I have to say, this one is tied more difficult than it needs to be. It's not necessary to whip finish prior to wrapping the hackle, just work the thread one wrap back to the post, wrap the hackle, tie off hackle, trim parachute post material, and whip finish. No need to remove the fly from the vise either. In any case, interesting fly.

Hi Jon, Thanks. I understand what you mean, but with this parachute hackling method you don't have all the hackle fibres trapped and tied down behind the hook eye, which I feel interfere with the thorax and make for a messier finish. Try one this way and compare it with one tied traditionally, and you'll see the difference.

@@Thefeatherbender Barry, I agree that tying the hackle in at the hook eye is a mess. Below is a video with the method I'm talking about. The only difference is that with synthetic yarn as the post (as opposed to calf tail used on the adams in the video below) it's much easier if you trim it to length prior to whip finishing. I use a drop of liquid super glue on the thread wraps once done in order to prevent the feathers from slipping out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hX29qYChZtaSb6s

@@soundslikeorange Thanks. Good point! Yes I know this technique and have used it myself for many years, using varnish to finish as you use super glue, the only difference is that you are not re-positioning the tying thread & hook in the vice to whip-finish. This is not easy if you have a thorax both sides of the post made of peacock herl or another material that is not the same as the abdomen material, then you have to go through it or over it when completed with the tying thread to get back to the post. This is mostly to please my own needs for aesthetics! Also after teaching fly tying for 30 + years getting students to whip-finish horizontally instead of vertically is a real challenge, especially if they have difficulties whip-finishing in the first place.

@@Thefeatherbender Nice points, especially if a material like peacock is used.
