I've got a question!! Is it safe for the mule to start them under saddle at just 2yrs old? I had read somewhere that you have to wait until they're closer to 4yrs old because their growth plates don't close as early as a horse. I'm asking because we are getting a 6 month old solid white baby mule. We are supposed to be bringing him home next week. Im going to be training him myself, start to finish and i want to make sure I don't do anything wrong to mess him up! I'd LOVE to be able to start him under saddle earlier as long as its safe for him!!🤩💖

It’s a debate among equine folks about what’s a good age to put weight on an equine. Personally for me, I don’t want to put weight on an equine until they are about 4-6 years. Yes it can damage their growth plates but the big concern is permentangly warping the skeletal structure. This is how you get those swayback equines. Too much weight or weight too early in their lifetime. You can prep your equine with everything, putting a saddle on them etc before that age, just refrain from riding or putting weight on them if you really want to be mindful of their spinal structure. In the end, it is your choice to make. And what you think is the best

Love your philosophy and that’s how I train my horses, I’m no bronc rider and I don’t plan to be, if that horse bucks even the first time get on than I haven’t done my job.

I’ve read gated mules which are due May and June. I don’t think mine will be at that size by two. I will think I will have to wait till three possibly

Ty , Your work & philosophy on mules is really exemplary, unlike some of the harsher methods on “tube”, I have had horses for 60 years ,& this method works perfectly, am now keen on getting a mule, and use the same philosophy. I realise from your vids, that mules need more “ dwell” time to process & analyse the requests. One thing I need clarification on,-- you can stop a horse from bolting by disengaging the hindquarters ( if you’re quick enough), But another “ expert” on “tube” says a mule can go just as fast with his head flexed,?? does it NOT disengage a mule ?? Great work & presentation, keep it up. From Western Australia 👍👍

John Burns many people misunderstand the “one rein stop” ir as Ty calls it, the lateral stop. there is more to it than just pulling their head to one side, actually disengaging their hinds and shutting down the motor is key. We practice these things when things are good so that when things go bad, it’s almost muscle memory and very familiar to you and the mule so you can redirect their worried or anxious thoughts. We don’t do anything different with horses or mules, our methods apply the same to both.

Hi I am a novice new mule owner of a sweet beautifully pushy minded mule. She is my First equine ever. I am so novice I didn't know how to put a bridal on her...thank the Lord she is a patient friend. I just found out how to do that but haven't tried it yet. I just learned how to put a halter on her...mainly right now I brusher and love on her and feed her treats. I would love any advice you might have for me. She is a trail mule and she can pack. I just want to ride her...I have learned that you can pickup her front feet but not her back feet...well atleast I can't lol...

When you talk about respect, could you explain what this means? I'm new to horses, but am partial to the characteristics of mules, which is why I'm at this video. How does one teach a mule respect, yet not get the stink eye from the mule? Some people say that mules don't ever forget. Could you make a video to this? What does teaching respect look like and what is ok to be gentle look like? Thanks!!
