Hi Davie, love your videos, I've learned a lot from them. You mention using a Kamazan B110 to tie the glo-brite glass buzzer. Which equivalent barbless hook could I use for this pattern? Would a FullingMill FM50 60 do? I appreciate I can debarb the Kamazan but I'm trying to only tie using barbless hooks.

Hi David, I have attached a couple of links to the Fulling Mill barbless hooks I would recommend instead of the B110, I'm glad you enjoy the videos and thank you for the kind words... As expected excellent Davie especially the method of not using a black thread for the background of the buzzer.I have viewed a few of your u tube presentations on spiders as well and another excellent presentation, question please if I may would you use the spider this time of year on any still waters as the season down here N Wales is about to start,many thanks in advance

Hi Stuart, I'm glad you like the fly, an easy one to tye and does fish really well throughout the season..Yes you can fish spider patterns and they will take fish really well, I have fished them myself especially when the fish are close to the surface... All the very best Davie..

Hi David Only been tying for about six months, really enjoying I constantly watch and enjoy your videos, what are fantastic. As I am now certain I want to continue with tying my intentions are to purchase a vice Could you let me know the model that you use Thanks again for your wonderful videos Regards Bill

Hi bill dixon, Unfortunately the law vice which you see in the video is no longer being made. I now use in all my new videos a Regal which is one of many good vices worth looking at, here is a list of others you may like to view and you will find them if you do a search on youtube and google...Regal, Jvice, Norvice, Dyna-King, Apex, HMH, Snowbee Waldron, Ronzetti, and Griffin as some of the best... I'm very happy to hear that you enjoy the videos and the flies that I tye and that they have encouraged you to go further with your fly tying... All the very best Davie

Just curious have you used any other UV products? Do you have any problems with it yellowing over time or going cloudy? Tied some of these in great and red they are awesome going to go out and use them soon. Keep the videos and instructions coming to us amateurs.

there are 2 types of bug bond Kendo, the bug bond UV resin and the bug bond lite UV resin. the lite version has less viscosity than the regular Bug Bond. thats what I was asking Davie.

Hi Davie, I got into fly tying a few years ago but due to kids etc have had a few years off now and trying to get back into it. when using this floss I keep having problems with it unravelling even after I am whip finishing can this be down to the quality of the floss or can you give me any tips to solve this? ps your videos are great and very informative
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Craig Scott, What I do is to run the wax through the floss first which will hold it really well and will also give you better grip..Just in case you don't have wax I have attached a link to the one I use... www.veniard.com/product3317/section9/ All the very best Davie

Thanks for ALL your instructional videos, Mr. McPhail, in clouding this one! I've a question concerning buzzer patterns. I've noted that you tie some patterns with the breathing gills and some without. Am I to presume that those without (such as this one) are larvae imitations? Thanks for any clarification, Sir. Your videos have made me a better tier.
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Charles Loftis, You are right, what you are saying that the midge larva will not have the gills and this pattern would certainly give this impression. But many of the pupa I do tye are without the gills/breathers as many don't like them on their flies though I would have a mix of both as sometimes the fish do like to see them especially on the bigger pupa...I'm glad you enjoy the videos and that they have helped you tye better flies... All the very best Davie

Hi Davie, please can you send me how kind of resin (UV gel) you're using? Because I bought UV lamp and use classic UV gel for nails and apply UV light two minutes, but it doesn't work good. I think that the UV lamp that include 12 UV leds is sufficient and mistake is in kind of resin. Thanks.

Just out of interest, does it have to be UV resin or can you just use varnish. William Crawford
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 8 жыл бұрын
Hi William Crawford, Yes you can use varnish if you wish as this is the original way to tye this style of fly, or what I would do is coat it with superglue first then finish it off with a couple of coats of varnish... All the very best Davie

What kind of resin do you use and what do you use to dry it with? Thanks Mark from Ohio
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark Cooper, Most of these UV resins are very much the same and the one which I hear mostly about in America is the Loon version, I have attached a link to their products... I coat the UV Resin with a fine coat of varnish which will take away any tackiness left after setting the UV Resin.. All the very best Davie www.loonoutdoors.com/products.html#fly-tying

I actually noticed that all midge patterns you have shown are quite large (10-14 size range). But what I have seen/read in literature and on forums people tie midge patterns in sizes 18 and smaller. I know that not all midge larvae are that small but I still would like to ask if you tie midge patterns that small and if you had success in fishing them?Thanks
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 8 жыл бұрын
I do tye small midge patterns though the most popular sizes fished are from 14s to 10s as the midge that hatch on the lochs and lakes of the UK are in the larger sizes...The ones that hatch on the rivers though can be a lot smaller and more like the size you mentioned..I used to work as a fishery manager so I was always on the water and fishing small midge patterns with great success especially with fish that were hard to catch... Hi Sean, I used Bug-Bond lite which is probably much like the resin you are using, it will work ok although I would always give these flies a coat of varnish which would make them much harder.. All the very best Davie
