Victorinox scissors really are excellent. They're the only multitool scissors I've come across that can 'glide' (whenever you're cutting paper with fine scissors you can just push forward and cut through, no thumb movement needed.) Thing is, they glide through ripstop nylon just as well as paper.

The Gerber multiplier has great scissors too, made by Fiskars. The only downside is that the jaws are too short for thicker or heavier cutting.

I acquired a Leatherman Micra this week. I was disappointed to see this video AFTER I bought a Micra. I did my own test, and I have to say that my results closely matched yours. All of my Victorinox scissors were much better than all of my Leatherman scissors ( I no longer own a Surge ). I went ahead and tested several Wenger scissors as well, and they faired about the same as the Leatherman scissors. I did notice that the scissors on my two older Charge Ti models were noticeably better than the scissors on my new Charge Plus.

Really good comprehensive review, thanks. One scissor performance test that shows a good contrast between LM & Vic scissors is when cutting with the scissor tips. Ha … for that “fine” work. I find the Vic scissors are far superior to my LMs across the board. It’s not like LM don’t know how to make scissors. Their Raptor has a super impressive set of shears. I wish they could translate more of that design DNA to their conventional edc multitools. Also the LM PST II scissors are actually really really good. IMHO, aside from a little more finicky to deploy, they cut miles better than Charge/Blast and Juice scissors. They’re a bit smaller than the Juice version but are more solid and comfortable.

I’ll be honest with you. I have never once used my PST II scissors. You have peaked my curiosity, I’m going to have to try them out now.

Great review. My Wave scissors are famous in my family for somehow handling tough jobs. After having seen your reviews, I'm absolutely looking forward to putting some Victorinox scissors to work. Also, I was inspired to sharpen my Style CS and Wave scissors and, while that helped them get better at paper, paracord cutting didn't improve by that much. Especially the Style CS, tends to roll with paracord. The Wave cut through paracord better after sharpening pretty well but it seemed to "snap" through and then lock in the closed position requiring me to open the blades manually. I think you're right about the tolerances involving the pin as well as the profile curve of the blades themselves. Excellent review and always great to know what makes something work better than others.

If I may flashback 30 years my Victorinox scissors always loosened at the pivot. The Wegner seemed to be better but were extremely hard to open. When I purchased the original Leatherman I was impressed by the pliers though they lacked the scissors. Years later when I purchased the Wave I was impressed with the scissors compared to the old Swiss tools. The Victorinox scissors may have improved since my experience but the Leatherman pliers blow Victorinox right out of the water. For my money the superior Leatherman pliers and acceptable scissors are the best option. I now purposely avoid Victorinox models with pliers. I have been contemplating carrying the Victorinox Rangergrip 179 and adding a Leatherman Raptor or possibly a small pair of Visegrips. I guess my logic explains why a retired man has a Weatherguard toolbox on his truck. I appreciate the time you have taken to keep us all up to date with options.

Let me say, I want to thank you very much for commenting. I can appreciate your many years of experience with multi tools and knives. I tend to agree with you on the plier of Leatherman tools vs Victorinox plier based tools. I greatly prefer the Leatherman pliers for multiple different reasons, with one exception. Victorinox pliers have a super smooth action, which I like very much. I do think your statement about superior pliers and acceptable scissors is spot on though. I completely agree with you. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch my videos. On a side note, Weatherguard makes some really excellent tool boxes. Though I don’t have a need for it, I really like their Pack Rat.

I know you are not discussing shear type scissors like in the Roxon & Nextool, but there are a few comments below about how great they are. But, when you try to cut stiff cardboard with these, as soon as the edge reaches the body of the multitool, the cardboard has nowhere to go, and impinges on the body. It is difficult to bend the cardboard down (or up) to continue cutting. This should be the test for scissors. Doing a snip on the edge tells nothing. And who uses scissors to cut paracord or rope? There's a knife blade for that. In my opinion, Victorinox scissors, with the exception of those in the Spirit X, are far superior to virtually every other brand's scissors. Good review, Dan. Keep up the good work.

the pin tension on my Surge weakened after some very moderate usage. same on my Squirt PS4. i solved the problem with a center punch. same on Squirt's pliers! overall my Surge was a Huge failure. a few more tools on it broken. i tried Skeletool CX, Gerber Dime then moved to SpiritTool Plus Ratchet. by far the best tool overall.
@thereyougoagain12803 ай бұрын
I really think that curve in the Victorinox scissor blades is exactly what gives them the advantage, and it makes a lot of sense why if you think about it. It really maximizes the direct cutting force against the material being cut despite the tiny blades. The only reason why the Surge scissors can compete is because they’re so much larger, which is why you don’t see that curve on full sized scissors, they don’t need it. Perhaps Victorinox has patented the curve, but if at all possible, Leatherman should really get on board with it. Victorinox does also have more precise manufacturing standards and uses better materials, though, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Some of the new Juice scissors actually have a type of serration to their edge profile. It’s good in some ways, but not my favorite. I like to be able to slide cut paper with my scissors, meaning, opening and closing a little to start the cut in paper, and then just pushing the tool forward and the paper is cut by the sharp wedge that’s formed in the joint of the two blades.
@txtoolcrib5 жыл бұрын

My issue with even good multi-tool scissors is the cutting edge length. Look at the Surge. The cutting edge of the scissors is tiny compared to that tool. Wave, SwissTool, whatever. There have been some designs that take scissors to the next level. In my opinion, scissors in multi-tools should be like in the Roxon Storm, Roxon KS, NexTool Flagship, Outu multi-tool (also branded Schrade, Coleman, Splitman). That is how big I want my multi-tool scissors to be. Even the cheap Outu has better scissors than many popular multi-tools of the big brands. But Victorinox scissors are truly amazing. The 91mm scissors are better than many dedicated scissors. The sharpness, the tolerances, the action, the comfort. They are flawless.

This is a great review. Waiting a video about my favorite tool in all multitools. By experience Leatherman scissors dulls pretty easily. I have a raptor and my rambler cuts way better. My skeletool CS is kind of crampling the paper as compared to sd classic and 91 mm. I can say wave and surge have good scissors and evo victorinox models are lower quality. But Swisstool X sizes scissors does the best. Victorinox scissors are way undervalued. I ignored them for long long time up until I started paying attention to my edc.

In my set of 39 Leatherman multitool and a few Victorinox. I don't sell or advertise multitools, so I can afford what I like, not what the ads impose. Any Leatherman, if you leave out false patriotism, is undoubtedly the best multitool in the world. Objectively, it is often let down by the build. But if your hands grow out of the right place, everything is easily corrected without much effort and special equipment. Leatherman is a working tool. This is not a toy. If it is used for its intended purpose, you can give a guarantee of more than 25 years. I don't have only Leatherman FREE. This is absolutely not my style. Leatherman Skeletool is a masterpiece of interaction between design engineers and marketers at Leatherman. It's not the best of Leatherman, but it's a MASTERPIECE of STEEL PRODUCTION !!!! From Victorinox, only Victorinox vine master stayed in my hands for a long time because of the excellent knife with a corkscrew and my passion for French and Italian wines. The remaining 11 Victorinox are in the box as part of the collection. Expressed his point of view. I have something to compare with because I can pick up any multitool at home and use it for its intended purpose. You always have a modified Leatherman Wawe +in your pocket. It has an s30v blade, a serreytor with a sling cutter, and a rebar awl instead of a large flat screwdriver. I wish all Leatherman fans and just good people good health and long life.

Just got my surge today and am very disappointed... my scissors can’t even cut through paracord... yours do great, but mine just mush it... I’m guessing I’m going to have to return mine... for a 200dollar Canadian tool, I expected much much better results.. all my liner locks tools have front and back play (the saw is the worst) if it was side to side, I could just tighten it, but it seems like they ground the tools down a little too much.. the scissors were one of the main selling points for me, as I use my MT scissors a lot... so the surge is a no go for me... kinda sad, because I got my wife the micra with the scissors, and they cut like butter.. I’m sure I could return it and get a replacement, but to me, leatherman has already lost their chance for my money... you can’t charge 3 times as much as the competition, and have huge QC issues like this...

Pairing Victorinox with a pliers based multitool is what I did. For example a Farmer or Hiker plus a Classic SD for saw, scissors, reamer and flatheads/openers, as well as tweezers, together with a SOG Microclip gives me a good toolset, with more substantial pliers than those on Squirts or Dimes which are too small to be of any use. Or if I don't want to carry a saw that day, Vic Climber with larger scissors plus SOG Microclip.I don't mind redundancy when it comes to blades. In the end I spend more than I would have done on just a Squirt or another keychain multitool like a Dime...but still each combo comes in less expensive than a Juice, which I can't find for less than £90 here in the UK, and tbh I don't really like the design of it anyway. The knife blade is designed to fit the handle, rather than the other way around.

Why does nobody ever test scissors on soft materials too? Like fabric or leather. I've seen some perform well on the generic paper/cardboard test but totally suck cutting fabric. Victorinox scissors are superior bc they took the best scissors in existence, the large silver fabric scissors that are always used as a murder weapon in movies lol, and they shrunk em down. Gerber uses Fiscars so theirs perform pretty well. But Leatherman made their scissors based on what they thought scissors are supposed to look like without any actual engineering.

I’ll try to remember that for future tests on scissors.

Leatherman are my favourite brand, followed closely by Victorinox. I've recently purchased a Squirt PS4 and the scissors are absolute rubbish, they struggle badly to cut paracord and string, among other things. The same size victorinox scissors are awesome. Why can't leatherman make their scissors like that. The scissors on a multi-tool are one of the most important items to me, and i only have multi-tools that include scissors. The PS4 might as well not have any because they don't work. It's a big let down from leatherman considering they are the world's leading brand. And a big let down for me because i so much wanted to like the PS4 as it's a perfect keyring size and it goes everywhere with me.
@txtoolcrib4 жыл бұрын
I wish I had the answers for you. I agree that Victorinox makes better scissors, don't even think it can be debated.
@simonh63714 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info, I was considering getting a Squirt PS4 but in the end I decided against it, the pliers are just too small to be of any use for me, I need them for bike repairs on the road including changing wheels if an innertube bursts and needs changing, and the nuts are too big for the Squirt, Dime or any keychain multitool for that matter. Plus the Squirt is £40 ($50) here in the UK if you get lucky, normally it's more. So for the same money I got a SOG Microclip which is a bit bigger, more the size of a Juice, but a fraction of the price (they fetch more than $100 here!) plus a Victorinox Classic for scissors and tweezers, also the blade on that is fine for opening packages, and the blade on the SOG is 2 inches and good for bigger jobs...together they cost me £40. I also carry a larger SAK such as Farmer or Hiker so I have a saw, reamer and bigger blades to work with. Okay that 3-piece EDC combo does cost more than the Squirt and much more than a Gerber Dime but it's a much bigger better toolset. Getting a SAK Climber which has bigger scissors and will rotate and carry that with the SOG, and leave the Classic & Farmer/Hiker at home, if I don't want to carry a saw.

S2 can get a decent edge on a worksharp if you angle it right, I’ve had an S2 for 8 years now and was never impressed with the scissors, worse they shortened the blade length too. Still pretty much lower grade overall in comparison with Victorinox scissors. SOG multitool scissors are garbage, replaced scissors on power lock with plain edge and a serrated edge, getting rid of the scissors and combination blade altogether.

I need to look at the Worksharp.

Only done on the juice series multitool as you can open them up fully

In my experience victorinox scissors are far superior than leatherman scissors. My leatherman surge scissors used to cut paracord, but after a cut or two the scissors were too loose, and just fold over. I like leatherman's saws better. I do not like victorinox's both way design, it seems to hang up a lot more than a pull saw.

I am fucking your waifu and there's nothing you can do about it I haven’t experienced that issue with the Surge. I will admit that I don’t use my scissors very often, so that may be why I have never had any issues.

When he said that he was gonna compare scissors from 2 great companies I couldn’t agree more. Victorinox has been in the game a long time and so has leatherman. However I like leatherman better but still love and respect victorinox! 👌🏻👌🏻

I really don't see the point of having scissors on a knife if it's sharp.
@txtoolcrib4 жыл бұрын
Cutting templates would be one example. Often time cutting through tightened up zip ties is not that effective with a knife as well. There are so many instances where scissors will offer more cutting control than a blade. To each their own though.

I asked this question to a knife collector friend. His answer shut me up - try trimming your moustache with anything but scissors.

2 sec in and I know the the sak wins. After watching video biggest disappointment has to be leatherman micra. Scissors based multitool but the scissors are crap.

Victorinox are the king of scissors...except those on the Spirit. The Spirit scissors are an abomination. They should have used standard Vic scissors in the Spirit. Other than the scissors the Spirit is the most ergonomic and pocketable multitool out there.

manufacturers should stop trying to be creative to design a whole bunch of inferior experimental sissors and stick with the best design LOL

This is a pointless video- every one of those scissors will cut 550 cord, unsupported, in one pass... with minimal sharpening;)
