Where do I find blue eared pheasant or white eared pheasant? I have checked several sources I usually get feathers from and they don’t have these.

Hi Curtis, The last two birds I bought were off Ebay under taxidermy birds as this can be the easiest and cheapest way to get these feathers other than that I have bought blue eared from Cookshill Tackle.. All the very best Davie..

Hi Emmet, I have attached a link to the scissors I'm using at the moment and I do like them very much though you have to be very carful with them as I have broken the points off them by dropping them on the laminate flooring in my tying room so I had to file them back to use them again..I'm glad you enjoyed the video.. Hi Davie, It's one of my favourite spring flies for Varzuga river on Kola peninsula, but I tie it in classical manner described by J. M. Kelson. Hope once I will try your Dee strip wing variation, it will be much simpler and cheaper to tie:D. Kori bustard feathers used in Kelson's pattern are very rare and extremely expensive.

Hola Davie, no es mejor atar el rib antes que colocar el hacle? ...
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Armando, You can rib the fly first and then wind the hackle up the body but this hackle needs to be protected so that it will last much longer when fished..I do this with a lot of these flies as you may see in my other videos of this style of fly... All the very best Davie

Davie, when would I use a UNI 6/0 thread instead of the UNI 8/0. Or UTC 70 against UTC 140????
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Mick, I mostly use 6/0 and UTC 140 when tying larger flies like pike and saltwater patterns though I have to be honest I use 8/0 on most of the flies I tye..UTC 70 thread lays flat so I prefer to use them for tying buzzers as you'll see me doing in the videos.. All the very best Davie

Thanks Davie, your Dee and Spey style flies are among my favorites! that was a big one! To be sure in my mind, the wings were from two different tail feathers, correct? And would the oval tinsel rib be ok applied from a material bobbin? I have a few nice wild turkey feathers, tail and wing, and a ton of old 2/0 Mustad discontinued salmon hooks. I really want to start tying this style of fly. Your videos have been the most helpful in tying this and any style of fly for that matter. I have two books by John Shewey that cover steelhead flies but only a small section on Dee & Spey style. That calls for a reverse tied wing like a scissors that I can't figure out. His book on Spey & Dee flies, that he went to Scotland to research is no longer in print. Like you said, and I agree, that movement of wings is a big factor of the success of fly, like the many shrimp and piglets I've watched you tye. Besides, I like the way you tie the wings as it's the easiest for me to do. Alot of your salmon flies have that same beautiful look! Thanks Davie, your skills and experience are Very Much appreciated!
@DavieMcPhail

Hi Joe, I did use the side feathers from the tail so that I could get a right and a left to for the wing, Yes you could use a bobbin holder to rib the fly as I have done this myself though I would recommend using a ceramic bobbin holder as it's much smoother and less likely to fray the tinsel..Many thanks again for all your kind words... All the very best Davie....

+Davie McPhail Many thanks Davie! I forgot to mention the body, fantastic color gradient! I've done that with yarn, I think it's called ombre, the colors transition from a light shade to dark. Really cool effect. Thanks again!

I'm curious as to what this type of fly represents to the salmon...?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Ian, This fly has a lot of colour and movement so we hope that the fish will see it as food or out of aggression, shrimp and small fish are the main food source for salmon.. All the very best Davie

do you laquer the turkey or any wing feathers?
@DavieMcPhail

Hi Frank, No I don't do this at all as it would stiffen the wings so the fly wouldn't swim as well.. All the very best Davie...

Substitute a dyed green guinea hen feather for the collar hackle and that'd make a great perch imitation for fresh waters here in Ontario.

Hi Davie, beautiful tie as usual. Really enjoy your videos and learn something new each time and I often rewatch them for inspiration or to try to emulate your patterns. I have recently got into fly fishing for mullet and have had some success. They put up an incredible battle even on the eight weight I'm forced to use to deal with the wind here on the South east coast of Ireland. I was wondering if you had any patterns for mullet and if you might share one or two. Thanks so much for your expertise and generosity in sharing. Always look forward to your videos even when they are flies I will never tie.
