Great fly davie, just tied my first feather wing version. I'll give this a go next on a small Bartleet single. Where can I get some dyed rea? And can you do a feather wing version film? All the best and keep em coming Dave

Hi Dave, Rhea is a good in-between a hair wing and married winged fly and I'm sure it would fish really well..I rarely get the chance now to tye classic style flies which I do really enjoy tying when I do and the Jock Scott is one of the best..I've attached a couple of links to Rhea which I hope helps you find some... Beautiful fly Davie!! QUESTION: When you tie in a collar or hackle sometimes you tie the feather in by the tip and other times you strip the fluff and tie in the butt. Please explain when it is preferable to tie in by the tip and when by the butt. Thank you! ATB, Hank
@tomkeene149 жыл бұрын
Not to preempt maestro, but usually you tie a cock hackle at the base and hen by the tip. But sometimes you have to change this because of the stem thickness, length of the fibre, where it is tied in on a fly (body hackle, shoulder etc.) or the profile you want. I know some who tie dry fly hackles in reverse because they like the wake...
@hankvana21499 жыл бұрын
+Tom Keene Thanks Tom! I will watch for that more closely! Cheers, Hank
@DavieMcPhail9 жыл бұрын
Hi Hank, As Tom said it's the norm to tye a hen in by the tip and the cock hackle in at the base, but as you may have seen in many of my videos especially when tying a cock hackle on the tip of the cock hackle can be much finer and as well the colour can be better so I do tye what I feel is right to suit the fly so always think out the box as you can make tying a lot easier especially to suit what we can buy as not all feathers are perfectly formed... All the very best Davie

would calf tail work good on a hair wing version
@tomkeene149 жыл бұрын
Can't see why not, it would not be as mobile I guess. But that may suit your own fishing conditions and material box!

Hi Outdoorsman 789, Calf tail would be a great hair to use on this pattern as I do like calf tail for certain flies...ATB Davie
