Tying the RiverKeeper Soft Hackle Cripple by John Kreft - RiverKeeper Flies

The RiverKeeper Soft Hackle Cripple is a dry fly which floats in the film. Fish it dead drift to imitate a crippled mayfly.

Hi from Calgary Alberta Canada, I too tried on a smaller hook #16 and I switched up the dubbing to Sanyo's laser dub in light olive to add a bit of sparkle and used an olive hen feather. (how on earth can you tye a hackle that small on a 18-20) remarkable.

Strong work. I always learn something new. I have been tying this fly for a long time thanks to you, and am a better fisher for it. The sz18-20 bwo is a real beaut. Would you fish that small one behind another, bigger dry as an indicator or can you see it well enough? Do you ever dress these slightly to keep them floating? I know those AJ hooks are fine wire though.

Here is what you'll find if you click the link above for the fly pattern sheet which includes much more informantion. "Traditional soft hackles are usually swung as a wet fly. I use it as a “dry fly/cripple” and try to fish it with a dead drift. Get the fly wet and apply Frogs Fanny on it so the fly sits in the film. It looks like a cripple at this point. When brushing on the Frogs Fanny, push the hackle back to get the hackle to stand up. Also apply Frogs Fanny to the body. If it sinks, put on more Frogs Fanny."
