For years I first tied Tenny nymphs for Steelheading, one February fishing for trout in a PA stream having no luck, put on a black Tenny and the light switch was turned on. I saw Mr. Tenny at a show and told him my story. His reply, "They were first tied for trout." Mr. McPhail you are the best. BRAVO ZULU

I met Jim Teeny in Calgary one winter. Very nice guy and he was selling some other items. That Teeny Nymphing line and I know there was something else. Nice guy, nice nymph! Davie if you ever tie it again, lay down a thin coat of Super glue before you wrap the pheasant tail.

Well done Davie. Jim Teeny designed that fly here in PNW many years ago. Jim and his wife Donna are two of the most wonderful people you could meet also. Traditionally tied on black and black chrome Eagle Claw hooks, the black and ginger have fished well for me over the years. Good to see somebody revisit that pattern. Thanks

Thanks again Davie for a simple nymph that catches more fish than store customers! I like the KISS principle of fly tying as I can loose more flies in any days fishing than the number of fish that I hook and land. I would rather spend the time on the river, not at my bench. Now that Lockdown is downgraded we can look forward to some river time. I hope!

In all my life, I never expected to see you tying a Jim Teeny nymph that is for sure. I have a few of his fly lines and they come with a CD. They are easy to tie and work however; they sure are ugly little devils in the looks department. Some well-known fly anglers from America tied flies on the stream. Some used just their fingers and some used a clothes pin for a vise. They sure were no Ken Middlemist who tied flies for Hardy’s from 1959 to 1969 and didn’t use a vise only his hands. He called it dressing Salmon flies not tying them. I fish places where George Harvey and others once fished; most of his patterns were simple but functioned too. You might think about tying flies on site with just a pocket full of materials and hooks. It is a much different process than how most flies are tied now. I tried it and now understand the level of difficulty it adds. I used a small vise and gained great respect for anyone who Fly fished and tied flies while fishing. Truly this a better example of a Traditionalist fly angler than some believe they are but at a much lower level than anglers of the past.

Hello Davie, thanks for this tutorial. I have heard of this fly but never have seen it before. Such an easy fly to tie, but it sure looks like it will catch fish, and a perfect nymph pattern for Colorado's creeks. Please, don't you stress about making the flies you tie look perfect just because you're on video. Your flies always look great. I'm very glad I subscribed to your videos because I have learned very much from your techniques, though I'm not yet on your tying level, but I keep at it. Thanks again Davie.

Cool fly. Sometimes the easy, traditional flies work the best. Davie, I have never waxed my thread as I tied before. I’m tying some small streamers and decided to try it. I was amazed at how that causes the material to cinch down tightly and not move or spin around the hook. I learn something every video. Thanks!!

Thanks, Davie. Very basic for you, but none the less interesting. I haven't thought of this old fly for many years, but with those sturdy hooks (which I just happen to have in size 6) I may try some brightly colored ones for the upcoming sockeye salmon run on the Kenai. Somewhat shrimpy and simple; they should be great for these fish.

He also tied them in two colors typically a duller section by the bend end and a brighter color at the eye end of the hook. I guess he was thinking the bright head would act almost like the Czech nymph's hot spot. He also usually fished these on really heavy sinking lines.

You could easily add a wing case ore a scud back like material and really play with the pattern. I like patterns I can build onto. Very cool little pattern.

Neat little fly! Have you tied any of the more unknown patterns from F.M. Halford's book? Despite being nearly 140 years old, some of them are actually quite effective, and could easily challenge modern patterns!

Hi Arctic Riverside Flyfishing, I have tyed many of the flies from Halfords book in someway as they are the patterns I started tying without even knowing I had just like many tyers over the years have done.. I have also tyed a few patterns directly from it as well as I am lucky enough now to own a first edition which is a lovely book to own and as well the original owner has added little comments throughout the book in pencil which I could remove but in my view adds a lot to it.. I would agree they do catch just as well as many of the modern patterns.. All the very best Davie

A question from a beginner: isnt the size 10 a bit too big? I dont know why, I was expected small hook for nymph.. Can someone explains me the choice of the size? Thanks for the content!

mathieu salasca It’s not too big where I live in the western US, but appropriate sizing for nymphs depends entirely on when and where you’re fishing. This fly could imitate a few different aquatic insects, but mayflies, caddisflies, and stoneflies can all be found in sizes larger than 10. I imagine this pattern could work well in smaller sizes as well, but I would be interested to hear Davie’s thoughts on this.

Jim Teeny tied these on sizes 2-8. It was designed to fish a lake here in Oregon and he would tie it in bigger sizes for steelhead and salmon. It does fish well in smaller sizes also. Hardest part of tying was to find PT fibers in long enough lengths for larger hooks.

Hi mathieu salasca, It can definitely be tyed far smaller and would suit many nymphs like you said, we do like a good size fly on the lochs and 10s and 12s and 14s can be very productive..I'm glad you enjoy the videos... All the very best Davie..

Thanks Davie! I hadn't thought of or seen this nymph in a long time. I guess it looks like a lot of different food to a lot of different fish. I think it's caught dozens of IGFA world record fish, but you wouldn't of thought that by it's looks. ;o) Simple, fairly easy and quick to tie, one common material if tied without a rib. Makes you fish the heck out of it. Why I've never tied or fished one is beyond me! You can bet I'll be tying and fishing them from now on... with turkey too! Hi Charles, No I haven't as these are really the first Teeny nymphs that I have tyed though I have seen a few patterns with tails on the internet before I tyed the one in the video..I'm glad you liked it.. All the very best Davie..
