This is probably the best tutorial out there for flares/bell bottoms. I made a pair of split color (black and orange) bells from this tutorial!! Now I'm back to modify it for a pair of shorts! Thank you so much for the great instructions/vid

Great tutorial - brought back memories from when my kids were little & I didn't have a work surface large enough to layout fabric and patterns. So just like you, I used the floor (which eventually made my lower back scream). I hope you're pain free and you get a nice big work table soon!

Double knit stretch fabric

@@TyKent i know this video is a bit old but I’m still hoping you see this😥 I’ve searched so many different word combinations for this fabric, striped Aztec stretch fabric double knit. Polyester, Lycra, Ive tried different materials and filters to specify it through searches on various textile websites. Ive found so many prints that have the exact pattern i need but the fabric is completely the wrong material. I really need help on what to search and to know what the composition material of this fabric should be. I doubt you’d remember this specific piece of information but would you happen to know what the product name of the fabric in the video is called. ❤️ thank you so much if you see this comment and decide to respond🙏🏽❤️

Hello, did you use a serger machine or a regular sewing machine? You use ball point needle and used zig zag? I’m new and would like to do this correct haha. Thanks! Looked super easy
@TyKent4 жыл бұрын
You can use a serger or zig zag stitch. Trace front and back of legging or trace front then adjust back crotch..The fabric should be extremely stretchy for this tutorial because you are using a legging to create the patterns. Always test your stitch settings on scrap fabric before sewing the pant.

Quick question... When cutting out the four pattern pieces needed - are they all exactly the same pieces? You don't need to cut around the pattern of the back of the jeans? If you get me!?
@TyKent6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I understand your question. For this particular tutorial, I am showing you an easy and simple way to create bell bottoms using a pair of leggings. So this is somewhat of an "informal" tutorial where I do not focus on a front and back pant pattern. The fabric to be used in this tutorial is very elastic and stretchy so unless you have a very large buttocks or gap of waist:hip ratio, then using the pattern for both the front and back will still be ok just be sure you understand this tutorial is not for woven/nonstretch or even stiff stretch fabrics. If you need to adjust the crotch to accommodate a bigger buttocks and hip, I would suggest creating a crotch line from the crotch curve to the outer seam, drop it down 1/4" - 1/2" and take it out 1/4" - 1/2". I hope you understood the response. Thanks for watching!

I'm really confused :( I got lost during the process of cutting the fabric and stitching. So you have 4 pieces in total? You cut two at a time? Also, do you have to turn the paper over to get the other side of the pants? I'm so confused.
@TyKent5 жыл бұрын
I place my fabric on fold before cutting out the pattern pieces. Yes, because I only had one pattern piece for this tutorial, I turned the pattern around to create the back pieces. If you are bigger in your butt and hip area, you can adjust the original pattern by dropping the crotch and deepening the curve. This is a very informal tutorial on how to create bell bottoms.
@chai-28665 жыл бұрын
@@TyKent Thank you so much!! Also, what sewing stitch pattern did you use? And what number did you have your sewing machine on? I think it's the number for how tight the stitches are? I'm trying to get back into sewing and there's a lot that I forgot lol.
@TyKent5 жыл бұрын
@@chai-2866 I used a serger but the zig zag stitch on a basic machine is my go to for sewing stretch fabrics. I like for my stitch to be on 2.5 (about medium width and length). I don't like the stitch to be too tight. It start to make the fabric look ruffled.

Ty Kent And how much fabric is needed for the adult pair? or how much would i need if i’m 5’4
@TyKent5 жыл бұрын
@@carsonwinters6699 Placing the pattern strategically on the fabric you shouldn't need no more than 2 -2.5 yards of fabric. Placing one bell of a cut next to the waist of the other cut will allow you to save fabric but the bell will not be as dramatic.

They are such a classic and still loved today. Classic fashion just recycles; it never truly ends. A lot of things worn today has already been worn. Fashion is about making clothing your own piece of art. Do you still wear them today or do you leave the trend to the youngins?

You don't need to add any elastic in the waist? The spandex holds them up?
@TyKent7 жыл бұрын
Cherie Klein My hip and waist measurements are close in range and I didn't want the elastic waistband look on mine so I didn't use any. I also chose a very stretchy fabric and used elastic thread. You can use elastic but depending on your fabric choice, you definitely don't need elastic. This technique is simply for the use of very stretchy spandex-"like" fabric. I would also add, you don't have to use elastic thread, you can just simply do a zig zag stitch using regular thread.
