In the British version Louis has still left a full confession behind in his prison cell so does he 'get away with it?'

Seeing that he remembers gives him the chance to get to it before anyone else, I would suppose.

I first watched the film 60 years ago (or more) and, like everyone else in the UK I am sure, never had a doubt that once he was outside the closed prison door his "confession" would be found and justice would follow. I didn't need to have the point hung, drawn and quartered (so to speak)!
