@Gene Lonergan This is the third square lashing video I've seen in a row and by far the best. I would mention that if when wrapping the poles together initially, if you wrap one of the poles always to the outside of previous wraps and the other pole always to the inside of previous wraps, the frapping will compress the lashing cords with more even pressure on each cord because the cords won't be stacked under the frapping.

Thanks so much, I've been trying to figure out how to use some bamboo I have for fence and trellis. Your video was very well done and easy to follow. Looking forward to watching more, who knew knots could be fun?!?

Every time I see a Square Lashing, I'm always reminded of Mors Kochanski's Flip Flop Winch for moving heavy loads. If you aren't familiar, I highly recommend looking it up.

fromkentucky Hello fromkentucky. I am a big, big, Big fan of Mors Kochanski. Have you ever seen him navigate through the woods with just a long stick. Fantastic. He relates the story of loggers at night going to different camps in the dark for entertainment. Thanks again. Gene

This lashing seems to have changed a little since I was taught it nearly fifty years ago. The initial turns should be alternated in and out in order to lie in a rounded form and not form a line bisecting the angle. This means that the frapping turns make contact with all the initial turns and not just some of. Picky and pedantic, maybe, but the resulting lashing will be stronger. I'm posting this to help others not pick fault in the video which I think is informative. All the best.

Very useful video. What do you do when you have multiple vertical and multiple horizontal? Thanks

@Gene Lonergan Some people are visual learners and some learn better from written or auditory instructions. But knot tying depends almost entirely on visual learning. When teaching knot tying to a group, I tell students that learning to tie a knot is like learning a dance: if you only listen and try to do what I say, you'll get it wrong. The rope, in your hands, has to look like the rope in my hands. Your motions have to look like mine. That's the way to get it right.

Why didn't ya use the horizontal stick as the fulcrum to strengthen the force of the pivoting bar?

If you could post this video--upside down...then I could see your work from my point of view. That would allow me to follow your moves...instead of mentally needing to constantly flip the image.
