I think it would have worked slightly better if James his beliefs at the start were slightly different. In your rewrite James starts off being anti purge but family first. So he doesn't believe that poor and homeless people should be killed, however he will always put his families lives above that of a stranger. Then during the second half of act 2 he 'changes' by choosing to risk his life (and that of his family) to protect the homeless man. However, this change is not completely apposed to his original beliefs as he didn't want the homeless man to die at the start either. It's only when (he perceived that) his family was in danger that he was willing to give the homeless man up. So I would alter James his beliefs at the beginning to be the following. James thinks all poor people are violent murderers and because he doesn't want those poor people to hurt his family, he is ani-purge. He believes that the purge gives poor people the opportunity to kill "good people" like him and his family without consequence. He still cares deeply for the safety of his family, but, as apposed to your rewrite, doesn't care for the safety of (poor) strangers at all. Then his beliefs get challenged when he realizes the homeless man doesn't want to kill anyone, and is simply trying to survive. However he still is willing to give up the homeless man. But then James has the conversation. He tells the homeless man that all he has done was in an effort to avoid people killing him and his family. However, the homeless man points out that he would be killing him by giving him up to the psychos. This causes James to change his beliefs, and he chooses to try to protect the homeless person. This, in my opinion, leads to a more satisfying change. As James goes from not caring about the safety of poor people at all to risking is his own life for that of the homeless man. This also makes it far more satisfying when the homeless man saves the family, since at the start James believed that the homeless person would try to kill him and his family. Then, at the end when James allows the homeless man to live with them, it shows James has complete trust in the stranger and wants to help him. The rest of the story would basically go as outlined by Tyler. This also adds another layer of class commentary as the real murderers end up being, not the homeless person but the upper class neighbours and their children. Not to say of course that rich people are murderers but more so that the average poor person isn't one. And that crime is often caused by desperation from being in a bad socio-economic situation and not evil intent. This isn't really what the movie focusses on but it could be revealed that the reason for the law change was an effort to pit poor people against each other. But anyways, this video is amazing.

Yo I would fucking watch this movie again and again if it was written like this- brilliant work from the both of you. Only thing I'd add I think is that there should be a reason that James had those initial beliefs, some kind of backstory/ trauma, that could then in part be healed the end of these events.

The only change I would make to your new version is to have Henry emerge and save the family from the neighbors instead of the homeless man. In the original version the homeless man coming to the rescue was cathartic and drives the point of the story that innocent strangers are worthy. In the revised version, since the homeless guy already allied in act 2, it’s not as epic. Henry coming to the rescue shows that he gave up his motive and supports the new premise, to be anti-purge, and he gets redemption for letting the intruders in.

Really enjoyed that. I'm often sceptical about people changing movies into what they wanted instead but that was about making something BETTER as the purge is such a good idea that deserves a better movie than the one we got. Bravo you sexy fella! For a real challenge, try and fix Jurassic Park 3 as that had no structure or climax and was a real hot mess! Also, as ever, you're voice is like hot chocolate for the soul! Gorgeous! ❤️

Thank you for doing this video. I always thought that the purge had quite an interesting premise, but the movie and sequel never seem to deliver on this premise and fell flat. This rewrite is amazing and really cuts the heart of the philosophical conflict that the premise of the purge has.

i watched the purge movies for the first time over the last couple of months and just finished "the forever purge" last week. Since the first movie I was thinking that the concept has a lot of potential even some interesting political ideas that remain half baked. with each movie i was hoping that the next one will touch on those points but i was disappointed. a small dream of mine since then is to make an own version of a purge movie and "fix it". you can image how i felt when i saw this video title :)

18:04, this whole thing is pretty good but I do feel like it's a bit of a logical stretch to say the main family would not have recognized the first gang of purgers as there neighbours children if they had lived there so long. Maybe the kids just keep the masks on at all times or we get a line about how the main family just moved in and doesn't know the neighbours (and by extension) there kids that well. Over all a nitpick in a great rewrite

The purge is a good movie. Not every aspect of a movie has to serve a deeper purpose for the characters emotional development. The neighbors came out of nowhere, it was a great twist and it added to the thought experiment that the purge was SUPPOSED to be: what would you do? what would the ones closest to you do?

Love the editing/production value. Your rewrite has some compelling improvements to the script, as well (rendering it more cohesive), but the ending falls flat just the same imo. Mainly, your rewrite loses steam by eliminating James' arc. If he starts out Anti-Purge and concludes as Anti-Purge, then the harrowing experience of having his family/home threatened exists totally independent of his philosophical viewpoint. In other words, if the events that unfold do not exercise any gravity on James' philosophical viewpoint, then the stakes are only literal and surface-deep.
@TylerMowery
@TylerMowery 2 жыл бұрын
I think that’s a pretty strong criticism. What I was going for was creating a stronger justification for why he decides to save the man inside, initially believing that he should only save his family and not help this man. I think views on the purge as a whole weren’t as interesting because to me it’s not about the legitimacy of the purge as much as it is about saving or not saving the particular person’s life. So he does arc. Rather than being pragmatic and only looking out for his family, he becomes actively against the system he is inside by the end of the film and changes his view.
@fotismichael1877
@fotismichael1877 2 жыл бұрын
@@TylerMowery that's a fair distinction. Still, I feel the ending lacks catharsis bc James makes his decision to spare a life way earlier. Any case, like you say in the video, we could toy around with this structure for weeks. Well done, either way. I enjoy your videos.
@jcdf2
@jcdf2 2 жыл бұрын
An improvement but it's still not a very good story. Your new version of the story has created a new problem with the protagonist, making him intelligent and pragmatic enough to thrive in this world but also completely ignorant of his neighbours true nature along with that of their children.

The Purge was a 10 in terms of concept but only about a 6 in execution. But blumhouse makes movies for under $5 million so when they make $200 million they are extremely profitable and therefore sequels... But yeah they could be written better. I like Tylers redo much better.

thanks Tyler I believe this is the perfect movie, You misrepresented the point of view; it dealt with black lives matter, and those white friends weren't always there to help you. Therefore, just because a person is black doesn't mean that he is after your family, and just because a person is white doesn't mean that he isn't in it for your family if i have a slightly racism father in law I would very much make him watch the movie

Having the protagonist i.e. james to be alive is not interesting. It does give relief but does not create an emotion. However if james died, it will create emotional impact among the audience and eventually, it did to me. If you let die a character that the people admire or love, it creates an emotional impact, (For an example, if they hadn't killed ali in squid game, it would be nice to have ali throughout the series but it wouldn't have created the emotion as everyone admired and loved him) in the purge, people might've admired james as he takes every step to protect his family at all costs so letting james die in the story might've created an emotional impact among the audience
