@@txtoolcrib I gave you a thumbs up. I was very impressed with your work and paying you a compliment. Those older experts in the mill could fab up wonderful stuff! It brought back some great memories. I was a Millwright Apprentice and completed 2.5 years before the layoffs in the early 1980s. I ended up joining the Navy before the second round of layoffs. When I got out, I called in for reinstatement and they said of course, but you're still in layoff status.... I decided to stay in California and get my Masters. I'm now more of a tinkerer with a bunch of metal and woodworking machines in my small shop. I have access to all kinds of tooling at work

Hello, Ben - excellent video - you certainly display your considerable knowledge and skill as millwright and welder in this project - not to mention the steadiest pair of hands I've ever seen - I like your use of the hammer while welding - did you use a lubricant prior to drilling? Also, will this be a portable or stationary unit? I can say that this video is a fine example of fabrication at its best...Outstanding!

Thank you very much! I used a wax lubricant on the annular bits. This vise stand is meant for my shop that will be built in the next couple of weeks. So it is meant to be semi-permanent, so that I can position it in different places within the shop. Later I may mount this vise to a table, I haven't decided just yet.

What a great build video! You're an artist with that torch. And, of course, it wouldn't have been a proper TS Tool Crib video without the cameo appearance of the Leatherman Surge on your hip. [Grammarly suggested I meant 'surgeon' instead of 'Surge on', which would also be descriptive of your skill with that torch.😄] Contrary to the title of the vid, that vise stand was a-buildin' rather than wiltin'.

It's been a couple of years. How do you like your stand so far? How is its stability? Anything you would do different? With that size of vise, it seems like there could be some issues with stability. I just got a 6.5" vise and am thinking I need a concrete slab if I want a pedestal stand. I could be wrong of course. Beautiful work by the way.
