1:01:29 Storms such as the one depicted in the beginning of the Martian don't happen on Mars, because its atmosphere is so whispy. Andy Weir called it one of the biggest concessions he made regarding realism. Storms in general do happen, which sometimes encompass half the planet in a dusty haze, but there would be no noticeable force blowing on any human. Such storms are estimated to occur once every three Martian years.

While it was less well known when John Ford started shooting there, Monument Valley was no secret. Ford certainly put it on the map, but thankfully its status as a sacred area of the Navajo Nation has preserved it largely intact, with limited access, to this day. Back in 1968, it showed up in two of my favourite films. Sergio Leone used it as is for the backdrop of "Once Upon A Time in the West". Kubrick used it for some of the colour-tinted landscapes David Bowman witnesses as he flies through the Stargate.

The greatest western ever made is My Name is Nobody (1973). Officially directed by Tonino Valerii with music by Ennio Morricone, it was developed from a story idea by Sergio Leone. He was also a producer on the movie and directed many scenes himself. The movie was partially filmed in Monument Valley and heavily references John Ford. The movie also heavily references Sam Peckinpah with slow-mo shootouts, etc. And, it throws a lot of shade at Peckinpah too. The main antagonists are an outlaw gang called The Wild Bunch & Peckinpah's name is on a grave marker in the movie... The story goes that Leone wanted to work with Peckinpah, but he refused and Leone didn't take it very well. Personally, I think the collaboration could have only improved Peckinpah...

The sandstorm scene in The Martian is one of the most unrealistic things about the film, and the author of the book admits it. The air pressure on Mars is too low to blow people and equipment around like that even in a strong storm, but the author needed it in order to drive the plot of stranding Watney alone on the planet.

Ooh a movie not mentioned is Crawl. (the alligator movie) The rain and flooding drives the entire crisis. It's a great scary predator movie. Highly recommend. Wizard of Oz doesn't count. Dorothy fell and bumped her head and wakes up in the house at the end. The tornado didn't actually happen. 😉 I've always avoided Groundhog Day because someone told me it was like the Star Trek TNG episode "Cause and Effect" and that repetition with variations got old fast for me. Also, I rewatched Die Hard before xmas for the first time in decades and I went-in extra critical, but it truly is a smart (for the 80s) well crafted and satisfying movie. I will no longer cringe that it makes the list every time. 😁

#1 on Amazon! Hell yes, well done, well deserved. 7:13 For me it was 1985 Silverado western movie (classic Danny Glover), 2006 Seraphim Falls had something special; the 2015 Bone Tomahawk was a nice surprise. 45:10 If the weather is a major obstacle at some point in the plot, shouldn't it be included? Sunshine, Sphere, Event Horizon, The Grey, Flight Of The Phoenix... 25:55 Wes is right about Murtry, in my opinion. Great episode.
