That magnifying glass has enable me, at 72 years old, to be able to use those Tweezers to actually see that SPLINTER in my finger, LOL...I have no idea how many full days I've spent working with a Splinter, be it metal, or wood in my finger or hand. because I had no way to extract it, or see it clearly. I would not trade the Tweezers, Magnifying glass, and needle, for any other tools on the Champ. As you say, there is a Scenario for every tool on that knife, that could make it valuable, even with a stretch of the imagination, but, It Could happen, lol. I've even used the pliers for something as simple as making a loop on a piece of wire. Simple as folding a piece of doubled wire in the jaws and twisting the free end, as I've also done on the parcel hook.... I LOVE the Champ, it is with me everyday, right along side of my Leatherman Wave+. Nice Review, Thank you....

I love the swiss champ and I have a leatherman surge and many other multi-tools, but it has its place in the world of knives. Those pliers are awesome for fixing jewelry and other small tasks. Plus they are so precise that you can use the tip of the pliers to pull things out. Also remember the pen is pressurized so it writes on many different surfaces that other pens can't. Just my humble opinion. I am one who thinks each items has a place that makes each one stand out.

I started with SAKs, cycled through all the Leatherman series of multitools, and now I am back to the Swiss Champ. It has all the things I need on a daily basis, and I use pretty much every tool, including the fish scaler (I don't fish) and multipurpose hook, on at least a weekly basis. The fish scaler can be ground into a serrated blade, which, combined with its curvature, makes it excellent for cutting rope. Those pliers have surprised me at times when I thought they wouldn't be strong enough or big enough but did the job all the same. I don't like carrying anything in my pocket bigger than one of the thinner 58mm series like the Classic, so my Champ sits in a belt loop pouch, and I hardly notice it's there. As a Swisschamp user i would like to point out a couple of things. The metal saw is for "soft metals" only, so stuff like cans and Aluminum. if you try to cut steel or iron you will ruin the tool. The Pliers also have a cap crimper on the handle, it is listed in the instruction manual with the knife. The bottle opener is not only a wire bender but also a wire stripper, you cannot feel it but it has a very fine edge made to strip wires. The package carrier is useful if you use plastic bags when groceries shopping because (especially in Europe) those bags have really thin handles that can dig and cut your fingers. The flathead screwdriver on the back is made specifically for tight spots such as those plastic components with screws made for electrical wiring (sorry i don't know the name in English)

True what you said about it being a bit chunky, but the belt sheath that I ordered is very nice quality and makes it very convenient to carry. There’s even enough extra room for a small flashlight and a fire starter. . Plus it looks nice. I think some of the appeal is the nostalgia of being a Boy Scout. I’m 62 years old now and I still have lots of fond memories. I typically carry my Leatherman but there’s times when it feels good to get out my Swiss Army knife. I think I’ll buy one for each of my grandsons.

@@name5949 I've seen a lot of your posts on these videos, so I know your sak journey has been similar to mine. Started with the fieldmaster, picked up the farmer x, and thought I could go no larger than 4 layers. Then I found a well priced swisschamp on ebay and immediately rethought things. I have found a use for every tool on here, and don't like not having them with me now. If you have this on a belt sheath you're not gonna notice it. It can also fit my fifth pocket, and I've comfortably carried it in my front pocket with a suspension clip as well. You get used to the size of it pretty quickly, and it is now my edc.

The Victorinox pliers are just very precise & easy to manipulate tweezers on steroids (BTW, same width as the regular tweezers). If you look at them in that light, they are pretty awesome.

The pliers on this tool has real power, as a fine grip, finger extension. It is not the corollary of a multitool, which is pliers-based. Victorinox pocket knives are one thing, and multitools another altogether. I have a collection of about 40 multitools, and about 60 Victorinox knife models. Pliers-based, versus pocket knife-based. The SwissChamp is a work table model for me. It is is fun, and we like the feel. BTW the steel varies from tool to tool. It is not softer than on multitools. On some, yes. Others, no. The "pen" knife is the small blade. The big blade is a spear point. Lots of multitools can't cut coat hangers. The file is a wood/metal file. No fingernail file. I have both an older, and the newer liner lock version of the big brother WorkChamp. Love the big locking flathead/pry bar. Not being critical as in unfriendly. Just mentioning. I take your point. I think subconsciously I tend to compare multi tools/knives to the Wave and Surge quite often. Hence the bit softer steel and ability to cut through hard wire. I like the Champ, it is just no longer a viable tool for me now. That being said, it may work quite well for others. Thanks for clarifying some of the terminology. I appreciate you taking the time to watch my video.

Actually the steel used on multi tools is harder than victorinox models.

@@grizzlycountry1030 Yes, harder on some multitools. Lots of seemingly decent brands with very bad steel. However, a pocket knife isn't completely comparable to a pliers centred multitool. The Leatherman Charge Tti with the better blade steel is obviously superior. But my 22 year old Swiss Tool pliers has worn better than my 22 year old Wave pliers. The Swiss Tool is tight still, and not too dinged up. The Wave is floppy and the plier teeth chewed. Look some other brand models, Gerber models and SOG are clearly lesser steel in some instances. Model dependent. Small arm tools in Leatherman and Victorinox are much better in steel than my Gerber and SOGs. As said, a multitool and a pocket knife are just different. I pair my Charge with a medium sized 91 mm Victorinox, or a Pioneer, as there is no awl on the Charge. Or a Vic Huntsman and a Skeletool CX.

I carry a Victorinox Swisschamp, Leatherman Wave + and an altoids tin with supplementary items in the SAME front right pocket EVERYDAY, it can be done. If you're willing to tolerate some extra weight and bulk for a substantial amount of everyday capability youll find you grow accustomed to it extremely quickly. I genuinely dont notice the weight or bulk anymore. You have pockets, use them.

Great rollout of videos this week! Always enjoy your content. I still carry mine, and found that dangling the keyring from a deep pocket clip helps to keep the profile to a minimum in the pocket. But from writings, to cutting, to backpacking, it really packs a very versatile tool set in a compact, albeit chunky, package. One thing i particularity like on the Swisschamp saw is the blade design. The cutting edge is slightly thicker than the noncutting edge, so that as you saw through the blade doesnt get stuck. Really well thought out

Thanks, I appreciate you watching. I EDC’d mine for about 5 years. That is about the time I bought my first Wave. It doesn’t work for me today because I rely on a full set of pliers. It’s just as good today though as it was back then. A lot of functionality that you get with the Swiss champ.

I avoided the Champ for a long time because of size and weight. I carried either the Deluxe Tinker and/or the Evolution 23 instead. I finally broke down and got the Champ and I love the crap out of it. With s short clip attached to the key ting the knife hangs from my pocket and I don't notice the weight at all. It does limit what else fits in that pocket though. I know a lot of people find some of the tools useless but I believe they are wrong. Sure, you're not going to break rusted 1" bolts loose with the pliers. But they have many other uses. On a somewhat regular basis I wrap a ranger band around the handles and use them for a small clamp, for instance. The only issue I have with the tool is not getting it 30 years ago. But that's just me. I can see where others may have issues with it but none of the tools are useless.

The SwissChamp was my first real edc tool also but it is an older version so lacks the "package hook" and pin in the scale. My scissors have a screw pivot i.e. not riveted.

I appreciate the review. I wrestled with the width consideration also on this model, but then discovered the Victorinox Belt Hanger / Belt Clip, which enables the SAK Champ tool to be kept in my pocket hanging off my belt on the side, with the SAK suspended in my pocket so I don't really feel the weight and the 1.5 inch width or bulk that way doesn't bother me, works out well and I like the conceal of it/ vs the belt pouch. I figured with this belt clip working, I can deal with the extra layer or two, since I'm bothering to carry a SAK, may as well have more of the tools available the Champ offers, especially when out/ in a car or doing stuff outside, hiking, fishing etc. One can also always specialize and buy several SAKs for specific things too of course if smaller SAKs are a must, the SAK Champ overall I think is a good deal. I think something like the Leatherman and the others with the bigger pliers seems more suited to kind of a different group of people, like maybe tradesman on the job type work. Plus SAK has kind of a dedicated community following and there really is alot of good ideas put out there on creative uses for your SAK, which is kind of fun to explore... Thanks

I have had/used 4 of these since 1989, and is still a must carry on hikes, camping, and anyplace I feel "out of town" As you said there are a lot of useless tools over 30 years of using it, I only use 1/2 the tools/features. My favorite tools on this knife are the blades (of course) the saw, the magnifying glass, all of the mini tools, phillips screwdriver, can opener/bottle opener and of course the scissors. If you got the one with the leather sheath you also get a few more things like a compass, signal mirror Ect.

My Grandpa gave me a Victorinox when I was 8 years old in 1958. I have carried one as an EDC ever since then. I now carry the Handyman. It is the knife you said you would like to have. It is a five-layer SAK without the fish scaler, magnifying glass, and pen. You would lose the Phillips Head. It does have the plyers that work great if you are working with small electrical wiring. There are crimpers between the two handles. Don't work very good but they are there if you need them. I am a woodworker and if you turn the chisel over and use it correctly it is on the outside of the knife. The way you had it It would dig down into the wood and not shave it.

This is a cute little novelty multi-tool knife in 2022. I would definitely recommend a Leatherman Wave+ or Surge over this little Swiss Champ, though. Way more practical by today’s standards.

Lol not a novelty at all. It's much more practical than the Leatherman Squirt, which it is comparible too in terms of carry (5th pocket) and price (more or less the same). I'd recommend a Victorinox Spirit or Swisstool over the Wave and Surge as I don't live in the Mohave desert and if there's a hint of humidity where you live, your Leatherman will have serious rust problems. For me it's a 5th pocket carry to supplement my Spyderco and Knipex Cobra XS, all of which gives me far more capability than a tool assembled in junky city (Portland) from Mexican components.

Hey Ben great video as always. Just picked up the SwissChamp as a birthday gift and really looking forward to carrying it and putting it through it's paces. I'm not a kid 😅 I'm 63 but I was excited when I got it. I've collected and used Victorinox SAKs, Leatherman and Gerber products all my life and have a nice little collection of them just never got a SAK with as many layers as this one. But I found a nice belt sheath from a leather manufacturer called Hide and Drink (I know, but check them out 😂) that allows you to carry the SwissChamp horizontally so it carrys well. Anyway great review see you on the next one.

Neat review as always! I prefer the Cybertool L/41 as it does away with the tools I do not need like fishscaler and magnifying glass and adds a very capable screwdriver and bitholder. My dad is a technician for machines that put letters in envelopes in the thousands and he heavily uses the Cybertool. He says it offers exactly the functionality he needs in many cases without having to go for his extensive toolbox. He uses it for like 8 years nearly daily now and it is really battered. He wouldn´t let me send it to service for bringing it up to par again as it mostly still works fine and as he says he needs it too much. ^^ So looks like I´ll need to lend him mine in the meantime. You should check that one out as wel if you haven´t already.

My best edc Vic would be the Climber with: inline awl (from alox) instead of the pen knife (could be done with some skilled hands) 1/2 Phillips (from Tinker) instead of the 90° awl (some grinding needed and probably custom scales) Ofc, plus scales with eyeglasses screwdriver. For some people, maybe a version with electrician's blade instead of the can opener.

Thanks for the great video. I have the older one inch thick Victorinox SAK modal that they stop making called the Champion Plus 🔪 and it has everything the 1.3 inch thick Swiss Champ has but no pliers. I think one inch is still a pocket and hand friendly size to EDC. I do like the pliers a lot and carry a one inch thick SAK CyberTool 34 EDC as then I can also get the bit driver too. Carrying then both in opposite pockets hanging 1/2 way down by lanyards and they are hardly noticed. I like having all the tool all the time & with the extra blades I am able to use two and then have the other 2 blades stay very sharp for when that's needed. I also carry the Leatherman Rebar cross carry on my belt and like to use the pliers for heavy use and the pliers on the SAK for lighter duty tasks. Being spring loaded is great when you need it. I find it useful to use two pliers together pulling some thing from to different direction. I find uses for my SAK everyday and if I had to choose, lucky I do not, between carrying the two SAK or the Rebar I would pick the SAK's. & I always like having the magnifying glass as I do not always carry my reading glasses. And having a pen at all times is very handy too.

Hmmm honestly I love all my Victorinox including 91mm models and I'm actually watching this because I am contemplating buying one of these...but the awl/reamer on the 93mm alox models i.e. Pioneer, Farmer and Pioneer X/Farmer X is inline and is really heavy duty, I find it better than these on the backtools. But yeah I have a Rebar too and I know what you mean. I don't have any other full size Leathermans as I can't really EDC them due to locking blades (I'm inthe UK) but I think the Rebar was a good solid choice.

Great video thanks. The Swiss Champ looks awesome but for me it is just to small. That's why I EDC the Swiss Champ XLT SAK on my belt. I like to have all the tools SAK has to offer. I do also EDC the Handyman SAK that I keep hanging off my belt by a lanyard into my pocket. It is for a second set of plyers to use together with the Swiss Champ XLT plyers. Great together tying paracord knots real tight. And if and or when the Swiss Champ XLT is to big the Handyman can take over. I also keep a Leatherman Rebar in my backpack for heavier duty work. Plus my SAK'S Skipper and Ranger Grip 79 if I have a need for those tools that the Swiss Champ XLT may not have. And the SAK Harvester that has the coveted in line reamer punch. Love me some SAK's and lot of other great EDC stuff. 🔪 🔧 🔦 🔥 🏕

I just got the SwissChamp for my Bday last Sunday! It is my Victorinox no. 23 but it is the jewel of my set! My first SAK was the Champion. Back then, it was the largest available (until the Swiss-Champ was introduced). Back then I wore jeans mostly, and I kept it in the little watch pocket. I moved up to the Swiss-Champ when I went off to college and gave my Champion away. From college until present, I've always used a backpack, so I keep the Swiss-Champ in there as my EDC knife.

fish de-scaler carves pumpkins really well. the tip also works nicely as a picnic fork. the 2 prongs work like a fruit fork...or seafood fork...or for forking cut cheese or meat.

The SwissChamp is the only Victorinox I'm probably willing to carry. I especially like the hook, which i find really useful and irreplaceable by any other tool normally available in multitools. I'm used to carrying my beloved Leatherman Rebar on my keys, and unlike Victorinox toys, it's the real multitool that get tons of work done. On the other hand, i find this SwissChamp somewhat more practical for EDC and everyday light duty work. I'll consider buying it.

Hey man, great video on one of my favorite Victorinox knives. Sounds like you need a Ranger with a plus scale on the back. It's got the wood saw, file, scissors, all the drivers (minus the 3d Phillips, but the can opener has a VERY versatile driver that works with most Phillips), all five tools across the back, and yes, it IS a five layer knife, but that fifth layer is a very thin one. The Ranger is actually thinner than some four layer Victorinox knives. BTW, I pocket carry the Swiss Champ all the time. With a suspension clip, it hangs vertically, all the way in the back of the front pocket, and I forget it's even there! Thanks again, great video!

I think the magnifying glass is cool enough to keep. As a kid I used to be interested in insects and a magnifying glass is one of those things not practical to carry every day but when you need it you cant find one. I was looking into a handyman or a ranger but they dont have plus scales and mini screwdriver. I dont carry a pen bc anytime I carried a pen in my pocket it would leak or if someone would borrow one I wouldnt get it back. Having the plus scales means O always have a pen on me.The magnifying glass complements the tweezers and the mini screw driver perfectly. Being a dad I need an inline phillips to replace batteries on my child's toys. The champ allows me to have a basic screw driver set at all times. I dont do electrical work so the basic pliers are good enough for art projects(making xmas wreaths eg) and if that is not enough I can grab my gerber.

I paint the plastic tips of the scale tools with glow in the park neon paint. Now I can identify each tool by its color (neon green, orange, and yellow), and the tools/knife now glows in the dark, and the tools can act as markers in the woods.

Hi Ben, I can totally identify with you as a 12 year old thinking that the Swiss Army Champ was a "Must have" because I was the same 12 year old, thinking the exact same thoughts about the one I saw in our local camping store. The major difference is that I purchased my first Swiss Champ today (12/8/2021) exactly 56 years after I first saw and wanted one! lol So why did a 68 year old guy buy a Swiss Champ? Probably because it was so identified as 'The Swiss Army Knife" with all those features....and probably because I never got over thinking that they were so cool when I first saw one...and probably because they are considered to be of such a high standard (I collect watches and the Victorinox watch I have is a high precision instrument and a fine example of Swiss workmanship) and lastly...probably because I am at an age where I can think "Man I always wanted one of those..so I am gonna get me one"! lol And Ben, the magnifying glass is sure as eggs gonna come in handy! Swiss Champ, Cybertool L, Cybertool M, and Huntsman in the pocket or drawer. With all SAKs, you can use the hook to stand your SC pointing up at a 45 degree angle, open the cap lifter to the 90 degree position, fully open the cap opener, then place your phone horizontally between the CLifter and COpener, and close the can opener to hold your phone. Hands free phone holder while eating or sitting at a desk. :)

Seems like a lot of steps. I tried it, but my phone doesn’t seem to fit well. I just stood the SAK on it’s side, worked fine. My case keeps the phone from slipping.

I agree about the pliers. I have them on my Cybertool, hence the reason I believe they are more suited to electronics tasks (dues to their size and the wire cutters, which are probably better for small electrical wire cutting, anyway) than anything "heavy Duty" (I have my Leatherman Wave for that).

Thank you for that. I actually just ordered the Evo Grip 18. That one appealed to me. I ordered the 18 instead of the S18 because I didn’t really care for the blade lock mechanism. I also have never used the Wenger style scissors, so I am very anxious to try those out. I think a 4 layer is probably the widest Victorinox I would personally feel comfortable carrying.

Hey Ben, think of the pliers as large tweezers and it works.. like you I have quite a few Victorinox and leatherman models but these pliers have been at times the only thing that’s got ticks and spines off of my dog! Not so much with the Swiss champ because of its bulk but the deluxe the tinker is the perfect size for it! Cheers

I could see that. I think that the Gerber dime actually makes a very nice set of tweezers out of the pliers. I like those particular pliers because they come down to a very short point for that sort of task.

Yeah damn if they made a Huntsman Lite with a file - or basically a Ranger with an inline Phillips and light or magnifying glass the other side of it, don't mind which, that would be a perfect setup to carry together with a Knipex Cobra XS pliers. Or even better that toolset in alox.

Like you many people say it's very bulky and can only be carried in a pouch. Yet other commenters in other vids say they carry full size Leathermans in their coin pocket! Myself I can fit this in my coin pocket no problem, although it doesn't really leave room to add a lighter or torch. I'm not a big guy and wear slim fit (not skinny) European jeans and it fits no problem. I've actually bought it to carry in combination with a folder and a pair of Knipex Cobra XS, as I'd experimented with adding small SAKs for the scissors to that combo, plus at one stage a pocket folding bit driver which was pretty much the same size as the Swisschamp! So now it earns it place just because of the 5 drivers - okay 2 are tiny but the inline Phillips is brilliant - and scissors, not to mention all the other tools I get, including a woodsaw better than on most Leathermans, a file/hacksaw which seems very good, a pair of precision pliers for lighter/tighter jobs, and a whole bunch of other cutting, prodding, poking, scraping, and pulling implements as well as a pen. Here's the thing as well, it only cost me £7 ($10) more than a Leatherman Squirt PS4 and every tool it has that the Squirt has, is far superior, including the pliers because they have longer reach and you can get more leverage if you pull vertically (don't ever twist with any multitool pliers), plus you get a whole bunch of other tools which you don't get on the Squirt. If you consider the Swisschamp as an equivalent to the LM Squirt then you'll understand how good it is. If you want to compare a Victorinox product to a Leatherman Wave or Surge this ain't it, compare the Spirit and Swisstool, and I know which manufacturer is winning that comparison too.

Yep, it fits comfortably in the 5th pocket of most of my jeans, with a little lanyard attached to the key ring so it can be pulled out easily.

I think the chisel is intended to be used with the flat side on the opposite side of the wood surface. So it is well positioned. Not very useful, a bit small. Anyways I love the swiss champ, it is always in my backpack and I use it many times.

I don't agree with you, I have several multitools from leatherman,sog ,gerber etc. As well victorinox, I carry a Swiss champ every day, The only thing missing from a leatherman are the big pliers and happens that I use more the magnifier glass, tweezers, corkscrew, pen, toothpick, and pin combined than the pliers, I carry the tool in a sheath and not a problem I carry as well a leatherman wave sometimes.

Swisschamp combined with Knipex Cobra XS is great, those are some serious heavy duty pliers despite their size, 100x stronger than any folding multitool pliers which are only as strong as the pivots connecting the pliers head to the handles. There are videos of big guys standing on the handles of Knipex, which are locked onto a bolt partway up a wall, they don't even move. Put a Leatherman on the ground with the pliers open and stand on the handle facing upwards, and you'll break them.

I carry it together with a folder, not because I think the blade is weeny (it's the same as on the Rebar honestly) but because it's a bit cumbersome for extended cutting, and it's way off centre. I do use the small blade a lot for opening packaging. Supplement those with a Knipex Cobra pliers for serious twisting and pulling which would destroy a Leatherman, plus it works as a great wrench on nuts and bolts.

@@simonh6371 I'm too paranoid about snapping the small blade on packages. Its a little awkward, but to cut brown tape seams on boxes I always use the can opener or awl. For plastic clamshells I use my Dime package tool, it does a good job 👍 Knipex are AWESOME, but very rare & expensive here, I've just got a tiny pair of no name vice grips.

@@edwardfletcher7790 I'm guessing you're in the US, here we can get Knipex Cobra XS for £23, around $28. The Knipex XS Plier wrench though is a bit pricier, I think the lowest price for that I saw is £37 or $46 but that is a marvel of engineering, the way the jaws stay parallel. It's more specifically designed not to damage nuts and bolts as it doesn't have teeth like the Cobra XS, but I've never had any issues with that as it's not for super heavy duty on vehicles or machinery. But on the other hand we pay at least 50% more for US branded multitools, even ones made in the far east i.e. Gerber, SOG. A LM Squirt if you can still get one is £50 = $62, the Gerber Dime costs £28 or $35, in the US I've heard people pick them up in stores for $15. Here in the UK it's extremely rare to see multitools in a store, we buy them online mostly. Breaking the small blade on SAKs never crossed my mind to be honest! The thing is so slicey and sharp due to blade grind plus it's relatively thick in relation to it's short length if you think about it, I always considered it pretty strong and on all my SAKs it breezes through cardboard, let alone tape or blister packs.

I'd like to see a *"Survivor"* model: Wood saw, metal saw, scissors, awl, straight edge blade, *serrated* small blade, tiny signaling mirror (with hole in the middle) LED light (with multi-color ability - red for night vision preservation, as one example), compass, digital clock (plus other features in it, like altometer, stopwatch, alarm, thermometer, etc.), whistle, thin case to hold fish hooks, line, sinker, sewing needle + thread, etc. Adopt the Firefly ferro rod (by Tortoise Gear) in the toothpick hole, and/or FireAnt + tinder inside the corkscrew. Glass breaker. Make another spot to fit a blade sharpener diamond rod, the same shape as the Tortoise Gear ferro rod. Magnifying glass (yes, to start fire as well). Make color options: OD green (on the tools as well), green/brown camo, all blacked out, or glow in the dark yellow and/or orange If they could somehow switch the current pliers out for *vise grip pliers,* that'd be great. :)

Bloody hell that's a lot. The clock and light wouldn't be much use if you got it wet. Years ago Victorinox sold this in a pouch with other survival items like a small compass and fishing kit. Personally I prefer alox models like Farmer/Farmer X, or 111mm models like Soldier/Trekker for survival. Normally though I have a fixed blade on me too in the outdoors.

@@OutsideTheTargetDemographic If you try to tighten a bolt with Leatherman or in fact any needlenose/bluntnose pliers you'll find the radial force of trying to turn it forces the handles open and you'll just loosen the grip and it will slip. The Crunch is the only multitool which can deal with nuts and bolts effectively. Hence many people are now carrying Knipex Cobra in whatever size suits them. They are forged and intrinsically stronger than any multitool pliers which are only ever as strong as the pivot connecting the plier head to the handles.
