Tying One of the Simplest and Best River Dry Flies | The F Fly

This pattern is a hugely popular dry fly around the world. It is a go to pattern for me when fish are challenging in slower water on rivers!
Materials:
Hook: Hanak 130BL size 18 or 16
Thread: Black 8/0
Body: Natural Grey Hares Ear
Wing: Natural CDC

Looks like a great fly. Could it be used for dry dropper? Maybe only a 2.3mm bead, or stack more CDC for more float?

Great explanation Tom. One question though: it looked like maybe you stacked the CDC feathers to oppose or face in to each other. Or do you stack them with the curve the same way?

Thanks, and I stack them so that both the feathers curve down towards the hook. But when you are using just the tip on small feathers it doesn’t make much of a difference. Cheers, Tom

Thats called a WD 40. Usually tied for baetis, PMD's, pseudo's, etc. in size's 16 - 22. Great early and late season fly. If you tie in a little pheasant tail, tail with few fibers of antron as a trailing schuck from the bend to about 1/3 toward the eye, then you have the emerger version. and thats twice as deadly as the adult.
