Hey Threadhead! Welcome back, today I'm whipping up a Flashback Damselfly nymph. This is a great pattern to fish your favorite stillwater from April into November. I like to cast these over weed beds and close to shore reeds. Use a slow retrieve and move your rod tip side to side slightly. This helps impart some natural movement to the fly.
You can tie the fly in a range of colors, olive is my goto, but light yellows, olives, brown and dun colors all work well. If you want a lighter fly, use an eye made from monofilament. If you want a heavier fly, brass eyes will work well.
★★★ Flashback Damsel Nymph Fly Pattern Recipe ★★★
Hook: Firehole 718 #8-12
Thread: Olive 8/0 70d
Eyes: 3.2mm bead chain black
Tail: Olive marabou
Ribbing: Gold wire (BR)
Flashback: Pearl tinsel large
Body: Olive Antron dubbing (mixed)
Collar: Ringneck pheasant (olive)
Head: Olive Antron dubbing (mixed)

Nice damsel nymph Darren. I like that dyed rump, couldn't tell what it was looking at the still photo. Wow you're a "sparse noodle" away from 5K, awesome! No net or phone for NY, NH or ME Saturday, fiber optic problems I hear. I got a 2nd workout with the snow blower and shovels past couple days. rain then snow with a 1/4" of ice in between. How 'bout you? Cheers
@PiscatorFlies
@PiscatorFlies 5 жыл бұрын
Chimo, I was wondering where you were! Glad that you got the power back on. I got to use my blower again today. Heavy snow and I'm glad I didn't have to shovel it. Not too deep, but heavy enough to earn a nap. lol Sitting at 4999 right now, I'm sure it'll turn soon. ;) Cheers

Love Damsels :-) Fish this pattern a lot with great results - find it best to retrieve towards the shore (12 to 18 inches deep) as swimming damsels are heading in that direction to emerge. Since I am fumble-fingered I tie the eyes in place before cutting the bead chain free. Bead-chain seems to be the optimum weight for the right swimming action and depth - I also like the way it turns the hook point up to make the fly more weedless. My favorite June - July pattern! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you Hank. That's an interesting way to deal with the eyes. I bought a bunch of different colors off of Etsy a while back, mostly for my saltwater flies, but they are a good fit for the damsels as well. I was originally planning to do this with burnt mono eyes colored with solarez, but I kinda like this better. Cheers!

I love Damsels and Dragons, that sounds weird? So Damsels fished through or just above weed beds will take a lot of trout and this pattern is really great!! The glue is exactly what I use for that style of eye. I am relieved your videos are showing up on my feed!

My bead eyes are small, medium and large. Which would be correct
@PiscatorFlies
@PiscatorFlies 5 жыл бұрын
Tom, it'll depend on the scale, but the ones I used here are 3.2mm. IF you are tying #10 or smaller, I would go to a smaller bead. Size 8-10, 3.2mm is good. I would just use your judgement on it, start with a medium and if it doesn't look right, switch it up. I like to have eyes that bulge out a little on my damsel nymphs. Cheers
