That fly is just to nice to be tied onto the end of a line. It should be framed and put above the fireplace with a candle lighting under it.

Lovely lookin fly Davie. Coincidentally I have just recently tied up a version of my friend Davy Pottinger's Blue Jay fly which we use for salmon and sea trout. The body is silver lurex ribbed with silver wire. The front hackle is blood red and I tie it sometimes with jungle cock eyes. I like your technique using black hen underneath the blue jay feathers.

Beautiful tie Davie👍🏻 Im havin a go of it once I get my Eurasian feathers. I think that will fish well here in PNW of USA. Thanks

You always make tying in JC feathers look way too easy, I have a problem with them rolling when I tie them in. Like always a beautiful fly.

Hi Davie, brill tying as usual. Could you tell me which is the exact hook you use here - I find that starting with the exact materials helps me with my tying - I think it's probably a confidence thing. All the best and thanks for all your help and advice in the videos

Very pretty fly with the blue jay added. Be a shame to have a fish ruin it 😄. Thank you, Davie!

Would you say the use of a wire under the chenille will be overkill or will help when need to get to the bottom?

Hi MrPDG79, Adding weight to the fly will not do it any harm at all...ATB Davie..

Interesting factoid ... in the US blue jays, along with most other songbirds, are protected and we cannot use them for fly tying, even if we find a feather on the ground. I assume we can use them if bought from a UK shop though. Are your blue jays native or were they introduced from North America (Cyanocitta cristata)? In the US the starling and house sparrow, both introduced from the UK, are not protected.

Hi Ripig, Our Blue Jay is a member of the Crow family rather than a song bird and keepers have to keep them under control so this is why you can buy their feathers unlike the Blue Jay you have...I have attached a link to the Blue Jay we have in the UK for you to see.. All the very best Davie.. www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/trees-woods-and-wildlife/animals/birds/jay/
