This weeks jig is a squirrel tail jigs. These are easy jigs to tie and very good jigs to fish with. Take your time and tie them right so they will last and the fish will not pull them apart.

I love tying squirrel tail. It seems so much easier fir me than other hair. I did the same thing you did Sir. I used the silver flash chenille as you did on the first few I tied up 6 months ago. I tied up some heavy jigs, 1/2 oz,5/8 and 3/4 oz for Lake Erie walleye aye ago. I used the buck tail and I have to say I had time tying that stuff. So stiff and it wanted to spin really bad for me on the shank. Hard to keep it where I wanted. I tied some out of Craft fir and really liked it as well. The Craft fir is much easier to tie and it really has a more fluid action to it. Some swear by the buck-tail though. I have many colors in it. Just tough to tie I think or I need to watch one of your videos on the bucktail. Gif bless and thank you.

I see a lot of dead squirrels, but I'm not a hunter. I don't have knowledge to skin out the bone and dry the pelt of the tail in a proper way to withstand the putrid odor that most likely would naturally occur. So I guess I'll always be looking for catalog offerings of treated pelts.

Gene Sloan I buy almost all of my squirrel tail as well. I do have some hunters that gives me a few a year. There are many places that sell squirrel tails plus they carry many colors of dyed tails.

@@stumphunter100 I find most of my tails driving around. Just stop and cut the tail off. In my town we have Black Squirrels.

Go to my channel and watch Stump's videos for Beginners. The first video covers all the tools needed. I have four videos of the series and will add one a week.

I do like squirrel tail fur. Your video uses gray squirrel. I’m wondering if you tried Fox squirrel. Larger squirrel, reddish/brown color. If you tried the Fox I am wondering what you think about it as a tying material. The fur on a Fox is a little denser and longer.

Hey Ken, yes I do use some fox squirrel tails. Like you said it is stiffer but it at the same time has about the same movement as calf tail hair so it can be used in some of the smaller jigs/flies. I do use it in some of the large/larger flies like Lefly's Deceivers used for Salmon and Peacock bass.

one can use them in trout fishing ? if yes what jig size and weight ? how long it have to be ? thank you

Yes trout fishing can be very good using a 1/80, 1/64 and 1/32 oz jigs. I try to keep them close to one inch long. The tail needs to be long enough to get movement in the water.

Is there something I need to do to preserve squirrel tail if I get it from the wild?

DolphinSavage yes remove what bone you can then salt the inside. I nail my tails on a covered wall at my shop. Let dry around a week then place them into a ziplock bag and place inside the freezer for a few days to kill off any bugs that may be on them. After that they are good to use and to add in your tying room.
