Nice thing about South Africans is that we just sit back and laugh at people like you❤
@AXFN_3 ай бұрын
While I agree with this as a Brit who was already aware of South African Coloureds, I'm likely the minority. I genuinely feel that xenophobia can go both ways. Your tone here unintentionally feels like it's dismissing and belittling South Africans - which is the stereotype of Americans (that they think they're no.1, they know best, it's their way or the highway, and other countries, and their perspectives, are irrelevant nuisances to be dealt with). For that reason I do somewhat sympathise with the frustration towards the US that many non-Americans feel. And it is a resentment that most Americans can't quite understand because Americans grow up in a country that is THE global hegemonic power. Growing up within that can sometimes give Americans a certain complacency, or 'main character syndrome'. There was something about Americans browbeating Tyla over her identity that gave off vibes of American exceptionalism & cultural imperialism to me, _i.e. "We know best. And we control the money and entertainment infrastructure, so see the world the American way, Tyla...OR ELSE! Do as we say or we'll tank your career!"_ It's how the US government bullies other countries using it's political/economic/military might, and it's how its citizens often flippantly engage with perspectives from other nations, giving a Americans a bad name overall overseas. It's a America's world, and the rest of us are just living in it. 🤷🏾♂ I feel like black Americans forget this power dynamic when they're speaking to the diaspora because they're not used to being seen as the more "privileged" group, but you are privileged by virtue of being American. You're used to talking about 'White Privilege' but y'all aren't used to analysing your 'American privilege' and hyper visibility in entertainment compared to the rest of us. I don't think an American should play victim when it comes to xenophobia, the average Black American has more power and influence than the average African. While they may be deulusional, as you say, and whilst I hate oppression olympics, critiques Africans have of Americans in this system feel like 'punching up', while Americans being dismissive or belittling towards others in the diaspora, ALWAYS feels like 'punching down'. Keep that in mind.

I just read your comment and I agreed about many things you said. I felt you were trying to be as fair as possible. As a black American woman I just want to mention a few things to please consider. When I heard the song Water, I really liked it. I thought Tyla was different, beautiful and has her own style. I personally have never been a rap fan. So Tyla was a breath of fresh air for BA women. As a new artist BAW would be her major fan base. BAM may find her beautiful but they are not following her music. I personally feel Tylas promoters did a terrible job introducing her to the American audience. Let me give an example. Beyonce is iconic and stunning but I love Rihannas style and music. BAW embraced Rihanna BECAUSE Rihanna embraced us. I could clearly hear her lovely accent but had no idea what country she was from. Overtime Rihanna talked about Barbados and I thought it was great. I really did not know a lot about Barbados except it was a beautiful vacation spot. Did you hear BAW complaining about Rihanna being a proud Barbadian and loving her country?? I do not think so. During the BET awards Rihanna stood on the stage with her lovely black Barbadian mother and said " I am a proud BLACK woman ". She did not seperate herself. The difference was Barbados gracefully shared Rihanna with the world. And BAW already knew how much she loves her country. Personally Tyla is not on the same level as Rihanna by talent. Water was not Unbrella. Physically, Tyla is very pretty. Rihanna was tall and stunning. She also has a mixture, her father is biracial. That is where Rihanna beautiful eye color comes from, her father. Tyla came out immediately, " othering " herself. She could have said she was from South Africa ( the end). Instead she let BAW know she was NOT black but " colored ". Now, maybe that is for her to get all American fans. But that would happen anyway if she is talented. And BA culture entertainment means something in America, it always has. And no matter how colored she is. In the States, Tyla is going to be seen as a new black entertainer. Just like all the Latin groups. They are Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Brazilian, etc. But wp and bp see them as Latin music catagory. I had no problem with Tyla being South African or being colored. We were just explaining in America colored is a negative. Instead of her embracing our history her South African fans lit into BA. Suddenly we were jealous and haters. It was ridiculous. I understand SA being proud and we were not trying to change disrespect her. If I went to SA and the native people told me a tradition I would respect it. The next thing you know the back and forth gets ugly and personal. Poor Tyla was caught in the middle and did nothing wrong. The SA fans were making things tough for her. She just wants the world to see her talent. Maybe things will change and BAW will let it go. But I would advise SA to calm down insulting BAW. Having a popular entertainer from another country in NOT a big deal. Foreign actors and entertainers have been coming here for generations. If America like them, we support them. The end.

" the math ain't mathing " ofc it isn't. Since when is 60×8=300 and when did we start comparing countries to those regarded as continents? And for a nation who regards themselves so highly when it comes to everything, you'd expect them to be educated on a matter in which they end up getting so sensitive about. Also, one can't expect a country to indulge in and educate themselves about a country they deem as miniscule and irrelevant to theirs.
