Ty, the "steampunk" sound you're referring to is actually "industrial"! They definitely incorporated industrial elements into their music. Glad you enjoyed the song 🙂

Definitely need to introduce Ty to the magic of Dave Gahan & Martin Gore's voices harmonizing and/or playing off each other: "Stripped", "Shake the Disease" & "Never Let Me Down Again" ... or Martin on his own with "Home", "Somebody" or "Question of Lust".

Yes your right, next time we film I gotta introduce Ty to some old school DM. Great suggestion!

This album mix of Strangelove is the first track I've played in EVERY piece of audio equipment I've ever bought since the song was released. I want to hear that first bass hit reverb in every car and every room.
@condemned19822 жыл бұрын
Wow, going Strangelove '88 (the re-release) rather than the 1987 single version! This one is definitely more dark, moody, and mysterious... the 87 version is less subtle but perhaps more instant... straight-out pop attack mode! Would be interesting for your new listener there to hear both versions, they both have their merits.

Dave is great but don't forget Martin Gore's angelic voice and the great songs that he wrote. You should react to the live version of "Somebody" where his vocals and beautiful and deeply personal lyrics style is on display. It also features Alan Wilder on keyboards.
@reactionextraction2 жыл бұрын
Thx for the comments. Martin does have an amazing voice. I first heard the live version of “somebody” on an import cassette (Ha) from a friend back in 1985. I did forget to mention Alan in the video, but we all love him for sure!

Love the raction, too. Thank you! You know what? My son is 14 now and he has already seen DM playing live twice (I saw them around 20 times, I guess.). He had never had the choice not to grow up without DM somehow. 🤪 That's why we haven't this first time hearing opportunity anymore... And yes, Dave is such a great, charismatic frontman! So please go on together with this journey. It is just so hard to say what to recommend - tons of good stuff. 😄

I'm glad he's liking the DM so much. I *do* get kick out of every time a parent/older-family shows their kid/younger one of their songs like Strangelove and then feels awkward in explaining it even lightly. It's like, "well, you put it on.... you realize you're gonna have to explain that ________________ song, _______________song, _______________song, (and so on when written by Martin) are about sex and/or some aspect of BDSM". It's like when folks share "Closer" by NIN but don't feel comfortable discussing sex afterwards lol.

Been a DM fan since they started...yes that old. This is one of my faves. Try has a good ear. Dave's voice is a deep baritone that has been intrinsically a part of their sound since the start. It's gotten deeper over the years. Some of his best vocals are on the Songs of Faith and Devotion album. The steampunk vibe was the industrial sound sampling that they pioneered and embraced in their earlier work. It's best exemplified on the early track People are People, where they actually used metal pipes in performances and in their video.
