Nice fly, I used to tie a lot of vinyl ribbed flies in the nineties. The panfish really go for them. Thanks for the video.

Recent subscriber here. Been fly fishing over 50 years. Started with southeast US warm water. Been fortunate to fish some of the finest trout water in the west. I just want to say that I really like your style. Like the jacket, like the bowtie, like the delivery, like the set, and like the tying. Thanks for downing such a great job!

Good choice Matt. Definitely go with a yellow color, and 14,16 is perfect. I have some of these in my box, but I mostly nymph fish. About 95 percent of the time. It has always worked for me. Enjoyed watching. 👍

Good morning Matt. Tuesday morning ☕️time. Enjoyed todays video and I like the look of that d rib. Hope your fishing trip goes well for you. We had our club opener on Sunday and it went well. The water was cold as the ice had just left the area we fished the day before. It gets uncomfortable in a belly boat after a couple hours at that temp. I observed a few fish caught by others but I just washed some flies. Felt good just to get out. Take care and have a great week.

Yes indeed John! I've never been brave enough to take my belly boat out except in the summer... where if I fell in I wouldn't be in danger of hypothermia! Two more days and I'll be in a tent in the mountains. I'm so looking forward to this week off! The weather isn't looking too promising but oh well, I'll make the best of it. Have a great weekend my friend!

Nice fly Matt I really like the translucent body. Wish I was going with you to the Smokies. The last time I fished there was when I think I was 10 or 12 years old on Chilhowee Resrevoir, but it wasn't a good fishing lake. Keep the good stuff coming and good luck on your trip. Bring us back some fishing video.

This looks fantastic on the klinkhammer hook. I was surprised by the size, I've always fished 16s and 18s in the Shenandoah National Park. They always look tiny to me and would have thought they'd be the same size in the Smokies but I trust the locals on this one.

Same here! Ours are pretty small here in Maryland, but it's interesting that on the Gunpowder they're noticeably smaller than on the Savage, and these waters are maybe about two hours from each other.

Interesting mix of materials. I’ve never thought of vinyl rib as something that could be used on a dry fly or one that could be used in the surface film. It does give the fly a good look. I’ve only used it on nymphs or Chironomids & used dubbing or hackle stems for Yellow Sally bodies. Guess I need to give this a try. Good luck & be safe on the trip. Herringbone tweed? 👍
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies Жыл бұрын
Thanks Bob. And yes, it is a unique choice. I've seen it in a few semi-dry fly emerger patterns but I thought it would be interesting to try. And yes, herringbone for the jacket, but not a real tweed. Nice enough for government work though. :-)

Nice bug Matt! OK, from what I've read, the later the "hatch", the later in the day the egg laying is. I think you have the size dialed in. I forgot the nymphs "hatch" out of the water, but I would fish some #16 yellow stone nymphs if no kamakazi Sallys are about... m-m-m, suddenly I'm thirsty for those kamakazi shots back in the day Also, seems like it's a prolific bug buffet where you're going, but I'm sure you'll be prepared being the dry fly guy and consummate fisher that you are. As for me, I just figured out I should've fished a yellow Neversink Caddis when those trout kept hitting my yellow palsa type indicators Good luck, stay safe, and have fun buddy! 🪰

Haha! Great comment Joe. I am hearing that the hatches right now are late in the afternoon to early evening. Which is fine by me as I can streamer or nymph fish in the mornings. Or just generic attractor dries. But man, I am ready to get out and do some real fishing. My last two outings here in Maryland have been poopy. And the last one, it was a beautiful day so I couldn't even blame it on the weather! Of course, I've been watching the forecast for eastern TN and western NC and it's not looking great for next week. Six days in a tent, in the rain won't be optimal, but I'll make do. At least it's not supposed to be cold. I've got my videos for next week in the queue but I won't likely be here in the comments until I get back. So take care and have a great week!

Morning Matt. Yes, the stone flies are bigger out west. The smallest size is 14. The average size is 12 to 10. Would using a poly material help the wing? Seems like it would have less bulk for the hackle.

@@SavageFlies awesome! Reminds me of Mike Mercer’s naming convention. If you ever market the fly to Umpqua or MFC, they’ll probably require some hipster name to fill up fly shop bins. Henceforth, it shall be known as “Matt’s Yellow Sally - Klinkhammer style”!! Yep, rolls right off the tongue, haha! In the end, the fish don’t care. They’d probably name every effective fly ‘ouch that hurts’ or ‘nope not food’.
