It's definitely a good book to have in your library, but not *real* handy for today's tying. And whoa, I just checked and the paperback is $45 on Amazon (amzn.to/4gSafl6 )! If you can pick up a used copy for $10-15 it's very much worth it.

Cool fly Matt. If you're feeling adventurous around the first of next month Schultz Outfitters in Ypsilanti, Michigan is have a meet and greet with a bunch of tires and small tying classes with a few of them. Keep the good stuff coming buddy

Upright wing flies are the most difficult to tie for me. Matt to let you know your channel is a great informative outlet for fly tiers, but for me it is also de-stressor. For a few moments, at least, I can forget about the stresses of everyday life. ❤️

Great pattern. I find attractor patterns work as well, or better, than imitation patterns for cutthroats around my area. I will definitely tie up some of these! Thanks as always for the tutorial!

Nice looking fly Matt! I love the Favorite Flies book because it was written so long ago and the plates are really beautiful. Always cool to tie a fly and feel that these old time tyers are looking over my shoulder.

Hey Matt, I’ve always tied wings first. It the way it was done when I started tying 50 years ago. However, as an earlier commenter said I also no longer do wings. I agree the trout doesn’t care but also there is no way the fly can land wrong. The fly will have the same silhouette no matter how it lands. Great fly and great channel. 😊👍

If you take a full wrap of your ribbing at the base before moving up the body, it will lay better. Especially with flat tinsels. Hope this helps.

Nice pattern Matt, one that I haven’t heard of before. Yes, the way you tied the wings in first I believe is the proper way to start the tie. Always nice seeing what you got going on. One other thing, tying a white underbody, as opposed to black, for the abdomen will keep your red floss brighter when wet. Cheers 🍻

I gotta try this one now. Need more dry fly hooks first, the only ones I have left are 18 and I can't see myself tying one that small 😂. Also, your comment of "any wet fly can be tied as a dry fly" had me imagining what an Alexandra would look like as a dry
@SavageFlies

Now THAT pattern would be tough to make into a dry. But hmmmm... it might be fun to experiment with. Red tail, silver body, brown dry fly hackle. That part of it would work. But how could we incorporate the peacock sword? Maybe just trude style? I don't know. That might be a weird looking fly! :-)

@SavageFlies trude style was the only thing that I was thinking. I would love to see someone try that Catskill style

Nice fly Matt. I know it’s an Abbey. But since you mentioned a bulge in the middle of the body. I’m naming mine the Jeffey. 😂 Thanks for sharing this my friend.

Good morning Matt. ☕️time on the desert. The temps here are much nicer even when it’s windy. Nice dry fly today. I like the looks of those Catskill style dry flies. Did you get out fishing this weekend? Take care Matt and have a great week. Congrats Steve!

Nice wings, Matt, & congratulations on 25K subscribers! I agree with tying the wings first. Often there is less material in the tail, making easier to trim the tail to match the end of the thicker wing material to create a smooth & even body silhouette. Should we bother adding wings to dry flies? Before I had to stop fishing, I was planning to experiment with fishing dry flies without wings to see if they worked as well as winged dries. I wonder if some of your viewer have done some experimenting by fishing wingless vs. winged dries on the same water & fish? Has anyone tried the comparison? Since I now donate my flies to folks who are learning to tie & flyfish, I wouldn’t feel right giving them wingless flies. Also, I do think dries like Catskill & Wulff styles really do require the wings included by their designers. A Royal Wulff without its calf tail or calf body wings would look wrong & just not be a Wulff.

I stopped typing in wings. Just hackle the fly Maybe a little extra hackle. No difference in the way they fish. I think the fish are looking up The wings are for the fishermen not the fish. Love your videos. 😊

Agreed . I rarely tie a wing these days . Wrap the hackle then done .
