Don't know what you think of this. I paint the head and a small area at the tail with white paint then varnish the whole lot. I make my buzzers more or less as you do but I don't bother with the breathers,

This is brilliant Davie, not sure why anybody wouldn't want the breathers on there - they look very realistic! I'm curious - if you don't mind of course - but what is your all time favourite buzzer pattern? I enjoy tying a wide range of flies, but there's something about a well finished buzzer that is very satisfying - they're almost like little jewels.. Thanks a lot Davie and keep up the fantastic videos!

Hi Stephen, I was a fishery manager for over 14 years and a pheasant tail nymph and the quilled buzzer caught me more fish then any fly in my box...I especially like pheasant tail fibre on the bodies of my flies as I have a lot of confidence with them as this is important as well...Thank you for the kind words... All the very best Davie..

Hello again Davie, I've just returned from a very frustrating but enjoyable day at Llyn Brenig, fishing nymphs and buzzers. I managed to hook into two fish where one knot failed and the other fish leaped clear of the surface and spat out the fly. There were fish rising occasionally all around but I had to work very hard all day for those two failed hook ups. This got me thinking back to this comment, I'm wondering what your go-to setup is for buzzer/nymph fishing on a reservior at this time of year? Hope you don't mind answering and non-tying related question! My setup was: a 9ft tapered leader || first 6" dropper || 5ft mono || second 6" dropper || 5ft mono || point fly so approx 18-19ft leader in total... in hindsight I'm thinking that I was probably fishing too deep all day? Hope you can help and thanks for the brilliant videos as always Steve

@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 9 жыл бұрын
Hirouryglen, You can get a nice effect if you use a thick varnish which has got heavy with use, if it's too thin you'll not get a ribbed effect...You would also have to do the body first and tye off so that the body could dry before you tye on the wing buds... All the very best Davie

David, Chris Williams from Boise, Idaho recommended I watch your video and now I can see why. He and Steve Fernandez are guys I admire watching tie and you are in the same league. I will look into Veniards for materials and it really helps if you list them at the beginning of videos. Do you fish this super midge in smaller sizes and colors for spring Creeks, 20-22-24 ? Thanks for your expertise.
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jack, You may struggle to tye them as small as the sizes you mentioned, I rarely tye these midge below a size 14 due to the sizes of the midge that hatch in our lochs...Chris and Steve are both amazing and very talented tyers so if I'm classed the same as them then I'm very happy to say the least...I'm glad you enjoy the videos and thank you for the kind words... My problem is not making quill; with bleach is pretty easy! But I find your peacock eyes of better quality than the ones I find. Yours look wider and with more distinct dark and light nuances along the quill. Mine are more brown everywhere. Are all peacock eyes the same?

Hi *****, I buy the largest eyes I can buy and they come from a wholesale company hat supply many shops here in the UK called Veniards so if you know a shop that stocks their materials then ask them to buy in the extra large eyes and you should get the same as the ones I use..
