Thanks Davie! Simple, traditional and deadly pattern. For panfish I add a gold bead for a bit of flash and some weight as the fish are holding in 12-14 feet of water at this time of year. Green and black bodied versions (silver bead) also work well. ATB! Hank

Hi Davie, Thanks for another great pattern. Two questions: first, how important is the silk vs regular tying thread? I don't have silk yet. Second, how do you fish this. Under a strike indicator, retrieve, or even trolled? Thanks! Eric

I noticed a lot of the comments are asking about materials and what not, so here is a link from a reputable source that I use very frequently. The link goes straight to the partridge as that was the comment that got me thinking, but they have hoards of stuff for fly tying, lead molds, spinners, and building rods. Hi Davie, Great vid, for some reason I am really drawn to this simple classic pattern and will tie some for the coming season, along with some of the other traditional wets. I'm just wondering how important is it to store wet flies correctly? I received a nice fly box as a gift and the flies are secured in place using metal clips, meaning that they lay flat on their sides. Would this ruin the soft hackle of flies such as the partridge and orange and make them too flat? If so, what sort of flies would you recommend storing in a box that uses clips to secure? Thanks a lot and keep up the videos! More videos of you out fishing this year would be great to see too!
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, The flies would be ok once you start fishing them but if you feel your flies are being damaged then use a box like the one I have attached a link to as these allow the flies to sit up as you will see on the website... All the very best Davie... tackyflyfishing.com

I used Pearsalls Gossamer Silk in Orange to tie it. Your video and some others mention the use of wax on the thread. What is the reason for that? I noticed that when I do, the thread changes the color of the thread ( makes it darker ). Thanks.
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 3 жыл бұрын
Hi schmookie, I have a few spools of the Yli Silk thread which I really like and a great sub for Pearsalls silk..If you want to keep the silk from changing colour you need to use a clean place of wax and the one I use is Veniards Prepared Fly Tyers Wax and waxing the thread helps strengthen and give you more grip with less turns, it will also darken your thread as some patterns want this..I have attached a link to the Yli Silk for you to see.. Why do you stress waxing the thread? Is it for waterproofing or a better grip on the hook and hackle?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, It is important to wax silk thread as it will strengthen and protect it. it will also add colour and also hold the hackle far better with less turns which you need to do as these threads are not as thin as the modern ones... All the very best Davie

Hi Hugo lovenitti, It is wax as you said, I use a Prepared Fly Tyers wax which comes from a wholesale company called Veniards..What I do is to break off a small piece and then work it between my fingers until it's soft and tacky then I stick it to the side of my finger which helps keep it soft and ready to be used when needed as you saw in the video...I'm glad you like the flies I tye.... Thompson's Ceramic Bobbins D&E. Each stainless steel bobbin tube has a machine fitted ceramic insert to provide the smoothest passage possible AT BOTH ENDS OF THE TUBE. Because of the slick surface inherant of ceramic, friction is eliminated at both ends, preventing snagging or thread breaks. Available in standard and mini sizes. Try them both! What a wonderful fly, Davie. I tie it this way mostly, but have some made with a small ball of a thorax... usually red fox squirrel or beaver... that holds the hackle out a little. I use them in the mountain streams where the water is quick and jumps around a lot. Mike

Hi Mike, I have to agree with you that winding these hackles through a tiny bit of dubbing helps hold the hackle fibres up and doesn't stop them working as i really like doing this myself. Hey Davie, I have found a stash of Pearsall's Stout. I got it at a good price in my estimation. Large spools, I don't have Pearsall's gossamer is the stout thicker? I got it because it is my intention to learn to tie classic Atlantic Salmon flies. I guess I will have to teach myself and keep getting great teaching and advise from watching your video's and others too of course. Blessings. Sean

Hi Sean, Stout floss is the heaviest of the Pearsall flosses then it's the Marabou floss which can easily be split to tye large or small flies...Pearsall's Gossamer is the tying thread used mostly in trout flies which I used in this video, they also do a Maples which is heavier and used mostly on larger flies..
