i worked at a competitive swimming pool and the amount of chemicals that go into the pool in insane! You use a physical brush tyler, but there is actually a vacuum that you rub against the walls that will clean the pools, very useful tool if you continue this service.

Usually the lip popping off like that when you turn off the system means that there is high pressure in the filter (due to it being too dirty) but also the pool being higher than the filter also contributes to that issue (that's why that valve is there, right after the pump, to keep the water from spilling out the pump when you remove the lid). And 10 years on a sand filter? That sand is way over-due for a change. Also, balancing the pool chemicals to fix the water is half the work, the other half is to vacuum out the pool floor. If you don't have your own filter-on-wheels then you can your their system. Set it to "waste" because who knows what is on the bottom of that pool (leaves/branches, couple of field mice, and that missing horse they've been looking for).

Check the grass for golden filter sand when you go back, it looked like the sight glass had a lot of chunky material going through it. If that's the case, you might want to ask how long ago they got that filter tuned up. If it's more than 5 years ago, the sand needs to be replaced to properly filter. Always turn that pump off before moving the multi port handle! Love the video man, lmk if you want any tips!

@@Dodgeheat I've got to disagree with you on the cartridge. That's like going back in time when you're talking about pool advances. A sand filter is much more efficient at being worked on and maintaining. Instead of watching your suction go down worse and worse along with the filtration until you finally turn it all off and remove the filter. Then spend at least 20 minutes properly cleaning the filter. I'd rather turn a knob and clean the filter in 30 seconds, along with adjusting the water level. Cartridge is a closed system. 10 years though? Jesus, no wonder lol. Brushing before the backwash and rinse may have saved some time as well. 🤷‍♂️

@@trenton4712 backwashing doesn’t do a good job cleaning the filter tho, if they had a cartridge or even de filter all it would take is to clean them one time and add the chemicals you need and the pool would be back to blue in couple hours, but a sand filter can not turn a green pool like this to blue as quickly, it might take a week or even 2 just for the filter to actually filter everything. The biggest problem tho is the sand being old and the pool not having any cya in it. Also probably phosphates in the pool so there really isn’t any hope of it turning blue for a while.

Tyler you gotta be careful with the equipment. If you dont do it properly when you clean the filter and some times the pupm the pressure can propell the smaller peices of equipment and can seriously hurt or disable you. Maybe even kill.

I will be quite frank with you, most of the job is actually eyeballing it, even the most critical details, calculating by pool size would give you a precise amount but would take more work and could leave out some hidden factors that would make it require more, in engineering, they always calculate and double, some times triple the amount of materials/resources to hold all even in the most insane cases

Hey TT. For a sand filter like this you want to set the pump to "BACKWASH" which will fill the filter with water and get the debris floated to the top as it's dumping water out of the exit hose. Do that for a minute or two, then you shut it off and switch it to the "RINSE" setting to rinse out a lot of the debris you have just freed up. Ideally then you want to be able to vacuum the pool, so you set it to "WASTE" mode so all the junk you vacuum up bypasses the filter completely. Just take note that you will lose a considerable amount of water in the pool as you vacuum like this, but they also sell little rubber hoses you can attach to the pump waste pipe with a hose clamp so it's not dumping water out right next to you. You did a great job for your first service. edit: I just watched the majority of the video, and it seems like you knew a lot of this stuff already, I was just typing this because I have the exact same Hayward filter setup for my pool (mine looked exactly like yours at home did at the start of the season). The color of their pool is going to be completely transformed overnight, you may need to add more chlorine though to get all of the algae out.

honestly 10-year-old sand is pretty good but it's close to retirement. you shouldn't change sand every year because young sand in the filters is typically not as effective as older filter sand. Probably would be good to take half out and replace it with new sand to keep something effective long term. For the filter I usually recommend people if they are killing algae and have a sand filter, I would tell them to put it on recirculate to just focus on killing first then later on then after the pool is sanitized and the filter can be reintroduced to clean the pool out. ngl DE is worth it more imo over sand filters for the ease of keeping the pool clear. Sand is so temperamental if you don't get an effective grain/age. You do go through more DE in the beginning of an opening but throughout the season it will stay clear if everything is balanced when it comes to alkalinity/PH and if you have the proper amount of conditioner to protect chlorine. Have enough reduces chlorine burn off from the sun but too much will lock out the effectives of chlorine. That is why you should never be fully dependent on tablets and monitor the level of cyanuric acid as it will only be depleted from a pool if you drain and replace the water (which is expensive so avoid that if possible). Keep in mind im talking to anyone with this, not specifically Tyler. Other than that, he is pretty much on the money.
