You’re right Tyler. Nobody would stop you from crossing the Minnesota Canadian border if no patrol was around. But you can see patrol around occasionally even in remote parts of the Minnesota/canadian border so it’s risky. There’s a large canoe area along the Minnesota Ontario border for a few hundred miles. The border cuts through lakes and rivers but the rule is when there’s no ice, generally your allowed to canoe anywhere on a border lake or river but if an American crosses to the Ontario side and lands then that is illegal and if caught you will get a fine. The Minnesota Ontario border is a beautiful part of North America by the way.

@darylcano33679 сағат бұрын
I have commented on this before. The residents of this town are well aware that they live in an inconvenient place, and they CHOOSE to live there. Either plow an ice road or put up with crossing the border. Essentially, although you live in Canada, you are an American citizen. Suck it up. Cross the border just like we do, or stock up and boat it in the summer. If it's American territory, get THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT to build an ice road or a bridge. Why should the Canadian Government be responsible for YOUR problem??? Especially now. Might get a LOT worse. Just sayin'........ I live in NW Ontario too, IN Canada. And you need to know that we are considered the butthole of Ontario, and money allotment is scarce to say the least. So if you are an American living essentially in Canada, then Minnesota needs to step up and provide those...what...150 American citizens with a maintained ice road to territorial Minnesotan land. If those people don't GET THAT, then it makes me VERY suspicious as to WHY.

There was a time (before 2001) when travel between Canada and the USA was much simpler. All you needed was a driver's licence, or birth certificate, but the USA ended all of that because some incorrectly claimed the terrorist came through Canada, so it became tough for people to freely travel back and forth. I used to think nothing of driving through the USA on my way down east until then.
@lcartercСағат бұрын
@normjones4204: I remember it a little looser than that. When I was a little kid, my grandfather would drive down from the Quebec Eastern Townships to visit family in Vermont. He would usually take me with him. It took hours to drive down and back, because he knew everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) in very nook and crany on the drive down. AND he knew all of the boarder guards and their families. There was no need for ID, as the boarder guards all knew the locals and knew when someone was a stranger. I ate a LOT of ice cream in Vermont.

@tomslastname55604 сағат бұрын
Because a ferry would be way too expensive for a small community like that, and probably redundant since a lot of people there probably have boats already anyway. And there already was a water taxi service there at one point but it's no longer running, if I remember correctly. Plus, a ferry couldn't run in the winter which would make it even less financially viable. And we don't need to look for reasons to destroy more pristine lakes with large ship traffic. The ice road probably is the most feasible and practical way to connect the town to the US short of redrawing the border through that area, which might end up being even more costly and complicated.

Interestingly the Robertson screw might have been a household item found in American households but Henry Ford wanted the rights to the invention instead of just the use of it. In the early 20th century, Henry Ford was very interested in the Robertson screw for use in the assembly lines of Ford automobiles. However, a business disagreement prevented widespread adoption of the Robertson screw in Ford's operations. Peter Robertson was unwilling to grant control or licensing rights to Ford, preferring to maintain sole control over his invention. Ford, who preferred dealing with patented products he could control fully, instead opted to use the Phillips screw, which became the standard in American manufacturing due to its easier licensing terms and growing popularity in the United States. I know this because my great grandparents used to work at Henry Ford's factory building Model T Fords. When my great grandfather died Henry Ford gave my great grandmother a job at the factory and had coal delivered to her house.

10:35 they couldn’t have, they didn’t know what the lake looked like. 11:55 that’s kind of not the whole story. back in 1783 when the Victoria Americans were negotiating with the British who controlled what would one day be Canada? They need a map and there was only one map that was available at the time. While the East Coast looks pretty good the Wester it goes the Sparser it gets. Under negotiation was the edge of what would one day be Minnesota and Manitoba. But unfortunately that area was hidden underneath an insect on the map so the Americans in the British were bordering blind. They guess that the border should start from the north western part of this lake and go in a horizontal line until it crossed the Mississippi…. Somewhere. But somewhere turned out to be nowhere as the mighty Mississippi stops short of that line which left the border until 35 years later when A 2nd round of negotiations came about and the British that would soon be Canadians, the French (I think) and Americans established the 49th parallel. They came to a compromise that the border should jump up to meet the north western most point of the lake and jump down to the 49th parallel. But when they actually got to the lake, they discovered that it was further north and less round than they previously believed. But the treaty still stands so the border had to jump up to meet that Northwestern most part of the lake and drop straight down to the 49th awkwardly cutting off a piece of Canada before heading west across the remainder of the continent. 11:26 not 90! Get outof here

I think there’s also a Canadian town on an island over in the east coast with no land access except to go through US.

I've made a few 'Phone-In" Custom's Boarder Check-ins here on the West Coast. We'd sail 24' boats over from Canada's Vancouver Island, BC to America's Friday Harbour Resort, WA for a day of drinking.

I live near the Northwest Angle. The only access is through Manitoba off of gravel road or across the lake. Border Security isn't manned by border security personnel; it's a check-in/out shack. Covid was really tough on Americans living in the Angle. During winter months the residents had an ice road made so they could leave the Angle to get supplies, groceries, medical care. etc. There are other small towns across Canada/US in similar situations that should have had special arrangements made during covid. The Angle should have been part of Canada but it's too last as residents there don't want it. They don't want relocate as they like living there.

Well then the American government is responsible for building and maintaining an ice road, NOT Canada. Right?? Suck it up buttercup.

Couldn’t Canada provide those 119 Americans with automatic (dual) citizenship?

Like Saint-Régis (Qc), you have to go through US border and back again to get there.

residence should stop whining. If they choose to live here, they are going to be inconvenienced! Its their choice. People that live in Alaska can not drive to the lower 48 without going through Canada. Hell, even Alaska's capital is only accessible plane or boat

12:32 "No one can stop you from tap-dancing your way into Canada" - Ironically, most people who cross the border illegally into Canada do so while tap-dancing.

a lot of more remote crossing points are unmanned on both sides

You misunderstand the term ice road. An ice road is over a frozen lake. There is no tundra involved, only frozen water.
@whatdafrog9 сағат бұрын
And that is WAY too far south to be tundra.

Living in the Niagara Region of Canada, it is very common here for someone to live in one country and work in the other. Also, cross border marriages are common. I have two Canadian Aunts who married men from the US and then moved there. We regularly crossed the border for family visits.

The lake is flanked by American territory on both the north and south sides, why not just build more infrastructure in the lake? I am assuming that an ice breaker and a ferry could solve all of these problems, right?

Minnesotans are pretty much Canadian anyway. They say "pop" instead of "soda" and they say "about" the same way.
