for 750 as opposed to 1.2k+, plus they look WAY better.
@frankfrankly87642 жыл бұрын
I can no longer play my ptx pros. The offset is too much. I’ve switched to mp 33’s and see similar distances when I take in to account the degrees vs number on the club. I might give these a try with the demo program.
@frankfrankly87642 жыл бұрын
@@Redmarkviolinist I have the same story, did the demo program twice, s300 shafts 1st and the numbers weren’t great so I did the kbs. New a guy that worked at golf galaxy and he let me do a head to head against all the new stuff, srixon, 790, mizuno. Hogan’s came out on top in almost all metrics. Distance was almost as far and that’s before I knew about the 2 degree difference with other manufactures.

It goes without saying that Ian's ability to judge an iron is second to none; thus for him to speak so highly of Hogan Icon and the company is very pleasing to my ears.... especially that I own and play the Hogan irons (PTx version). Over the 2.5 years, I have owned my Hogan iron, I have had two fittings; my last fitting resulted in a different shaft that better suit my game in order to lessen my dispersion. Regardless of the iron, a shaft change is something us players need to address after a given time period; moreover, if you have made improvements to your swing. In the end, a very impressive and welcome review by TXG...where class and professionalism is at a whole new level that can be admired.

I had Apex Edge way back. I play Hogan PTx since a few years back. Love them. Have the wedges from 48 up to 54 degrees. LOOOVE the wedges and a cool feature is the grip where there are some marks of where to place your thumb for consistency! When I bought my irons - the markings of the club were only in loft. Then they removed that feature and had the number of the club stamped instead. It was a bit tricky to move from: I take my 7-iron to use my 33 degree. But, once I got used to it, it was no fuss. All clubs have four degrees between them. I play 29, 33, 37, 41 and 45 degrees PTx. I have 48, 51 and 54 for my wedges. I do have a Hogan -Hi club which is 24 degrees and here is some struggle concerning decision making. DO I go with a hybrid or do I go for that 4.5 Iron? It is a wonderful club when you really hit it right but a hybrid gives me the security. Personally, I would easily buy another set of Hogan. Yeah - it may be a bit tricky when it comes to ordering direct from Hogan instead of from a pro-shop but at the same time, these are buttersoft to amend lie- and loft angle.

You guys have perfectly captured why I recently switched from "game improvement" type irons to Mizuno MP-20s'. Props for doing an honest review of clubs you don't even carry! It's a timely review as well. I just sent back a demo set of Icons (6 and 9). I agree 100%, they are surprisingly good, and you do need to know your specs, or at least pretty close. They don't have a lot of resale, or trade in value either, another reason to be sure of what you want/need before buying. I'm probably going to go with 6-P Icons, 5 iron in PTX pro, and a 4 utility. I'm playing the Fort Worth 15 irons right now, and these feel better actually. I've ordered several clubs from Ben Hogan and they came in at exactly the requested specs. Pretty rare in my experience, coming from the factory.
@Disturbed71004 жыл бұрын
I love the modern Hogan irons, the PTx Pro and these Icon blades, they look so good! I'm off a 15, I have often thought about buying blades to practice and see how i go out on the course. My current irons (TM R7) have a quite a bit of offset and are very strongly lofted, and i tend to pull draw my irons these days and visually i find i'm just going to over do it with the draw. Any time i've tried a friends' blade they fly so much higher (traditional lofts) and straighter (not sure if this because of the lack of offset or i just find it it easier to return the face square) though, of course they punish you but you're also still in play. Landing approach shots into greens high and soft is the way to go! Great video guys and always good to see Ian hitting clubs!

I bought a set of these in the black finish in May. Some of my favorite irons ever, exactly what they were talking about in consistency but also consistent gap between clubs, I think mostly due to the exact 4 degree loft difference. I literally hit the 7i to my number about 8/10 times. I hit the 4i better than I thought I would and I hit a lot of em to make sure I can still find the sweet spot. My set was $500+ cheaper than Titleist which is my other favorite and I can't see myself ever paying that much for what I can get with Hogan's

The key takeaway for me being that both Matt and Ian deliver repeated, consistent swings which serves as a baseline for tinkering. Once us golfers accomplish that then fitting becomes imperative to fine tune our individual swings.

Just bought a second hand set of Callaway Apex 18MB because I saw a comments about them being very similar to my 1988 Redline Hogan Apexes which are gorgeous to play with. These look similar to the 1999s. Wish I’d got the Apexes instead of the Hogan Edges I used for years which were too forgiving and so not conducive to improvement. Something about standing over the blades which focuses you into a good swing.

I found this to be a great piece of insight into what can be gained from playing a blade in general. Would love to see you guys do some more videos on that type of overview of a type of club rather than a specific brand or brands. It would certainly allow me to make better informed decisions going forward when considering what I'm looking for for my specific game, especially as I didn't grow up playing golf and so though I've got down to 8 hcp quickly, I am having to simplify information to achieve a broad understanding and contextualise what I learn. When I was fitted my striking wouldn't be good every time so i got mizuno 919 hot metal but I will remember this for when my handicap continues to improve. Thanks guys. Hope this is some constructive feedback for future video ideas.

This hits so many good points. Shouldn't we all be trying to play precision golf? There's a threshold of speed for not needing faces that flex in irons, but the industry has been so enamored with distance, it's nice to see you bring up combinations of traditional clubs with spinnier balls. What's better? A nuclear 7 iron going 200 yds or be able to flight and shape different trajectories to get it closer to the pin?

Again, well done for reviewing clubs you don't sell. Personally, I just couldn't give up the fitting now.

They do try before you buy Jeremy! Better than a fitting although i do appreciate a set of figures helping me decide what's going to work for me. Mizuno Mp18mbs currently with pro modus 105 shaft. Half inch long standard lie. Midsize mcc plus 4 grips. Soon to be replaced with Cobra King cb/mb flow set in black, kbs tour taper shaft, standard lie but 1degree more upright as standard than mizuno , standard length since they are half inch longer as standard than mizuno and same grips!

chris sellings Sorry Chris I strongly disagree that a test club is better than a fitting, not even close in my book. It’s definitely a nice touch if you have been fitted but not instead of being fitted.

@@ianfrasergolf i suppose its whatever gives you the confidence in what you're using. I've been through several fittings and my conclusions come from what i see the ball doing ultimately. The last set of clubs i got to try before i buy, stayed in my bag for over 9 years. Callaway X forged 2007. Only replaced when age caught up on me and Project x rifle 6.5 shafts couldn't be flexed properly anymore. Same with my driver. Took 4 different clubs out on the course in 30mph wind and chose the one that i could hit straightest. Tour Burner Tp stayed until my M3 came along! Tried that before i bought it too! I've hit bombs with it for years. My Mizuno mp18 mbs with tour 105 shafts have served me for 2 and half years but they're now on their way out. In theory they should be good still but they're not gelling with me at all. I've given them long enough so Cobras are in and Mizunos are out. I got to try the Cobra cb/mbs out so hopefully I'll be comfortable with them for years to come. I liked what i saw. A blend of both fitting and try before you buy would be ideal but who does that?

I used to own Hogan Apex Redlines. Loved them. I currently own what I consider an amazing price deal-Pursuit M510 blades. It would be an interesting test since you seem to like muscle back blades. Keep up the great work

I have the Ft. Worth black irons from last year and did a combo set with the old Hogan Apex Edge Pro irons for my long irons. Of course Hogan then comes out with the option to buy a combo set. Oh well. Awesome video guys. Always love the content!

Glad to see these get a review ... Ben Hogan also offer a few combo sets with the Icons for short, PTX Pro in the longer irons with further options on the 4 iron. The previously Ft Worths are beautiful. I have seen the older PTx heads in club fitters kit bags so TXG may still be able to fit to them?

Such great looking and sounding irons. Performance wise, pretty much exactly what a blade should do. Super consistent, traditional loft. Swapping to that RB Tour X ball gave it such a perfect flight! Such a shame Australia doesn't the demo program, I'd be all over that!

That's dope! I thought I was the only person that asked for Ben Hogan reviews! I know I like their driver for sure😍

Played Callaway Apex Pro 16's for quite a few years. Good set but was looking to make a change. Decided to keep the 16's as my backup set and went with the Apex Pro 19's in smoke. Hit them well, but the feel I thought was way worse than the 16's. They were a tad longer sure, but the feel off the faces on the 7, 6, etc..were very clicky and I felt like they would jump on me, especially out of the rough and I had some distance control issues. I always loved the way my old Hogan Apex blades felt, but the sweet spot was the size of the tip of a tee and became a problem when you're not playing a few days a week. Love the look of the Icon's, but decided to check out the PTX Pro's for that little extra forgiveness. Love the way they feel all the way through the bag, and distance control seems consistent. The only bummer was I didn't like the shaft options from Hogan so I ended up swapping my Modus 120's from my Callaway's which cost a bit. Regardless of price, I think they are really nice and Hogan is still making a very quality product. Love watching your content guys, keep up the great work.

Very fine looking irons, I used to play Apex years ago, they were not too forgiving then...but did like them.

Really a great review. I was torn between the Hogan and the Wilson Staff blades. Ended up with Wilson so I could get fit, but the Hogan Icon's are beautiful.

Great video, really enjoyed it! I’m a 3.4 handicap at the moment, and I’ve thought about making the switch to a bladed set. I really love the consistency in the distances. This is definitely an option I may look at. Thanks guys!

I demoed these and they felt and looked very good and I’m a mid handicapper

Sub70 would be cool, they have a good vibe and attitude as a company. Also their ability to send you a demo set to see if you like them before purchase is a great idea for those who can't/won't get fit!

With how consistently Matt and Ian hit the green, would love to see them do a 14 club challenge like they do on the European Tour KZbin channel. Pick a par 3 on the simulator, 1 point for every ball you get on the green, once a club is used no one can use it again.

For me personally, one of the best things about the Hogan Icon offering is that it's a beautiful blade, yet with the option of so many shafts - True Temper, KBS and UST graphite shafts, right down to senior regular. Most manufacturers of blades only have super stiff shafts standard in them off the rack. So you need to spend lots of extra money to replace the shafts if you like the look of the club, yet don't have the swing speed anymore due to injury or age.
