A refreshingly honest perspective, with ego kept in check. You're a civilian who's first course of action should be to remove yourself from a threat situation whenever possible and call the professionals. The farther that "threat" is from you, the harder it's going to be to justify in court. And the point about moving targets is an important one - I don't care if you can regularly drop plates @ 25 yards, being accurate in a high-stress situation on a moving target, with a high likelihood of other innocent people close by, is a whole different ballgame. Don't delude yourself with range games.

Great advice from a Tier 1 Operator who has actually felt the stress of SAF coming at him and taking a life because of it. Unless you have felt that stress before, dont think that all your paper target training will suffice for real world encounters. Just saying! Thanks Tyler for your service and sacrifice.

Tyler, Excellent advice. As a LEO I questioned the 25yd qualification requirement. My range officer explained that if a bank robber was across the street when I rolled up, he would likely be 25+yds away. He was right. My carry qualification requirement is the same as an active PO in NJ. As a PO he told me that we do not retreat, we seek cover. Most PD involved shootings are within 7 yards. Civilian carry is about life protection. CQB at its core. Do what is required to meet the qualification requirements. Train like your life matters. Being awesome at 7 yards is critical...IMHO

I really enjoy your videos. Just simple plain sense. Have carried a weapon for over 40 years as a civilian and I think we can always learn from each other. Especially an operator. Charlie Mike.

I think everyone should also take into account that Tyler is former DELTA. Let that sink in for a moment when it comes to Close engagements.

Great points. I think the average joe should practice at distance (25y with pistol) at least some times, to practice the fundamentals. Not saying that you have to have distance to practice the fundamentals but it shows someone's mistakes more.

There are a lot of "what if's" here.... I think it is reasonable to train from 0-25 yards.

Yes, it's likely the target will move if he's aware. And yes, if he's not aware, he MAY be less of a threat, thus suggesting retreat first. But anyone can come up with scenarios where the threat is such that 1) it needs to be dealt with, 2) you don't have a rifle and friends, and 3) closing the distance puts you at higher risk of being shot (almost by definition.) As far as the court issue is concerned, in comparison with an immediate threat which HAS to be dealt with, it's not a factor. You do what you have to and deal with the consequences later. Should you train PRIMARILY for 25 yard and greater shots with a handgun? Obviously not. You train for close range FIRST, THEN gradually extend the range to as much as you think is at all rational. Then you train with a rifle for anything longer that might be necessary. This is how Spec Ops people are trained - close range first, then slowly increase. Things are rarely either-or. Too much of gun advice is given as either-or.

He was US Army Ranger (Scrolled and Tabbed), Sniper and Shooting/Sniper Instrutor at Ranger Regiment. Then went to become Delta Force Operator ... I guess he knows a few things here and there about how Spec Ops people are trained ... !

If you can shoot well at a distance you will do better at close range.

The persons race will make difference in the media as well as in court. That’s reality too 😐
