I have both a 40 litre chest Engel and a large Techniice Signature ice box. I live in Victoria and to be honest, my ice box gets used 95% of the time for trips. Ice will last 4 days no problems. I also like being able to take the esky out and plonk it wherever I like in the camp site. The Engel gets used for longer trips only.

We've comfortably lived out of a 60L fridge on touring trips with 3 adults whilst camping off grid. National Luna fridge which has been running constantly for 5 years in the back of the cruiser - Not a single problem regardless of the terrain or extreme temperatures. In terms of keeping weight down and minimise power usage I strongly believe that a 60L capacity is sufficient. For the past year I have been considering an upright once I upgrade the camper trailer. Ty's points with regard to the benefits of an upright are concise, only down side is the fact that cold air escapes quicker out of an upright once the door is opened. Uprights weigh less than an equivalent chest fridge and the lack of a fridge slide also reduces weight further.

Thanks for the vid. Looking to set up a new canopy and will have a look at this option. Saves on space and weight as fridge slides are pretty heavy. GVM really needs to be considered when setting up a canopy. Cheers Mick

Exactly right mate, you don't need to have 10000L fridge capacity to enjoy a few weeks out bush. I use a 65L and that gets me through with a family of 4. You only need to put the amount of drinks you are gonna drink for the day in with your food then at night top it up from your supplies for the next day...most of the time I will run out of fuel and water and need to head back to a resupply point long before Ive emptied the fridge.

It's taken me 30+ years of using chest fridges (always Engels), to finally come to the realisation that upright fridges are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better, more practical and lighter. I now have a 55 litre Engel upright that weighs 23kg empty. It replaced a 60 litre Engel + CSM drop-down slide and cage that all weighed a total of 100kg. Even though I have a Chevy Silverado 3500 (SRW), weight is still an issue I have to keep an eye on.

Had the 80litre waeco in the back of shorty40 on the Canning stock route - I had all the cryovac meat.........took two of us to lift it in the back and luckily I had an external monitor in the cab - 2 hrs down the road after we left home I looked at the monitor with awww shit! I hadn’t plugged it in, that monitor paid for itself right there🤣🤣 We run a small upright 3 way in the camper which is exactly the same size as yours in the video. The 3 ways are the best hands down. It’ll run forever on gas and the amount of stuff we can fit in the little upright defies belief. As you said if it’s packed right you can fit a shitload in there and we’re a family of 4. Great video. I need a new fridge for the rig next year on our round Oz trip and I reckon we’ll definitely go the upright. Cheers bearded one🤘🤘🤘🤘 As for the smell in fridges - I accidentally left a piece of steak in our upright in the camper. About 6 weeks later my brother came down and I opened the camper to show him - my god what a smell man, horrific, took 6 weeks to get the smell out! Won’t do that again

Gidday Ty, I had the same ridge Ryder drawer fridge, died just before 2yr warranty expired, lucky, sent back to evakool factory, they couldnt fix it, SCA refunded me in full. SCA will no longer sell them, my local store had 5 returns, lots of other reports of them failing just before or after 2yr warranty can be seen online, that's why they are discontinued. Great fridge until then, did a central oz and top end trip when it was new didn't miss a beat. Now have 30lt kickass drawer fridge with 3 yr warranty, it's awesome.

Hey mate, ohh really ? I heard nothing but good things about them, oh well I’ve give her a run see how it goes. I just love the concept but it would be good if one of the other higher end fridge brands built the same style of fridge. At least you got your money back that’s a positive 😁🤙🏼
@Col.B14 жыл бұрын
Yep, I was disappointed, ran 24/7 til it died, the drawer concept is so good, engel, dometic and evakool do drawer fridges, but i am very happy with outcome and kudos to SCA for customer service, the cover for them is now down to $29 at SCA as run out stock, very good quality cover, I had one, enjoy your vids, keep them coming

I like the idea of being able to take a chest fridge out and using an infill panel to make my boot space flat and using an engel at home on 240, but realistically, the amount of times I can see myself doing that isn't worth the compromise from what I've heard from yourself and others say Appreciate the reply mate, good to see you still feel the same way about the upright after more than 2 years of use
@jamieh4x43 жыл бұрын
Good video, considering mitsalloy myself and was a bit dissapointed the larger bushman doesn't fit. Glad you reckon the 85L is plenty. Are you happy with the door opening that way? Or would you prefer the door hinge on the other side? I was going to swap the hinge, whats your thoughts?
@TyFenwick3 жыл бұрын
The new mits alloy canopys can take the larger fridge now mate if your referring to a canopy on US truck you’d need to ask about other utes. Yeah the doors sweet opening that way I’m not really fused on it. 😄👍🏼

Have you ever found the 80ltr upright fridge to be too small? I'm unsure if I go the bushman 80 or 130ltr upright in a 79. Currently I'm using a 32ltr engel and found it sufficient however it's a pain when camping as you can fit much food and drinks in it not to mention everything falls down when you remove something.
@TyFenwick4 жыл бұрын
Greg I was going to put a bigger upright in but couldn’t fit it. However the 85L has plenty of room for me, even a weekend away with the boys I only use the upright for all my stuff.
@TheSpeedsta4 жыл бұрын
I have an evacool elite 81 upright which has a separate freezer drawer in the bottom in my 79 series dual cab. It is plenty big enough. We (3 of us) did the cape with it last year including the old tele track camping everyday with no dramas. They don’t seem to be on the evacool website anymore, they maybe discontinued. Oh and nothing ever fell out of it, I think people saying that is over stated. My brother got rid of his kings 75 liter on a drop slide and put an upright in his patrol after he saw how good the uprights are. The only negative for some is that they are obviously fixed in the truck.
@maverick01854 жыл бұрын
Thanks fellas. I've been happy with the size of the 32ltr. I know I will never need a 130ltr but I thinking if I can fit it then aren't we all best to go bigger than what we actually require?

You’re saying a 100litre fridge is overkill for a week long trip ? Wft ? I have a 75 and me and the mrs fill the absolute fuck out of it just going away for a few days … a slab of beers has to go in before even getting started . Better to have too much capacity than not enough !
@bigred69274 жыл бұрын
I'm confused by the statement at 00:58 talking about buying fridges larger than 100L+ being overkill, but then you go on and talk about having 1x85L and 1x63L totaling 148L.
@TyFenwick4 жыл бұрын
I’m referring to people who only camp for a short amount of time buying over sized fridges. I use that capacity for larger trips or if I’m going west to carry extra supplies where most weekend campers don’t need that much capacity and simply wasting there money.
@bigred69274 жыл бұрын
@@TyFenwick Yeah I got that. I think it just entirely depends on individual scenarios. I run just an 80L, but we have to rotate things in as we consume stuff. Family of 4. 2-3 day trips. We also often store stuff for other people we go with because they don't own a fridge, and storing chicken in an esky full of water in 40C days doesn't end well. Our biggest issue is a lack of vac sealer. Once we have that, fridge space will be reduced dramatically. I hear ya though, too many massive fridges for short trips.
