MIDNIGHT
FAITH
PLEASE HAVE A LITTLE IN ME
HATE
I KNOW YOU HATE IT WHEN I STRAY
BUT I TRIED EVERYTHING, I DRANK THE WINE AND STAINED THE SHEETS
IM CLUMSY WHEN I SPEAK
CALL
YOU NEVER CALL ME ANYMORE
WERE PAST THE POINT OF SELF CONTROL
IM GIVING BACK TO YOU
THINGS I THOUGHT WERE TRUE
I KNOW ITS REALLY NOTHING NEW
GOD
WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU HIDING
MY HANDS ARE IN THE AIR AND IM EXCITED
IVE BEEN ON THE RUN
SO IM NOT COMING SUNDAY IT ALRIGHT
I’LL PROBABLY TALK TO YOU AT MIDNIGHT
GOD
I COULD NEVER BE LIKE YOU
I CANT CHANGE
I CANT CHANGE
AND I DONT WANT TO
IVE BEEN ON THE RUN
SO IM NOT COMING SUNDAY ITS ALRIGHT
I’LL PROBABLY TALK TO YOU AT MIDNIGHT
FEAR
THATS WHAT IT WAS JUST TO BE CLEAR
YOU WENT AND MADE EVERYTHING WEIRD
BUT THATS ANOTHER SONG
ANOTHER NIGHT
A SHOT OF RUM
I GUESS WHAT’S DONE IS DONE
RIGHT
I FAUGHT AND STUMBLE TOWARDS THE LIGHT
ILL MISS THE DAYS AND NIGHTS WE WRESTLED IN MY BEDROOM
MY KNEES WILL GIVE OUT SOON
I KNOW ITS REALLY NOTHING NEW
GOD
WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU HIDING
MY HANDS ARE IN THE AIR, ITS SO EXCITING
IVE BEEN ON THE RUN
SO IM NOT COMING SUNDAY IT ALRIGHT
I’LL PROBABLY TALK TO YOU AT MIDNIGHT
GOD
I COULD NEVER BE LIKE YOU
I CANT CHANGE
I CANT CHANGE
AND I DONT WANT TO
IVE BEEN ON THE RUN
SO IM NOT COMING SUNDAY ITS ALRIGHT
I’LL PROBABLY TALK TO YOU AT MIDNIGHT

He's portraying a reverse endowment. He's literally ripping the covenants off. Additionally, there's symbolism in that the bridegroom is supposed to come at midnight, and to get into the wedding feast you have to wear the correct garments. Tyler is rejecting his "ticket" both physically and spiritually.

Stripping off garments is such a powerful image of the spiritual crisis in this song. "I can never be like you" is a huge repudiation of Mormon doctrine. Such a simple but well done video.

Tyler says, because he doesn't want to. That is an honest lyric. Gotta hand it to Tyler for being honest and personal in his solo songs, even if I don't agree. As an active Mormon, I can't wait until Tyler gets past this part of his personally chosen path and starts making music we can ALL enjoy again. But if he doesn't, that is his right.

James, You seem to have missed the entire point of *why* he doesn't want to. It's not because he is being selfish or allowing himself to be weak, but because to do otherwise would be toxic, unethical, and untrue. His religion of birth, the path he was set upon, was in contradiction with his conscience, so he shed it despite it being a difficult and painful thing to do, in favor of an initially more painful but more honest and ultimately more fulfilling path. It is a choice which requires great personal strength. My hope is that we all would do the same. I don't really care too much for most of his other music, but this song really struck a chord with me.

Dear Tyler, thank you for making your current album "Excommunication." I love this song as it is so true and touches my heart. Like you, I ask God all the time the same questions as you do. I was excommunicated in my late teens from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) because I was openly gay and had a lover. I still recall the day a priesthood leader came to my door at my home and handed me a letter requesting my presence at the church court hearing. I never went because I didn't feel I needed to explain myself unto men as God already knew I was gay (homosexual); and moreover, the spirit of the Holy Ghost personally told me that God loves me no matter what my sexual orientation may be.

The garments coming off..... Wow. To then top it off with them touching the floor, and staying there. I remember that feeling of stripping them off for the last time and I remember the first time they hit the floor, not caring how disrespectful it is to allow it. Such a freeing feeling!!!!!!!! I will never go back, and would rather die than be forced to live that life ever again.

I've enjoyed this song since shortly after I left the church. Tonight I'm coming back after reading a friend's exmormon journey. I always want to share this with Mormon friends but I know they just wouldn't get it. I always imagine exact what they'd say, "you can be like God! You can change!". They just don't understand this feeling. Four years later I still remember the moment when I decided to reject the church, to reject my garments. It is so freeing to say enough is enough and this video captures it perfectly.

This song always makes me cry... It sounds a lot like my own dialogue with God, back when I became suicidal and ended up attempting to take my life in a corn field miles from campus... I thought that He hated me, or that if He didn't, I could make Him hate me. But He was with me every step of the way, and He saved my life. This song brings me to tears but they're good tears. The raw emotion in Tyler's voice and lyrics reaches into my soul. Anybody who's still reading... Thank you.

The line "I'll probably talk to you at midnight" is the most powerful line in this song to me. He's similtaneously rejecting his faith and admitting he can never excise it. He'll always come back at midnight because he can't really get rid of it.

I heard it as maybe the church will reject and cast out, but God in His true form, is always there. He made us. He obviously didn't make any mistakes. Stepping away from the Mormon church does not mean you are forsaking God...and God isn't going to forsake you. You are loved, you are perfect as you are, and it's ok.

I came here after watching the recent Mormon Stories interview with Paul Cardall. I left the church four years ago, but am now just at the point when I am ready to truly allow myself to feel the hard stuff in a real way. This song and the new one "I Know It Hurts" are helping me so much. First the pain, then the rising. Thank you for meeting us in the pain, but then also giving us hope for a new and brighter future.

IMO: I think what's beautiful about this song is he's not criticizing the Mormon Faith... he's expressing that he tried and it wasn't his to be a part of. Faith is strange, and I relate so much to this even though I'm Christian, not Mormon. We leave the faith but the belief in bigger things still remains. We don't hate those that believe in ways we don't. We just eventually accept we're not able to be a part the way others are... and that's okay. It's painful, it requires mourning, but its okay. I am grateful for this song, his ability to share his struggle... I feel less wrong knowing there are other outsiders who feel it, too.

I don’t know if you had to wear garments in your religion but that is the focus of this. He is taking off garments, to most people it looks an undershirt and underwear but they are sacred undergarments meant to be worn at all times and they technically aren’t even supposed to touch the floor. So I think that’s all you’d miss if you didn’t have that experience the rest really feels like it’s for anyone who feels they have been an outcast from a religion or questioned their belief. Tyler said he wrote this for anyone who had experienced a high demand religion so this one is for you too ❤️. I love it so much.

This is one of those songs that is so deep that it continues to grow and grow with meaning. Tyler, You are amazing. This song says it all to me. I walked away from it all myself. I took a leap of faith into my own pool. Swam in it. And I am still swimming in it. I am not drowning as I was told I would. When I came out to my family, Religion was the first thing that came out of my parents mouth. And then being shunned by all was quite the challenge. I never rebuilt a relationship with my family. I am glad that you have. Almost envious. Thank you for writing such a powerful song. I hope that more lives are touched by this.

This made me cry.... I know there is a God, I know without doubt that I've felt the liberty and peace that "Jesus" is all about. But church? Religion? No thank you. The Bible never says we need a bible, or anyone to tell us what to do. It tells us the spirit will teach us... it says the kingdom is within us. I don't know how it all works but I know it works-- When we can strip off all the manmade BS and live in truth. The Bible says God is love and "Jesus" is truth. So when I read it, I replace those words-- It makes a lot more sense that way to me. But without a church, without fellowship, it gets hard- I often feel like God isn't hearing me anymore. But I know the truth--- We are all just DNA reacting to environments! Love & truth doesn't blame me for my flaws or see me superior in my successes. That's the good news! That's what sets us free... something bigger is out there, listening and keeping us as safe as we need to be. Blah blah blah there's some sort of magic in the Bible words-- Today is maybe a good day for me to get back into meditating on them. Science even agrees that positive thinking heals & helps--- Even if that's all it is-- it's something powerful.

Late to the party, but I can't stop listening to this song and watched all the KZbin videos of it. Thank you, Tyler, for putting what I feel in my heart to music. It feels like it should be the exmormon anthem. 💞

I saw this last night at LoveLoud. This song more than any other resonated with me. It put a voice to many of my own thoughts. I'm not gay but I've felt the pain of a one way conversation with God. Beautiful.

I mean...just...thank you. I can't imagine all of the people who went through a spiritual crisis without something like this to give them release.

That is such a gorgeous song and video. My husband is an ex-mormon and the words resonate so much with him as well.

"I can’t change, I can’t change and I don’t want to." Such a powerful line... Coming to the understanding and knowledge that we can't change who we are, no matter how many people or institutions in our lives try to convince us otherwise. Making the decision to turn away from your entire upbringing and world view. And the final momentous conclusion that we don't want to change. We have the power to make that statement and follow through on our own wants, needs, and desires.
