I remember hearing about this music video from my parents when I was still Mormon about how "disrespectful" and I agreed. Now, 5 years later I've left the church and I think this is beautiful. I will never fully understand what pain and shame that members of the LGBTQ who grew up in the church have experienced, but I can only imagine how hard it must be. People have every right to "disrespect" a religion that disrespects their very identity and makes them feel alienated.

I love this song... I've listened to it dozens of times already. The drums are punchy, and those analogue synths are heavenly... Very good lyrics too. I left the church a couple years ago because I decided not to go on a mission and I was alienated, and I was discovering things about Mormon history that bothered me. Leaving is one of the best decisions I've ever made. I am happier than ever, which is kind of funny because Mormons will make you believe that your life is meaningless without the church. Leaving the church feels like leaving an abusive relationship.

This is my second time watching this video. The first time I was and all-in Mormon and was deeply offended. This time I'm newly Exmo and feel this anger. "You used to baptize me when I wasn't ready" has been a topic of conversation between my husband and me, especially since we have kids close to that arbitrary age of 8.
@abby.tucker
@abby.tucker 2 ай бұрын
right, the church could focus more on how baptism is an individual decision for each kid. it would be beneficial for parents to focus less on their kid getting baptized simply because they turned 8 years old. instead, they could focus more on "what the age of accountability" entails and help their kids to understand what their decision means.
@ST-vt4nu

When I was first introduced to mormonism it even seemed like a more progressive, more community oriented branch of christianity. Growing up in a catholic area where kids were baptized as babies having a choice at 8 sounded great for example. Family home evening sounded like a really good thing and the people seemed so happy. Now I know more about the reality of it I'm glad I never bought into it.

It is hypocritical and naive when members of the LDS Church criticize Tyler Glenn's artistic message, claiming that if he "leaves the Church" he should simply "leave it alone." Tyler grew up in the Church as a faithful member. He honorably served a mission. The culture is ingrained in his psyche. After finally gaining the strength to acknowledge his sexual orientation, he STILL attempted to stay faithful to the Church. But the Church's recent policy banning the children of gay parents from membership was the last straw. NOBODY who has lived Tyler's life can simply walk away from the Church and "leave it alone." He has every right to fearlessly express himself the way he is doing. Tyler has every right to use his artistic talents to express the mental and emotional anguish he experienced during the course of his self-discovery. BUT, for those of you who think the recent same-sex marriage policy is the sole reason prompting Tyler's exit from Mormonism, you are flat wrong. The policy prompted Tyler to dig deeper. He was finally able to trust his own judgment and face his doubts head on, rather than following that mindless mantra of "doubting your doubts" He was no longer afraid of his doubts. He sought truth motivated by courage rather than fear. Through his research, Tyler discovered that the LDS Church is not at all what it claims to be. Not even close. Watch Tyler's interview discussing the video. Watch his Mormon Stories interview. Look up the CES letter. Track down the sources. Discover the truth for yourself. The Mormon Church engages in the largest most expensive efforts of all churches to convince the world that its religion is the ONLY religion with the complete truth. The LDS Church creates numerous publications and art forms - videos, written materials, websites, advertising, music - as part of its propaganda efforts. The Church sends people all over the world in an attempt to "convert" others, and has been doing it for more than a century. Its members constantly post messages on Facebook and other social media promoting the Church. In contrast to more than 150 years of the LDS Church's attempt to persuade the world that all other religious viewpoints are wrong, this is Tyler's first attempt to express HIS new views opposing the Church through his art. If you disagree with Tyler or anyone who has left Mormonism, I challenge you to address the substance of their criticisms against the Church. Don't engage in name-calling (saying that he "looks miserable," "looks unhappy" is a pig, is Korihor, etc.). Don't tell Tyler he should shut up and walk away quietly. Telling Tyler he is wrong for expressing himself and that he should stay quiet is blatant hypocrisy when your church and its members spend billions of dollars attempting to convert the world to its narrow viewpoint. You have nothing to lose by facing the truth and any doubts head on by examining ALL of the available information. Either your faith will be strengthened, or you may learn some new things that take you in a new, more inspired direction. Good luck.

How dare people be offended by his response! They should all not only be ostracized for being offended, but also told that their opinion is evil. What a horrible church for doing anything they can to invite members to join! This video honestly gives me so much hope. I'm glad someone is finally saying something about the way us children raised in "the church" are made to feel like there is something fundamentally wrong with us. I'm still trying to get away from the grip of hate. It's terrifying to think I may never be able to escape. It's the mental damage that does the worst on us. I don't know if I'll ever be 100 % okay with myself when I was raised to think that every decision I make to make myself happy is disgusting and wrong.

@@spencermclaughlin9919 Hi Spencer, I know you mean well. Please consider that I used to write things like this online. I went on a mission and did my best because I believed the gospel was true and the church was true. When I was 21 and new at BYU-Idaho, I tried everything to change. I read every piece of literature, conference talk, book of scripture, etc, the church had. There was no peace, no understanding, no revelatory inspiration that stuck. What I found instead was pain, suffering, and ignorance of my experience as a gay church member. I sincerely wanted the church to be true. I had put so much time and tears into it. It would've been easier for the church to be true. Boyd K. Packer said in a talk in 2010 when talking about gay people, "Why would God do that to anyone?" (make them gay). And that's when it clicked for me that the apostles didn't speak with God, because if they did, he would have known why God made me gay. I had been praying and crying to God for years on my knees. But I couldn't believe in men that claimed to be prophets, seers, and revelators if they couldn't even see me or believe me. That was my experience. The link you shared once contained many stories of "gay mormons" who were staying strong in the faith. If you click it again now, you'll find very few of those stories still up because those gay mormons could not keep living without a loving companion in this life. Some still believe in the church, but they needed love. I know this because I know some of them personally. Love is a necessity of life. It's like water. You can't compare it to drinking alcohol or smoking. It's not a perversion or abuse. It's two people who consensually and undeniably love each other. I hope you read this and can understand a little better why some of us don't believe anymore, or why some of us distrust religion. Please understand most people are doing the best they can in life and they'll be ok, and it's incumbent upon you to love them how God made them. If God exists, all this is so much above you to worry about. So please don't worry for us or try to change us, just listen and love. Thank you Spencer, I hope you read this and I hope you have many good days ahead.

@@Tiny_Speck Hey Spruce, I hope you understand that I do understand your struggle. I cannot imagine the pain and struggle that you have gone through trying to reconcile your beliefs and your feelings for other children of our Heavenly Father. I will say that my heart is full of love for you! I would add that I do not remember much of the controversy of that talk but have read it multiple times as I try and learn the struggles of my gay friends and family. I do not believe that Elder Boyd K. Packer was trying to discourage or belittle your experience. I believe he was trying to explain that he does not know why certain trials fall on other people including same-sex attraction, abuse, and pornography. I can only close with my testimony that the Prophets do speak with God. God does have an eternal plan for you, even if many things may not pan out in this life. He loves you and this is the true church of God. I know it is true because he has truly lifted me up with his atonement. In several spots in my life, I was truly lost, discouraged, and confused. As I have grown up I struggled mightily with the trials and pains in my life and reconciling them with the commandments and dictates of God. As I now know God loves me and has never forsaken me. He has given me these trials to help me learn and grow. I honestly will not try and speak to your experience, but I will say that at one point you knew the church was true. You knew God loved you and tried to help you; you knew one day you would live with him again. You knew that the church was true and the apostles spoke with God. I am truly sorry to hear about your experience of leaving the church because I know how much the church has blessed me throughout my life. I hope you can see where I am coming from. I know that even though many times it can feel like the apostles of this church do not care about you I promise you they do and here your struggles. God hears your prayers and loves you. I only say these things because I can feel people hurting and I know that the antidote is God and he hears your prayers. I love you and am so grateful that you shared, I will read whatever you would like me to read to try and understand you. But I pray that you will do one thing for me. Offer a prayer to God right now today ask him if he knows you and your struggles and then read Ether 12:27. I hope this finds you well and I hope that I can learn to know and love you better. Thank you for reading this and may God bless you!

I've heard lots of stories like this and they make me really sad. I grew up Mormon as well and I still attend church. I've watched a few of my friends have the same thing happen to them, Someone told them that homosexuality was wrong before they came out. They left the church when people started acting like they needed help as if it's a condition. That's my biggest disagreement with the church, and even though I'm straight, I'm well aware that they were born that way and it wasn't something they chose or whatever some people say. Someone being not allowed to be happy because of the way they were born just breaks my heart and I'll probably leave at some point because of it. I'm so sorry that happened to you. So many comments from those of us that feel so similarly. The video resonates with me. I lost my brother 23 years ago when he took his own life trying to reconcile the life of a gay mormon. I am not LDS anymore. Currently I live on an island surrounded by acceptance fill with different cultures and languages. I have never been happier. Something so necessary to break the chains of a religion confined in my head. Good for you. Several years ago I went to a x-lds meeting in SLC when visiting. It was for people healing from their bad experiences growing up. I went to “help” a friend who was having a hard time (thinking I was fine). Then one of the speakers started talking about the temple, telling and speaking of all the things I had been taught “ you will be cut off at the throat" ... yes they used to do that kind symbolism (they stopped doing it years ago). I freaked out. I felt as though God was going strike me down. At that point I realized I was not ok. That this miss doctrine had such a hold on me, STILL. I made a point to tell all I knew whenever I could about the temple. I didn’t hold back. So when people ask me about the Mormon Temple they got a ear full ... including my religious name Lydia (wait wait wait... guess what, no lighting bolt.. I’m still here). My heart aches for the pain in families, for individuals secretly and so publicly disowned. I wonder if they make kids memorized the articles of faith still? Since hey sure aren’t practicing #2. Keep healing yourself Tyler... it is a process I’m still going through but the more I’ve seen the light the more realizing is that they are on the outside of society and pure love. To many feeling lonely and not wanted his song brings us together.

This song, beat, and video perfectly embodies the pain and anger felt after sacrificing so much of your time, money, and energy to an organization you believe in with all your heart and realizing its untrue and harmful to so many innocent people. Tyler and I both served full time missions, 2 years of nothing but selling these lies to innocent people. When you break through that level of brainwashing, this video, right here, is a perfect depiction of the emotions that follow. Congrats, Tyler, and thank you from millions like us.

The church strikes gays with one hand and embraces them with the other: "We love you! But your gay family can't be a part of our church. Our compassion for you is great, but you can never truly one of us."

you should get you facts straight dude. They don't do that. The church might not agree with homosexual practices but they will not hate you if you're gay or not, that's just ppl way of thinking. Know that if he gets excommunicated is because of how disrespectful he was towards the church not because he is gay.

+Alex Soutas did you read what i wrote...? i said that they are NOT agree with homosexual practices which means getting married with someone of the same gender. Are you seriously expecting them to be ok with gay marriage if they are not ok with having a partner of the same sex? Is like expecting a vegan to come to a bbq party, obviously he's not going to be ok with that.
@josephjohnson8212
@josephjohnson8212 8 жыл бұрын
+isa castellanos my facts are actually perfectly correct. Having a gay marriage is now considered apostasy. Apostates (who don't repent) are excommunicated. You're also perfectly correct. The church teaches us to love, not hate, homosexuals. So, again, "we love you, but you can't continue to be on the records of the church or enjoy the blessings the Gift of the Holy Ghost" It really sucks for gay couples who want to raise families in the church. That's what the guy in this video wanted to do.
@isacastellanos7493
@isacastellanos7493 8 жыл бұрын
+Joseph Johnson yeah but i think he shouldn't have gone this far. This is very disrespectful for them. If he does get excommunicated is because of this video not because he came out as gay. l feel like if you don't want to be there anymore then get out but being offensive is only going to create more hate.

Great song and video! Tyler, by virtue of being in Neon Trees, was part of the Mormon publicity scheme for so long for no reason other than being LDS. His music was used by an organisation that continues to this day to systemically discriminate against his own sexuality. That is why he had to go out big rather than quietly. So he could never be used by the same organisation that has deprived him of the self worth he deserves for so long. Good on you Tyler, awesome imagery in the video and the lyrics. Looking forward to the album!

You know, it took me two years to finally watch this music video, as a still active Mormon. Tyler Glenn performed this song at the Loveloud festival in Utah this year, and commented on the hurt he had felt at the time, but that he now felt whole. He tried to be in both worlds for a time, and found that it was tearing him apart. And so the pain he shares here makes perfect sense. Are some things Mormons hold sacred made 'desecrated' here? Yes, but that's not the point. This isn't an attack on the LDS church - this is one man sharing the pain that organized religion has caused him personally. And I can understand that. I'm grateful for organizations like the Loveloud foundation that are seeking to bridge the gap between Mormons/conservative Christians and our LGBTQIA+ fellow humans. Love is what's most important.

Hi. I'm very freshly ex-mormon, and I'm saying this to you from a deeply genuine place. I am very glad that you, individually, care for everyone. It is not true that the whole church does. It's not a "culture vs. doctrine" thing, and it's not a matter of "perfect gospel, imperfect people". There absolutely are LDS Doctrines that overtly and explicitly make groups of people inferior. You don't see it because you've been taught to use faith to make special exception for inconsistencies and give questionable statements/doctrines the benefit of the doubt. There are literally talks from members of the Quorum of the Twelve telling you to doubt your doubts and to not to take advice from anyone outside the church. Isn't that odd? Be honest, and look into the discomfort that you feel when someone says they're treated like trash by the church. Don't put it on the backburner and ignore it. Investigate. Read church history. Listen to the stories of people who say the church has caused them harm. There are very real people being hurt directly because of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. There are very real reasons why LDS people who lose their faith "leave the church but can't leave it alone". It is NOT because we can't find truth elsewhere. It is because we care about what happens to believing members. Faithful, believing members are lied to-you are lied to. The General Authorities of the church lie by omission to the members about church history, and about their own actions. You do not belong to the loving church you're told. Christ taught love. Joseph Smith did not. Brigham Young did not. The men who founded the religion you follow are not who the church tells you they are. Go learn truth. Please. If nothing else, just so you can be informed about the real facts of the religion you participate in. Learn about black people not being permitted inside the temple. Learn about Zina Huntington, Helen Mar Kimball, and Nancy Rigdon. Learn who John C. Bennet is. Learn about Fanny Alger and why Oliver Cowdry was excommunicated. Learn about polyandry. Learn about Brigham Young shutting down Relief Society, and banning women from praying in meetings. Learn about the black slaves that were given to the church as tithing. (The LDS Discussions series on Mormon Stories' youtube channel is a very good place to start. Their goal and purpose is to just present facts. Real facts.) You deserve to have informed consent when it comes to your religious beliefs. At the very, very, very least, you need to understand why there are many people who say the church treats them like trash. They have valid reasons. General Authorities intentionally withhold information from you. Believing, faithful members are given a highly curated narrative that leaves out important things you deserve to know. I sincerely wish you the best.

Thank you so much for this Tyler - so many feel forced to silence and you have put their words to music and shared it with the world. I am so sorry for the way our religion has treated you and I am so happy you've been able to transition out of it. Leaving the church was the best thing that has happened to me. I love the line "one man's trash is another man's treasure". It fits in so many ways. The gay men that are thrown out of the church like trash are clearly treasured by other men. On the other hand, even though many value the church as treasure, you're able to communicate that some people don't esteem the church so highly - it's all depends on your perspective. I'm glad I no longer feel morally obligated to align my values with those at the head of the church sanction. I can treasure who and what I find of value and worth, and I can and will throw the rest out with the garbage.
