The Belly Bumper Bunker is a new streamer series that Kelly has been working on using the new keel style hooks that he developed with Montana Fly Company. The hook he is tying on is very similar to the old Mustad 79666 that went out of production many years ago, but is a little different in two respects: First off, it has a little deeper gap than the original so you have some more room to play with. The second, and probably the most important, is that it features a vertical ring eye so that your flies always track the way you intended them to. This baitfish series is a blast to tie, and the sky is the limit on forage/color combinations.

Coming up on one year from my first fish on a fly. It was the belly bumper. Awesome fly. I've been hooked ever since. 40 some years fishing with spinning gear, and now completely hooked on streamers. Takes my old stick bait moves to a whole new level. So much more rewarding. Especially since I started tying. Thanks for all the videos. 🤘🏻

Awesome tie Kelly. Nice to see such a decent keel hook back on the market designed specifically for this type of pattern. No browns in my area, but got a couple species of bass that will tear that pattern up. Thanks for taking the time for this informative tutorial.

Henning Radasewski This is the kind of stuff i topwater fish cod, saithe and mackerel with, only difference is that there is a rubber cover for the front part to protect the lure a bit from the aggressive fish, but the rest is the same, even the hook. I bet it will work great!

Kelly, you have some of the best tutorials around. For a long time I've often said with all the hook designs coming out and all the brands why doesn't someone come out with a keel hook like Mustad and Eagle Claw use to make. THANK YOU! This hook and pattern are awesome. I like the touch of lavender, I've noticed that in a few bait fish, especially white perch. I like yellow in the mix too. Thanks again Kelly, merry Christmas to you and yours...

Nice design Kelly! Most of my predator fishing (pike, bass and walleye) is keyed to a perch forage base which relates to the weed beds and edges. Found that flies designed to ride hook-point up with the point "shielded" with some bucktail were the best solution to prevent constant fouling in the weeds. I still have some of those Mustad keel hooks in small sizes but have been using "plastic worm hooks" or bending streamer hooks to suit for years - glad that you are introducing a keel hook for streamers! Cheers, Hank

I watched this video several times and learned a couple of new techniques. Snook season is open and I tied three in light and dark. I like a bit of red on my salt water patterns. I used VMC 6319 BN keel type wide gap hooks in 2/0. They have a longer space to tie ahead of the eye. Anxious to get out next week among mangrove islands. Mike (USAF Retired) from Crystal River, FL

Nice. The old keel hooks were pretty cool. I've been tying similar patterns on the Decoy Dream Hook Worm 15 (down to sz. 8) and the OWNER Jungle Bass 3/0 - 7/0 EWG (keel) hooks. I've got a killer topwater rat/frog on the 3/0. Tight lines.

Lathan Glad you are enjoying the Videos. The best time of year to hit the Madison depends a lot on what you want to focus on. For streamers, May and June and then again in Late september through october. For dries it's hard to beat the first three weeks of July. Nymphing is good all year.

In the rivers of the world there are Brown Trout and then there are bait fish. Thats it. Except the southern end of the mississippi where you get sharks. Then its brown trout and sharks and bait fish. - Galloup. Or something...I just make up quotes to attribute to him =)

Kelly, thanks for the video. I’m particularly interested in the version that’s for surface presentation (for redfish). Is the orientation of the fly 90 degrees different on that fly? Can I buy one?

There is a heck of a lot about this fly, that resonates with how they made wet fly patterns for salmon back in the olden days. In the way, that those flies were so transparent also, and they always added that target point of the jungle cock eye feathers on either side of the fly. What the olden patterns had also were these incredibly large single iron hooks. Nowadays, in the salmon world, everything has to be made on a tube. So we've gone away from this way of making flies altogether. However, looking at the pattern here, you can see how the weight of the keel hook is a key part of the design.
@BrianOHanlon
@BrianOHanlon 5 жыл бұрын
If we'd tie that fly now as a salmon fly, it would end up having a small tube of some kind, with a load of material. And it would completely alter how the fly would behave. Bearing in mind too, there is that lead wire wrapping underneath the dressing of this hook too. And yet, Kelly described this pattern as a very light weight fly to cast with. Because it doesn't have the same amount of bulk of material on it (which I presume when that bulk get's wet, then the streamer fly takes on weight of that water that also needs to get cast), that other streamer fly patterns might have got. Which makes apparently, this leaded weighted fly, actually a lightweight pattern to cast, as streamer fly fishing goes.

Would it be possible to move the close up camera to the left side so your tying hand doesn't get in the way all the time? granted the lights would have to move to the left side of your bench as well so nothing is back lit.

I tied the pattern as presented. I had trouble getting it to sink. I again tied one with 20 wraps of .020 lead but substituted a medium chenille for the Brush. It changed the appearance very little but the lure sank easily once wet. The action appeared unchanged. I wasn't able to insert an image here but put one of my facebook page facebook.com/mike.dameron.984. I opened it for the public and will leave it for a week or so.

Thomas, You can always skip ahead to the tying portions or simply figure it out from the recipe if you are experienced enough to know what you're doing. A lot of people out there are also looking for little tying tips to help them progress as tyers and we try to cater to that. There are plenty of short videos out there that will make you less nauseated, but thanks for letting us know your thoughts - John
